Close, but Actually Rusty it's called wether not wither, and the actual act itself is called castration or neutering. Once they have been castrated, they are then referred to or called a wether goat. Thanks!

As a pet we had a billy goat. He was friends with our two large dog. The three of them ran free on 160 acres. We did not farm but had two horse and raised two Phillies. We had no knowledge of how to take care of Andy the goat but he lived a charmed life.

I just saw my very first introduction to your videos and LOVED it! Your easy-going style and every day language made it fun and informative at the same time. Thanks so much for teaching me about the goats and how to incorporate them into a homestead. (Up north we call a homestead a 'hobby farm'.) Clearly you love your life and are grateful for it. Your presentation was the best example of being contented just as God tells us we should be. Thanks for taking the time. I can't wait to see the rest of your videos! God Bless you, Jason!

When New York went into quarantine- we couldn’t get just about anything for 2-3 months at the stores - they’re really just starting to come back into full swing.
New goats are awesome- love that you have a playground for them all. Brings back memories of the “goat lady” who lived in the middle of nowhere on the side of a mountain. She was awesome.
    Gotta love that nugget!
    Stay safe!

Wow! I can't believe that our goat produces milk. I grew up rearing these dwarf goats for my grandpa. After nearly 50 years of my life, I never knew they could produce milk for human consumption until I watched this video. The dwarf goat is native to Igbo tribe of Eastern Nigeria. Now, I am going back to goat farming because I love milk. Thanks for the video.

I started with LaManchas and Nubians. Sedate and all business. I am so used to getting 4 to 6 quarts a day from them, with easy faucets for milking, that I could not get used to Nigerians who were jumping on my shed roof, and getting in the neighbor's yard, and they were hard for me to milk with their tiny faucets. But I can see how much fun they are . All goats are wonderful, but the little ones are great for pets.

Thank You so much for the kind words. I have been busy kidding some late kids. Warparty took a bit to get his act together. Plus this rain is really slowing me down getting grass cut and the garden harvested. Cucumbers up the yang if you need some... Tomatoes going crazy... Need to trim more of them. The American Breese Chickens went outside today and are doing great. Take Care and Love you All!
Tip's dehorn looks pretty decent from the videos and glad his Wether thing turned out well too. Hoping Deesse kids so I can send her to you for you all to try a milk goat. She went over height, but has easy to milk teats and milks real well. She has made her milk star and has a championship leg, but because she grew a bit to tall will never see another show ring and her milk records will not be accepted for the performance programs. But a real nice milk doe and her kids have done well, have to take care to breed her to a small buck.
Will let you know when she kids. Borrow goats are all good.

We love our two Nigerian Dwarfs too! We have two females that half sisters and about 18months old. One was bottle fed but not the other and it really does make a HUGE difference. When you do go to breed, do you plan to bring lil Boots to a male or have you thought about AI? The guy I bought 'em from had two mamas and one buck and he said if he could do it all over again he'd invest the $ he spent on the buck on taking a AI course and then just purchase new stock each breeding. I think I'm leaning that way myself.

What are the measurements of your pin? I am building one now. How much hay and gain do you have to feed? I know when they are in a smaller pin you have to feed this more... Thanks

Do you use diatomaceous earth to help with parasites? I wonder if it's useful for them like it is for chicken raising. Sprinkle all over the area they live and then put a bit in their food to thwart internal parasites? I have a move in rooster and a co-worker told me they are the gateway drug to animal owning so I'm watcing your goat videos because while I don't have hens yet (waiting on finishing my coop before buying girlfriends for Colonel Sanders XD), I might already be addicted to the whole "homestead" idea of life. ;) My apologies if I spam your channel. Im' a brand new subscriber so I may end up with lots of questions. I understand if you can't respond too because soooo many subs! Congrats! What part of the southeast are you in? I'm in eastern NC with barely half an acre. I may need to rethink my decisions. LOL!!

So a 3 sided shelter is sufficient for goats? I really want to get some but we have no barn yet so wondering how much shelter is needed? We are a little further up from y'all down in AL though! 😉 Were up in the hills of East TN! So we do get the occasional snow and 6 degree weather!

    • @CogHillFarm
      @CogHillFarm  7 лет назад +2

Definitely.....3 sided is fine here, & I would think it would be fine there as well. If it got really cold, & you got worried, you could always throw a tarp on the front, but I'm thinking they would be fine....those suckers are from mountain regions, & should adapt. Thanks ! -Jason

Love the breed and looks like your loving the lifestyle. My question is do you HAVE to milk the goats and what happens if you don't and just want them as pets?

Do you have troubles with predators? We live a rural mountainous area with mountain lions, coyotes, hawks. I would probably build a pen with fencing over the top as the mountain lions have been known to jump sheep, in a fenced pen, in the middle of the day.
My sis raises the larger goats but I’ve admired the small goats for some time. Thanks for the video!

None at all here really.....nothing that would jump the fence. I cannot imagine having mnt loins!!! 😳. Good luck guys!! And thank y’all !!-Jason

Feta cheese is great, and goat milk is good for children who are sensitive to cow milk. Goat meat has less fat content than lamb meat so it’s meat don’t have the strong smell if the animal is mature.

Nice video, been thinking of getting 2. One question though, what kind of fencing or how high of fencing should they have so they do not escape? Our neighbor has big dogs that are pretty aggressive and we have a busy street right in front of our property.
