Being hateful is just being fearful, egotistical and in a prison of one's own making. I'm glad this person found a way out of that upbringing and found truth within their own life instead of following the way of their ignorant family.
Bet the parents say they live by "Traditional Family Values" and say that "Family Comes First" but then the moment there child chooses to disagree with any of there views they immediately disown them...
This is deeply relatable to me. I wasn't raised by people as extreme as white nationalists. But I was raised by fundamentalists who taught me very homophobic things that I had to work for years to unlearn. And then I too came out as trans and bi. Finding yourself and finding peace so often means leaving behind all the things you once thought were intrinsical to you.
@charli8815. . .and the sad thing is, they plant seeds in your mind that you can't have a personal relationship with "God". . .as if "God" and "loving/relationship" is beholding to them only.
People hate college as they can feel like it scams them out of their money, but it can be a way out or an opportunity to challenge your upbringing. Seeing other perspectives of people that are where you are but got there differently.
Absolutely, I concur. University studies are not meant to be vocational training alone. It is meant to create well-rounded, critical thinking citizens of the world. It is the place wherein you get to hear the opinions and experiences of those different from what we grew up with, grow as an individual, and try to find your own path.
This is why the GOP propaganda machine is touring college campuses telling kids to drop out and now reaching out to middle schoolers and high schoolers telling them college is bad. They know many who are brought up in hateful households like this change their ideology after leaving home and turn their backs on the conservative right.
Exactly. Which is why Jehovah's Witnesses discourage their members from attending college. Except for the lawyers the J.W. Organization needs. A lot of Jehovah's Witnesses are window cleaners, or tradesmen. Which is useful for free labor for building excess Kingdom Halls, and having to 'unfortunately' sell them to make money from real estate to make the 9 current leaders ( The Governing Body), fat cats, while most Jehovah's Witnesses are poor.
I am so inspired that through their painful experiences, they are still trying to make the world a better place for black and trans people 💜 I can’t wait to read their book “A Klans Man’s Son: My Journey From White Nationalism to Antiracism”
The people referring to them as him/son/he are missing the whole point in their coming out as trans! They’re risking everything, so at least honor their new identity. Sheesh!
Indeed. Teach and encourage your children to be whomever they wish. Guide and protect them when they're not being accepted. That's what a real parent does 💯
I all ways tell my grand children to think for themselves, I also teach my grandchildren to respect people does not matter who it is and believe me I do expect them to treat everyone with respect! And I believe they can think for themselves they know right from wrong! You are one incredible person to have been raised in such a hateful household, you keep your head held high because there is a lot of people who are Proud of you !
I found it very hard to bond with parents who had transphobic and homophobic views (let alone racist views), because innately I felt like their love for me was very conditional. This was something I couldn't put into words until I was old enough to, despite trying to express it before I could. When I would say "you only like me because I'm your kid, if we had no relation you wouldn't like me at all", my parents never understood what I was talking about.
@mmr9366 Yeah, the thing about that: their convictions and values are _inherently_ harmful to other people. When your “values” are built off the belief that a certain group of people is worse or gross for something they cannot change, then those aren’t values. They’re prejudices. And telling someone that their prejudice is hurting you or other people is not selfish. What *is* selfish is maintaining those beliefs in spite of the harm you know they’re doing. So in order for OP to “love their parents the way they are”, their parents first have to do the same for them. Relationships are a 2 way street my guy
@@Eee24790as a parent, I love my children unconditionally, which means accepting them for WHO they are. Parents should love their children for who they are and not who they want them to be.

Derek, I think that you are brave, and I am happy that you no longer are identifying with your parents ideology! Who wants to live a life hating others, when there is so much good you can do. Hate hurts the hater, as well as the hated. You aren't giving your all to anything you do when you hate, and if you hate, you don't know how to love. Like Tracy Chapman's song: "All that you've got, is your soul." It couldn't be more true! Thanks for sharing your story and good luck to you in your life's journey! : )
It's more complicated than that. Most bigots use bigotry to elevate themselves over other people (the people they're bigoted against and the allies and supporters of those people). They typically have a poor sense of self and self-worth, and they try (in vain) to compensate for it by trying to elevate themselves over other people. But without their bigotry, they would feel even worse about themselves and their own life (at least until they actually improve their life and/or how they perceive themselves). There's also often a social aspect, in which bigots enjoy a sense of community and belonging with other bigots. They often risk being rejected by family and friends, if they don't keep presenting bigotry. And there are a relative few who make money off of bigotry. And there's even more to it than that. It's a complex phenomenon, but we typically have an elementary school understanding of it.
The same can be said about Donald Trump!!! Trump wasted his entire life on worshiping money, power, greed, hate and retribution!!! Who wants to live like that??? I sure don't!!!! HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!!!!!
this is true...my father was like this, which is mind blowing because my mother was from the middle east, and when I grew up, he, disowned me because my hubby was b. the best day of my life was when my father did that...I started to live in peace. I hope when my father died and met his maker, He looked like Morgan Freeman in the FULL "Lean on Me" Joe Clark mode.
What a courageous person to speak their truth, even if it means being "disowned" by their biological family. I purposefully used the term "biological family," because "family" has so much more to do than with sharing genes. For me, "family" is a term that describes those with whom I feel spiritually connected to and with, people who are kindred spirits. Derek, you do have another "family" in this world, although not necessarily blood-related, which I'm sure you will meet along the way. That has been the case for me, and others I've known. This is not an easy life, not an easy world, but to live in truth, is to be alive. What a beautiful person you are!
Hats off to you putting this in your book , that is some struggle to first of all realise the hate within your community and your new social circle but also recognising yourself as trans. Your passion is amazing and it is so important that you have put your experiences in a book. I hope it inspires and gives strength to many others in their situations. Your short talk is certainly a reminder that all need allies and allies build healthier communities.
Seems like a nice person who wants to live an authentic life. Sorry the parents will miss out on their child's life. Make yourself happy. They will have to want to be a positive in your life, otherwise you are better off without negativity. One time around is all we get. Don't waste it.
His transgenderism might be just a reaction to his upbringing: he'll wake up in 7-8 years without his package, crying his eyes out once he realizes the deeper truth. Now that is pain: just go no contact with your past and family if they are not "good enough" for ya; no need to cut things off. People really need to study their own psyche. This refusal he has towards his own body: is a natural reaction to what he went through.
He also ends it with: "I also was hoping for a bit more curiosity from them dot dot dot"; this prooves my point that he craves their attention on why he is going transgender; It is a call for attention only: "What happened to you my son, please open up to us and well love you and comfort you". THAT is what he really is craving, not cutting off his balls.
This is meant as a life teaching for his father. He didn't take it and will have a difficult life if he doesn't take this teaching before he dies. He will have to come back until he does. I can't imagine having to hold on to the toxic hate all my life. It's such a waste of time and energy.

Reading all these comments, I can understand why this “particular little group of people” are so disliked by so many. The comments have been extremely rude. Hats off to the kind people who were berated like children for trying to understand the whole transgender thing, by asking questions, but the way you were treated in return, is actually not at all surprising to me. They want - demand - respect, but give none. I am NOT a CIS woman, I am a woman…and while this term is used by the transgender community to describe a woman, I won’t respect anyone by using their pronouns. Respect is a two way street.

Market highs can sometimes be followed by corrections, but predicting the timing and extent of it is challenging. I've heard some analysts talk about a 'massive' correction. It makes me wonder if it's time to adjust my $180k portfolio or maybe even consider some defensive investments.
Don't be in a hurry to get back in. The market needs several days of strong performance to signal that the downturn might be over; It's a time to be largely, if not entirely, in cash
I believe a healthy portfolio has 3 things, at the bare minimum: Exposure to ETFs for increased diversification, Exposure to assets that generate cash flow like dividend stocks, Exposure to market-leading tech.
De-risk your portfolios, shore up your core holdings, and take some profits while balancing your portfolio allocations. I’d also suggest you go with a managed portfolio, but even those don’t perform so well, so it’s best you reach out to a proper fiduciary to guide you, that’s what works for my spouse and I. Some folks take a while to change their name. The paperwork heavily depends on the state, and the process can take a long while, particularlly if they need original copies of legal documents. Then you need to have the document in case signed by a notary public before it will even float in court - sometimes there are additional fees and paperwork, though again it varies by state.

Exactly. Which is why Jehovah's Witnesses discourage their members from attending college. Except for the lawyers the J.W. Organization needs.

Some folks take a while to change their name. The paperwork heavily depends on the state, and the process can take a long while, particularlly if they need original copies of legal documents.
