Doom is coming, but personal gloom doesn't need to.
Even if we stopped 100% of all greenhouse gas emissions today, the effects of cumulative damage are irreversible. At minimum the biosphere will experience a 3 degree Celsius increase, unequally distributed, with the greatest warming at the poles. This is happening now, not in the distant future. When warming occurs at the arctic the cold air is displaced, disrupting the normally stable jet stream. This in turn causes more extreme weather patterns that result in things like people freezing to death in Texas and extreme heat deaths in Canada. The next time someone sarcastically says "Look how cold it is. Must be global warming.", you can articulate how this works in a way they may understand better.
According to the IPCC report even if all human activity was ended today the critical 1.5 degree Celsius tipping point will still be exceeded because the damage is cumulative, exponential and unrealized as of yet. No, not in the distant future, but within 10 years!
Carl Sagan once said that if you could shrink the earth down to the size of a basketball then the biosphere, where all life that we know of has existed, would be thinner than a layer of Saran wrap.
With that in mind, now consider that the planet Mercury averages only 36 million miles from the Sun with an average temperature of 354 degrees F, yet Venus at 67 million miles from the Sun has an average temperature of 847 degrees F because it has an atmosphere.
Humans are shorth lived creatures and have difficulty conceptualizing what falling off a cliff looks like on a geologic time scale. Earth is rapidly being converted into Venus.
The average commercial jetliner consumes the equivalent of about 8,000 days of air for a human JUST TO TAKE OFF, and about the same to land. A typical car will burn 40 days of air for a human per hour.
It's not oil we've been mining but something far more essential to life. By the way, you'll inhale about 30 pounds of air molecules today. Far more than you'll eat or drink.

"Earth is rapidly being converted into Venus."
Hmm, i'm not quite sure about this. I've heard of this runaway greenhouse effect theory, but most articles contradict that earth is moving in this direction, even the rather doomy ones, at least that's what i remember. Do you have any good sources for this claim?
But yeah, we're pretty much effd, even if earth is not turning into venus type conditions.

Humans, apparently, can only react to what they experience. So rather than following the precautionary principle, they are gradually becoming aware as things worsen. This is so predictably tragic it hurts.

@@RnanknOur problem dealing with climate lies in our genetics. Our brains are hardwired to respond to immediate threats to life and limb, not existential future threats. The bad news there of course being that we won’t respond until it’s way too late.
But since our larger ecological predicament is overshoot now with eight billion of us gobbling up the last vestiges of our own habitat, utterly dependent on fossil fuels and a globalized extraction, production and supply chain powered by the mighty workhorse Diesel engine that we cannot replace,
helping others to wrap their heads around climate change isn’t even relevant anymore.
I submit that there’s only one thing that matters at all anymore, the fight for life on planet Earth. The only life supporting system in the galaxy.

"Humankind cannot save the Earth with the same set of values that are destroying the Earth."
"Dominant society must come to recognize that we're all human beings. Recognize that our connection, to the reality of power, is in that identity, human. Our bone, flesh & blood, our DNA, is LITERALLY made up of the metals, minerals & liquids of the earth. We're part of the earth, shapes of the earth, like everthing of the earth. We have being, our being, our spirit & that being comes from our relationship to the sun, sky universe."
"We must go beyond the arrogance of human rights. We must go beyond the ignorance of civil rights. We must step into the reality of natural rights, because all of the natural world has the right to existence and we are only a small part of it."

Farmed fish spend their entire lives in cramped, filthy enclosures, and many suffer from parasitic infections, diseases, and debilitating injuries. These diseases spread to wild fish populations as well. Large-scale aquaculture can have significant environmental consequences too. It can take a lot of wild fish to feed certain farmed fish. And when tons of fish are crowded together, they create a lot of waste, which pollutes the ocean.

Here in Australia we have tens of thousands of years of human design ingenuity how to live ecocentrically (sustainably) in place - there’s not one way there’s over 500 different Nations of knowledge just in this country and over 5000 language groups globally.

I think that people are seeking this way of living on the earth. Being able to seek God and give thanks for what He has given. Too be apart of the enviroment. The Freedom Protests being held in Ottawa right now are a sign and symptom of this. Unfortunitly, many of the protestors shouting for freedom, don't know what type of freedom they are seeking. Stuck where money or the lack of it determines what is and isn't done.

He is wrong about history - the ruins we see on a planetary scale could not have been built by cavemen. Of course there is a reciprocity in our relationship to the Earth. But do not blame Joe Soap, blame education, corporations, govts and the elite who make the corporate, govt and educational decisions. We are part of nature, not apart from her. There is a movement on a global scale towards regenerative agriculture, which builds the soil, not eradicating it. You could fit Earth's population into Botswana, and have room for plenty more. Beware the green movement if it wants you in a smart city where your every thought and bowel-movement will be monitored and logged into your social-credit record, while the natural places will only be accessible to the elite. Derek Broze reminds us that, before whites became colonizers, they were colonized. When colonizers invaded, they told the indigenes that they were uncivilized savages unless they sh@t in their water (and they called it Sanitation!). And things have gone downhill since then. And we are still taking instructions from them, instead of listening to the Earth and our instincts. We have survived millennia without western medicine and the Earth can and does shrug us off when she pleases.
