    You have to slow down to 1/4 or 2/4 impulse or you can use an engineering power up for your ship turn rate to increase.

    What no one really credits this game for is how *free to play* it actually is.
    You get access to all of the story content FOR FREE!!!!
    There are very few F2P MMO games out there where that is true.
    Yes, it still has lockboxes and ingame stores, but most all of it is cosmetics and more ship designs and as a F2P game it's given that it is in there. But it doesn't limit you from playing the whole of the game!

    • @compmanio36
      @compmanio36 3 года назад

      It was this way, before the rebalance. Now with my primary character, I can sorta get through the whole story which has a T6+ ship that you normally have to pay for.
      With my other characters not quite as blessed? I can't get past the Vaadwaur missions.
      They made it so you have to pay to get past a certain point in the story now. Not unusual for F2P games.

    Great video and if I’m honest you are absolutely right on many topics you mentioned in this video
    When I first started playing I was overwhelmed by all there was to take in and understand after playing and engaging with the community I meet players joined fleets and that helped me further within my game
    As regards to lockboxes I have spent hundreds and hundreds of pounds on this game for zen store ships and lockbox keys yeah ok I’ve won a few ships but lost more than won
    I still play and still enjoy the game and I’m more focused on the pvp side of things which if you thought the main part of the game was a challenge you wait till you try pvp now that’s a whole new ball game

    Turn rate of the ship as well as other characteristics depends on the kind of engine you put on your ship according to your level and to the apropiate ship console.... Also the model of the ship affects this, some are faster or slower than others

    I find STO to be generally well-written and designed. Is it perfect? Not at all. It especially shows its age as a 10-year-old game in its engine, and it does have a number of potentially game-breaking bugs that Cryptic really should fix, but it is still very playable and engaging. Its playerbase is active and dedicated. And best of all it really does give you everything you need for free. It's also one of the few games to allow you to walk and fly around, and it has an incredibly high degree of customization to your character, your BOFFs, and your ship. At least if you're Starfleet. The KDF side really does need more love. I would genuinely be curious to see what Cryptic could do if they rebuilt STO using a modern engine, from scratch, essentially, so there wouldn't be any bugs. But they have said on stream a number of times they are a small team, and can only focus on new content or a rebuild, but not both. I think they just don't want to rebuild. Though it is true they are a smaller team, not like SEGA who can do new content for PSO2 while also rebuilding it and making an all-new game to attach to it.

    That said, I am easy prey to pay for new ships for any character I make and I'm really only prevented from buying more because of my budget...

    If anyone is woundering, now on 2024, if you want a really ~fun~ Online Multi/Singleplayer MMO to just pick up and play on your own way, this is it. You can literally play this alone without having to worry about other people unles you are in very specific Elite co-op missions, so you can just enjoy everything the game has to offer without the downsides of a MMO.
    You can customize the difficulty on pretty much anything, including co-op missions, and the game follows your pace, not the other way around.
    Also there are a ton of events still going for this game, lots of them give fresh new ships for players to have fun with and all you have to do is just play the game and when you can pay for some stuff on it, it don't feel forced nor bad since you can clearely see the efforts they did on making and keeping this game the way it is today.
    TL:DR
    Totally worth to play it on 2024.

    It does indeed take awhile to understand how the game works. In order to optimize your gear, especially on your ship, you need to understand what each one does, essentially, and the game doesn't exactly tell you that. Fortunately there are tutorial videos, and an active community who will stop making Gorn jokes and talking politics to help you. I generally look at DPS and effect descriptions, and generally do fairly well. Even against Vaaduar, Voth, and Iconians, who are meant to be the toughest adversaries in the game.
    I understand your gripe against ships with low Turn Rates, since I share them. So I tend to choose ships with higher turn rates, or add consoles that increase them, so I can use more agile ships. I hate the fact that my dreadnoughts seem to take forever to turn or stop, so I modify them with turn rate and speed consoles and gear. They're still not great, but they're better. Same goes for Engineering consoles that help with damage resistance, combined together with bridge officer abilities. How you build your ship does affect its survivability, however you do _not_ need to switch weapon energy types for different enemies.
    The most critical thing to understand about weapon energy types is not what they can do, it's that mixing energy types splits the buff you can get from the tactical consoles. One of the biggest mistake to make is mixing energy types. Yes, some consoles grant buffs to beam weapons or projectile weapons instead of specific energy types, however you get bigger buffs from gear that are specific to a single type. Choosing one single energy type and equipping gear that buffs that will optimize your ship in battle, however understand that with each subsequent console with the same buff, the effect deteriorates logarithmically, so they don't stack simply. This is reflected in your ship stats, which are visible any time.
    While there are different subtypes of each energy weapon, they all basically do the same thing at root. Phasers can offline a system. Polaron can offline a subsystem. Plasma and antiproton do additional damage. Disruptors and tachyon affect shields. Each of these weapons are equally viable against all enemies, and the choice comes down to a player's personal style. I generally choose phasers because I try to keep the enemy offline so they can't respond as quickly to my attacks. The best versions of a weapon are also often available through the boxes you get from doing the Reputation System.
    Yes, there are many currencies. EC is the basic one and lets you buy basic ones. You need Expertise for training, and Marks for fleet and reputation projects. Dilithium is used for some things as well, and can be exchanged for the publisher's currency, zen, meaning you don't need to pay a cent to play this game and access paid content.
    If you are not satisfied with the Tier 1-5 ships the game gives you for free (and I'm not), you can participate in the game's events to get about 3 Tier 6 ships for free. You can also pay zen to get individual ships or bundles from the C-store, which unlock for every character on your account. Even ones you create later. I avoid lockboxes, because the chances of getting a ship are practically non-existent, but if someone gives me a key I will likely use it. The alternative is, of course, to sell it on the Exchange for EC. Some T6 ships can also be purchased there. You can list up to 40 items on the Exchange at a time for 1 week or so, and there is no commission to be paid, so even as a new player you can make good EC this way.

  • @mintydog06

    The tactic of beating down shields then hammering them with torpedoes does work if you do it correctly. My Retrofit Enterprise D had pretty powerful dual Tetryon beams at the front, and I used them with buffts to increase their power, so I could charge a ship, strip the forward shields then a few torpedos later have them down to 60% health. Then just circle around and broadside them while the abilities are on cooldown.
    Eventually I got fed up with the game though, as combat was usually fight 3 medium ships, then fight a strong ship, then fight 3 medium ships, etc etc.

    I'd like to push back on Star Trek being a 'cheep show' It was actually pretty expensive for a TV show. That's why it was initially cancelled back in the day. Similarly, from Next Gen onwards the show had a decent budget going forward, though again, you have to adjust it for it being a TV show and not a movie.

  • @endykun
    @endykun 2 года назад

    There's actually a LOT more strategy here than you think. You've touched on exactly the bare basics of how the game works, and what they teach you in the tutorial(s). There's levels deeper than that. Re: Lockboxes: There's also a lot of free stuff and you don't HAVE to use lockboxes. Re: Labyrinthine Interface: MMOs have an interface problem because the original interface gets built on top of 5-10 times over as the game evolves, but no one ever takes the dev time to go back and re-work the interface. It sucks, but that's just an MMO problem.

    I've been playing STO on and off since it went free to play in 2011, and I remember how broken and badly written it was back then. It felt like game had been given the most broken toys and no writing team and told to build a game out of that. The quality of the game really seemed to pick up after Atari (owners of Cryptic at the time) sold the studio to Perfect World Entertainment and the release of Legacy of Romulus and playable Romulans soon after. A friend use to do a Star Trek podcast and would often interview people involved in the game and they knew their system was difficult but trying to fix it was like trying to change the wheel on a speeding car.

    The early point & click adventures wer efor their time actually very good. Actually expanded some of the Star Trek lore (i.e. defined some alien speicies that were only talked about before) had for their time extremly good production value (the version with audio had the original cast usually unheared of for adaptations at the time). Looking from today it might seem strange but point and click adventures were really modern back then and the Star Trek ones were accepted as very well done ones.

It does have its bright moments, but those moments are just part of a very messy and uneven whole. It's great if you wanna just jump in and start blasting your favorite Star Trek baddies with your favorite Star Trek ships (that you might have to pay for) and dress up your crew in your favorite Star Trek uniforms (that you might have to pay for), but I wouldn't go in expecting a coherent Star Trek experience

    I wish they would restructure the game where you receive a ship and can only modify it's systems slightly. Where the customization should be focused on is your crew and their efficiency to use those systems.
    The Enterprise D was not going through constant gear load out changes or using other alien races technology. Star Trek has always been about a top notch crew using their skills and intelligence to overcome a situation.
    And it would also be nice if diplomacy was integrated more instead of always engaging in combat. The Federation pretty much is genocidal in this game and they even have accolades for destroying thousands of ships.

    The way I break it down is... I LOVE Star Trek, I really like playing video games especially rpgs, yet this game is not that fun. I should love the crap out of this game but It is more tedious with little reward or payoff... I think to push the sales of digital goods.

    I think its gone very stale... same shit month after month... I miss the the huge season story arcs... also think its geared up to make you spend spend spend, which I dont mind if it would be worth spending on... plus it needs its graphic engine seriously updating.. might be worth starting over Star Trek online 2.0

  • @mbogucki1

    What I disliked about Star Trek Online is that you are stuck with other peoples crappy version of Star Trek.
    As a stickler for canon and recreating authentic uniforms/ships its...jarring to see someone running around with a pink/purple uniform farting fireworks and taking off in a neon blue colored Enterprise. At least that's how it was the last time I played, no clue if that still exists or if you can limit what you see.
    Also the game is very heavy on stats. For casual players its difficult to enjoy without blowing up every few missions, especially if all you want to do is have a phaser/photon old school type ship.

    You might try playing the game past just leveling before making a review video. The ship and ground builds are extremely indepth and I can tell by watching your space combat that you really didn't experience any of the games "end game" at all.

    interesting take; that a star trek game had to much star trek stuff in it...

    • @boobah5643
      @boobah5643 4 года назад

      The complaint, as I parsed it, was that a _Star Trek_ game had too much rehashed (as opposed to original) content in it. It's a kind of flip side, though, to the big fish in a small pond (TV show main cast member) turning out to be almost as large a fish in the ocean.

    I got to the 2:32 mark & had to stop. This person clearly has no idea about the game. Yes, the turn rates are slow at first, but that changes depending on what ship you have, abilities, & equipment. The strategy is not out the window, it is the core of a person’s play. So many things go into how a battle is won. 🤦🏻‍♀️

    The problem with combat balance in this game in general is that if you don't have a decent build, it's really tough, and there are a lot of odd difficulty spikes, like the Vaadwaur. The Vaadwaur are the first real modern enemy in terms of how they were designing things at the time. By that point, how to "build" a character had been completely figured out, so anyone with a decent understanding of the game was on the same footing. With them, the Tzenkethi, etc, you need a strong build, but beyond that, WHAT your build is doesn't matter as long as it's a good one, what matters is how you play against them. Sounds like your build just wasn't very good when you did this video. That's not a knock on you, quite the opposite. The way the game TELLS you to build versus the way the game EXPECTS you to build, are as far apart as Earth Spacedock and the fucking Ocampa homeworld.
