- "In this first lecture of the course, I would like to give you an outline of the new understanding of life that is now emerging at the forefront of science. As I mentioned before, it is a conception of life based on systemic thinking and some of the new concepts and mathematical techniques of complexity theory. It allows us for the first time to integrate the biological, cognitive, and social dimensions of life".

I've read "The Web of Life", "Ecological Literacy" and "Hidden Connections". He is a very intelligent man and I enjoyed the change in my thinking processes these books brought about.
I met Fritjof Capra in Liverpool at a conference, and shook his hand. I was VERY honored to meet this great man.
I was privileged to meet this extraordinary man in 1982 at the Transpersonal Conference in Bombay. We briefly discussed his "Tao of Physics" and I was impressed by how fluently he conveyed complex ideas in a manner which made them accessible to the participants. I am even more impressed today.
And reminded of the once very controversial ideas of Teilhard de Chardin, now beautifully honed for presentation to a more open-minded era.
True.
Structure, pattern, process. Brilliant.
Brilliant thinking. Thanks for making this publicly available!
Thank you, Fritjof, thank you.
People should know that everything is connected. Somehow, many still believe that mind and body are different things, the same way they judge social and material aspects.
That's nice to have people like Capra helping to clear such distorced visions.
Nice video!! Ecological philosophy, aways!!
I, in the course of reading on sociology of science, came across a video on the book 'The Systems View of Life'. I had read Tao of Physics, Turning Point and Uncommon Wisdom a few years ago. To realign all of them and more new books by him in this book makes it a rewarding reading. In some sense i recently came across a book 'Nature Philosophy' by FWJ Schelling and am intrigued that there is no mention of this, in this book!
Great job Mr Capra, and thanks for posting this. I hope to use it with my work at the Federation of Canadain Municipalites.
Let's accept that we are all interconnected. Many of us know this is a fact. Life has brought us to this point and if we interfere and damage this system, life breaksdown. We must live an integral life with nature and breakdown the financial conglomorates who disregard this fact.
Tao of Physics is a fantastic book
The key concept i have grasped is that new kind of science should evolve in this century, where distinction between discplines will cease. Therefore a new language should grow, shared among scholars and crosssciplinary models to read reality should be devised.

Great...I need this for my 2nd phase of my masters.
I always enjoy Fritjof Capra's books. I never understand how western doctors see patients in term of physics and chemistry.
I agree but up to a certain extent - we need a creative disonance, or a corrective adjustive process - Kapra has interesting parallels with peter bugers book - The Theory of the Avant-garde.
I am not saying that structure is to be avoided. But there are severe syntax errors that we then perpetuate and manifest. The structure Capra refers to already pre-exists non locally as one thing, which we may choose to forever partially address with numerals. It is self evident that when one has (for instance) 2 cups
There are NOT 2 instances of the original cup. There are similar (somewhat) objects that occupy one space and then another.
I sympathize, I'm supposed to watch a flick (for a class) called Mindwalk this guy produced and I am having trouble following him on this diatribe.
checkout wikipedia~#"Effeminacy is a trait in males that generally contradicts traditional male (masculine) gender roles. It is a derogatory term frequently applied to femininity; or womanly behavior, demeanor, and appearance displayed by a man, typically used implying criticism or ridicule of this behavior (as opposed to, for example, merely describing a man as feminine, which is more neutral).
gah..i have to watch this for my GISAT class...i can't even get passed the first 30 seconds
i second that!
tnx for the explanation. But I stay with this: what counts on a situation (and its interpretation) is the intentionality of the speaker, mainly if the speaker is not a native one (that is my case, information which you must have realized here, given that you don't seem to be an altist). Plus: you've mixed up a country (Brazil) with a citizen of it. That's what we in transcendental philosophy calls 'intellectual immaturity', or in Logics: fallacy! Have a nice time.

my idol
Yes.
@ipublica i do not love einstein but capra and sagan and da vinci yes
Hi Dr.Fritjof Capra: Can you define and explain the term" Tao" use in your book"The Tao of Physics"? Are you apply the term used in Chinese definition of Tao (Dao). I will appreciate you can answer this question, then I will respond to your answer

I've started reading Tao of physics today only....
X favor que venga el vídeo en español...
Is he talking about creating a biosphere in outerspace, didn't they already try that?
I'll try to answer extempor in limited #of characters allowed. Capra begins with characterized structure and ends with structure therefore. The "web" of life in full bloom is not dissected into numbers. The number 2 is a convenient fiction, useful dependent upon intent and purpose--and not just...individual (?) intent...or finite purpose. answers lie in this...direction.
If we are meant to emulate the innate rules of nature will we not also have to give up what is considered our human distinction. Nature is very clear about the survival of the fittest and feels no remorse about the sacrifice of the weak in order to survive. How do we adjust to such a primary determination and continue to be human? Are we not not focussing on an elite that is capable of creating an ecologically viable system to live in that would have to exclude the vast majority of people who are not developed enough to be able to participate in it. And then what do we do about those people?
"Survival of the fittest" is so widely misunderstood that most experts in evolutionary theory recommend not using this 'shorthand' description of natural selection. For one thing, natural selection applies to entire populations rather than individuals. If a small group within a population consume all the resources, or spreads disease, then the entire population is threatened. (Therefore "The Darwin Awards" misuses Darwin's name). If we cut off part of the population, we destroy our environment, and *break* 'the innate rules of nature'.
"Fitness" means "aptness", rather than being buff, muscular, well-nourished or any other popular idiomatic interpretations. It means to be 'a good fit for your environment'. W.R.Ashby says "Every piece of wisdom is the worst folly in the opposite environment." And environment is made up of other organisms too. Penguins, successful in the antarctic, are not found in the (very similar) North Pole. They would not last long. Too many hungry bears. They are not fit for that environment.
Fitness might mean 'consumes fewer resources' (e.g. the sloth). It might mean 'fat' (e.g. cetaceans). It might mean 'co-operative' (e.g. lichens).
And in natural selection, 'fitness' is comparative rather than superlative. (You don't need to outrun the bear if you can outrun your friend). Another systems pioneer, Gregory Bateson proposed 'survival of the fitter' as a more accurate description, emphasising that selection is based on optima rather than maxima. He also pointed out that maximizing a single parameter (e.g. money, or high-fructose corn syrup, or even oxygen) is invariably toxic in the long run.
That's not to say that systems theoretical jargon is never used to justify crap or dangerous policies. We are sleepwalking from surveillance capitalism into high-tech fascism because of such starry-eyed nonsense from the tech community, and they are indeed caught in their own bubble, while wars and famine and extinction rage outside. But it is ignorance, hubris and cognitive bias that are to be blamed for that. Most serious systems theory emphasises that we need to get better at thinking about problems, more inclusively, and with an awareness of context. Perfect knowledge (a sacred falsehood of mainstream economists) is impossible. If we exclude people (or their ideas, or other organisms) there is always a cost. Often a fatal one.
sound more like a proposal
I Love Brazil aye ;)))
I guess not....whatever that means.
could he think of indonesian environment by the time he speaking
= "Not your thing"
oh dear. all you have to do is click on username and you see me. I do it all the time ;)
I am well aware of the terrible poverty and violence in Brazil, and how many middle class Brazillians dont wanna talk about it...!
I love the MUSIC. not that. and I am Gay...LOL
why do you judge things so quick and make a fool of yourself for. Do you imagine it might make people respect you?
I dont really see why i should have to explain, or suffer fool gladly, only to say: of COURSE i have read his books! And i have met him and shook his hand, and was part of workshop with him.
Obviously you have learned no intelligence FROM JUST reading his books right?
The term effeminate is most often used by people who subscribe to the conventional view that men should conform to traditional masculine traits and behaviors."
Also the Nazis used it in such a way.
Now look mate. I have no problem with you. But to be so personal like that is sure sing of immaturity, and not knowing how to relate to people.
Also it is not good impression of Brazil!
I guess that this approach just doesn't match your "skill set".
you are not mature person.
that is a fact.
have a nice time
you are totally wrong. I just said a fact: you're efeminate. I did not aplly any moral judgement. You did. Second, I don't know what cheeky bugger means (but it really sounds like a insult, as well as when you call me ignorant... when you don't know myself neither my history of life; you're being precipitated). Third, I apologize you here, if I disrespect you, anyway. If I did, it was not my primordial intention. RIght? Have a nice Sunday.

ps: I'm Brazilian. And have no problem...
