CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The Queen (Judi Dench) saves Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) from arrest and Viola (Gwyneth Paltrow) from being outed as a woman.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
William Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) is on a cold streak. Not only is he writing for Philip Henslowe (Geoffrey Rush), owner of "The Rose," a theatre whose doors are about to be closed by sadistic creditors, but he's got a nasty case of writer's block. Shakespeare hasn't written a hit in years. In fact, he hasn't written much of anything recently. Thus, the Bard finds himself in quite a bind when Henslowe, desperate to stave off another round of hot-coals-to-feet application, stakes The Rose's solvency on Shakespeare's new comedy, "Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter." The problem is, "Romeo" is safely "locked away" in Shakespeare's head, which is to say that not a word of it is written. Meanwhile, the lovely Lady Viola (Gwyneth Paltrow) is an ardent theatre-goer -- scandalous for a woman of her breeding -- who especially admires Shakespeare's plays and, not incidentally, Bill himself. Alas, she's about to be sold as property into a loveless marriage by her mercenary father and shipped off to a Virginia tobacco plantation. But not before dressing up as a young man and winning the part of Romeo in the embryonic play. Shakespeare soon discovers the deception and goes along with it, using the blossoming love affair to ignite his muse. As William and Viola's romance grows in intensity and spirals towards its inevitable culmination, so, too, does the farcical comedy about Romeo and pirates transform into the timeless tragedy that is Romeo and Juliet.

"But I do know something of a woman in a man's profession. By God I do know about that." Great line.
You should know !
Y la genial actuación de Judi Dench
"you seem an eager boy"
nice reference to John Webster, the next generation play writer with a lot of death and dying in his works, such as the Duchess of Malfi.
Imagine having that much power that with one sentence you could bring an entire theatre to it's knees.
Mel1lvar Sadam Hussein, Hitler, Stalin, and Mao Zedong all had that power.
Beyonce'
Dame Judy Dench is used to it.
@@All_you_need_is_love2018 none could do that.
Well, I mean she is the monarch.
"That woman is a woman!"
"What?A woman?You mean that goat?"
the dude in the lady costume felt insulted
The way she slightly squints her eyes at 1:33 when Viola doesn’t bow properly. Masterful.
She bowed as a woman when she should be bowing as a man if she's pretending to be a man playing a woman
"But I know something of a woman in a man's profession."
LIKE A QUEEN.
0:53 - It is a testament to what an epic actress Judi Dench is the magnificent elegance with which she made her appearance. Every head bowed and every knee bent when they realized the Queen herself was there. She looked every square inch the dignified grace and authority of Elizabeth herself and commanded the poise and presence of that legendary English monarch masterfully. Say what you will. Judi Dench WAS Queen Elizabeth I in this performance. Brilliantly done!
morbius109 I just watched the whole movie, what a great actress!
She truly deserved that Oscar. My greatest respect to one elegant actress.
Dame Judi Dench OWNED this movie like a QUEEN!! every scene she was in she steal it with her performance, totally a worthy oscar win.
Oh, man. The way she delivers those lines at 1:49 always makes me reflect. Deep resolve, profound pride, a bit of regret, and an unrelenting burden are all there at once! Brilliant. For a brief moment, it makes me imagine that I could understand the depths of Queen Elizabeth I's challenges. Stellar acting. One of my favorites moments in film.
Dench owns this scene
she upstaged everyone each time she appeared.
Didn't she win an Oscar or Golden globe for this? Best supporting actress maybe?
She certainly did... but not everyone was overly thrilled about that..
@@davidgans4285 Their loss. I would have rather Joan Allen win if she'd been nominated but Dench did an excellent job with her brief time.
"The Queen of England does not attend exhibitions of public lewdness." Single greatest line in the movie.
The quote “ A woman in a Men’s profession “ refers to the historical fact that Henry VIII murdered and divorced so many of his wives because they did not provided him with a male heir. He never wanted his daughter, Elizabeth, to become queen. Henri VIII thought that only a strong King would keep his kingdom together. Little he knew that Elizabeth would become the greatest English monarch.
Indeed, Belmont79!! What a supreme irony that Anne Boleyn would give birth to such a powerful monarch! Personally I think Henry Vlll was a failure as a King, a despot. Queen Elizabeth was such a better monarch.
That’s not entirely true.. Henry VIII named Mary and Elizabeth as his heirs, before he passed..
Yeah it's interesting that Edward VI is the least memorable of his 3 children
@@bobbyb7979
Edward, from most contemporary accounts and the historical record, had everything it takes to be a great monarch.. He was studious, engaged in political theory from a young age, and he was pious, but not to a fault.. He was a kind and generous person, and had a loving relationship with his family, especially his much older sisters..
No guarantees, of course, but it would be interesting if history changed and he lived to sit on the throne..
And how the Church of England is only a thing because the Vatican wouldn't grant him the divorce he wanted.
Ha it's like the old fashioned way of say "That's my name don't wear it out!" Love how she owns the men like a boss!
Mr. Tilney: (Pointing at Viola) That woman, is a woman!(Ralph playing the part of the Nurse takes offense to protect Viola)
Ned: (Quickly picking up on it) What?! A woman?! (Gestures to Ralph) You mean that goat?!
That was the funniest part of the movie for me.
Darn right the crowd parts like the ocean for Judi Dench, bow to her awesomeness!
1:35 “Gurl, I’m doing you a FAVOR.”
0:57 And THAT is why she won the Oscar.
I keep replaying it
I am now reasonably sure Judi Dench's version of Elizabeth I and Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess must be distantly related through time. Its the only way to explain such epic levels of bad-assery.
Leland Wood A lot of people talk about how beautiful Cate Blanchett was as Elizabeth I (and she certainly was and nonetheless made a great performance). But at the same time, Judi Dench as Elizabeth I in general was a bit more accurate than Blanchett's portrayal.
Anyone notice that the "old goat" is Carson from Downton Abbey? :)
+Doug Bailey Oh, hey, that's right! I didn't notice that.
Oh yeah!
Thank you! And the other man on the stage, besides Simon Callow, is Doc Martin, aka Martin Clunes.
I died at “that woman is a woman!”
some have complained that Judi Dench should not have gotten the Best Supporting Oscar that year because she was in the film for under 10 minutes (I think). I say that her delivery of those two lines deserved the award. She conveyed the entire history of Elizabeth's life and reign up to that point in those few words. Amazing.
1:50 always stuck with me. At that moment, Queen Elizabeth wasn’t her title, she was a fellow woman standing in solidarity with another woman; a shared struggle. I would imagine Judi Dench herself knows about that too.
Joseph Fiennes has some experience in dealing with Queen Elizabeth.
Dudley!
Fabulous! Dame Judi is always wonderful, and the rest of the cast simply superb. The period costumes were not only authentic but gorgeous.
Such a wonderful film! I do miss great movies like this.
It’s extraordinary how she doesn’t blink once. A truly commanding display of power
Loving her ladies' maids standing beside her looking badass:)
Theatre within a movie engulfing 2 of the best Shakespeare´s plays!!!!simply great!
Queen Liz was always epic :)
You can see her eyes change ever so slightly when wanting "Kent" to bow, not curtsy. Warning with the flash of her eyes not to waste the moment she is giving her.
Judy Dench is drenched in glory and greatness in this scene, majestic as this scene is and amazingly wonderful and hauntingly accurate as her performance in this scene was, as she NAILED IT PERFECTLY, BEAUTIFULLY AND SEAMLESSLY. The real Queen Elizabeth would have been deeply honored, and flattered. Great job!
My favourite movie of all time
I thought Geoffrey Rush and Tom Wilkinson owned the movie, as did Colin Firth, Imelda Staunton, Rupert Everett, Ben Affleck... Hell, it was a great ensemble!
She is such a camaleonic actress, very sustained, complete, she´s amazing. she actually owned the whole movie with her 8 min appearance in it.
Dame Dench just ROCKS man, that's all I wanted to say!👍🔥🔥🔥❤
You certainly hit the nail on the head - She certainly OWNED this movie by her performance.
it means that 8 minutes of Judi Dench is still better than 3x90 minutes of Kristen Stewart.
michelrpg she did great in the few minutes of screen time she had
HRH Dame Judy Dench!!
Love this film. Just love it. 💜
Dame Judith. Phenomenal 🙏🏽
Judi and Gweneth did not hate each other, they went along well with each other nicely.
Her request to Shakespeare..she knew that Viola's "companion" at her presentation to the Queen was Shakespeare and quietly called him out on it.
Onun salı gün gibi uzun olması kedinin dudaklarımı yudum yudum öpmedi.
This Queen ROCKS!!!!!
Her Majesty
the movie is bery beatifull
Judi Dench did such a good job in this movie she won the Academy Award for Best Actress which she did an excellent job of the role of Elizabeth in this movie. Love her performance.
Supporting Actress.
Best Actress went to Jim Carter.
Totally agree
Best movie.
The Academy loves theatrical movies soo much
Crap like this always gets an award, while real movies don't
🎉❤ susuz yazdan hiçbir zaman Sensiz boynundan geçmez❤❤😢😊❤❤❤❤
1:40 oh Lord Robert!
Yas Queen
Awarded an Oscar for those eight minutes too. What's that say about her performance?
You dont say ,..
LOL XD
I think its ironic because she replaced the role of 'M' in the Bond films when it was a man for 16 films
Wow, that actress playing Elizabeth was great!
Robert Boulay Judi Dench
"THAT WOMAN IS A WOMAN!"
And make the next one more cheerful!
Length of time on screen is not what makes a role significant, it's the power of the performance. And she OWNED this movie, despite being on-screen for less than 10 mins. Yes she should've won an Oscar for Mrs. Brown and Iris as well, but her Oscar for this role was definitely deserved. And I also find it hilarious that you know her inner feelings and know that she was upset at winning an Oscar--dude, just be quiet LOL
Judy Dench was in roughly 8 minutes in this movie. And she OWNED the entire movie within those 8 minutes. She played the mother of all bitches (and kindred spirits) in it :)
A Powerful Elizabeth the 1st.
If only Lord Wessex were here...too funny when the boy ratted him out lol! Lord wessex was trying to sneak out.
that boy is John Webster, the writer of Jacobean drama with much blood and gore, best known of his work is The Duchess of Malfi.
Glad you agree. Yah Dench is realy upset beacause she dident want this to be the movie she would be rememberd for, she wanted to win in a movie where she was important and significant(and in it for more then 6 minutes)
Hasret gizleme garip kalbimde sende vücut bulur
What a remarkable movie... Absolutely beautiful and fantastic
Words of undeniable fact.
Judy Dench was amazing as Elizabeth
/And/ she won an Oscar for it!
Best SUPPORTING Actress. Cate Blanchett was nominated for Best Actress (also as Elizabeth I in "Elizabeth") but lost to Gwenyth Paltrow in this film.
Wow! I didn’t know that. I haven’t seen “ Shakespeare “ - was Gwenyth really that good in this? I have to see this because to beat Cate Blanchett it had to be a great effort.
In hindsight, we all know why Gwyneth won the Oscar. With all due respect to her performance here, which is very decent by any standard, her win at the Oscars was almost certainly politically engineered. Cate Blanchett is one of the most prolific and talented actresses of all time, and certainly the best of her generation. If she had won, which she should have in terms of artistic quality, the same character, Queen Elizabeth I, would have been portrayed in two Oscar-winning performances in the same year, which would have been quite remarkable (Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro won Oscars for their portrayal of Vito Corleone in two different editions). But, as Cate once famously said to Charlie Rose, this defeat and frustration propelled her to keep going and seek to improve herself, since success and complacency only cause stagnation, but in her case her persistence in trying to avenge herself of this unmerited defeat led to her subsequent magnificent performances (of which there have been many indeed) which made her into the phenomenal actress that she is today. If necessity is the father of success, failure must be its mother.
judy dench (?) is so cool
Master Shakespeare is also Robert Dudley
❤😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 o atı cihanından yakalad
Ossu eyosu vawaqio uno hassaton.❤
Crazy when you think about how Queen Elizabeth reigned during Shakespeare’s lifetime and she only passed away a few weeks ago. Really puts the sheer length of her reign into perspective
This is elizabeth I your talking about elizabeth 2
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
To somebody close to her it must have seemed that long.
0:58
I keep replaying it
@michelrpg because only judi dench could win an Oscar with 8 minutes
🎉her yaprak öpüşü yüzde yüz aşkın konuşmasıdır.
Elizabeth I, introduced what we now know as ‘free speech’. Her reasoning was how do you know what people really think if they aren’t allowed to speak freely.
It led to many great writings, plays, literature, and the concept of what we call today news and media.
She has deserved 3 oscars in her life, but this was not one of them! Every other nominee that year deserved it more then her. If you watch her award video you can tell she is realy upset, and shocked that she won.
Judi Dench has awesome presence, she just sucks in your attention.
As a "fan" of English history, I love this movie. It paints a beautiful and accurate portrait of late Tudor England. And I love Judi Dench as Queen Elizabeth....but I can't exactly see Elizabeth as sympathetic...not after all the Catholics she had hanged and beheaded.
I still don’t see why this movie got best picture over Saving Private Ryan?
Intelligent people who love nuance in love
Over “boom boom” big boys with guns don’t cry, might have voted.
Just like Mary did...along with several other monarchs before and after her.
THAT WOMAN…. IS A WOMAN
❤Love has no place in my head anymore. I postponed it to a later date. Heaven is my door. My generation attracts the high waters. The moon is right in the middle, my face shines looking at it
Who stole it?
*Saving Private Ryan deserved Best Picture*
1588 and 1788 ha!
My God - Cate Blanchett did do an unbelievable role as Elizabeth.
She should have won too. Too bad there wasn't a 2nd Oscar for her performance.
Ill tell you what, watch her Oscar video right now and you will see how much she hate her win.
Pepper Potts
Batman
Harry Heart
Captain Barbosa
Philomena
Carmine Falcone
Delores J Umbrage
Arthur Weasley
1.50 Totally Denched!!! She denches the whole scene!
Did you like the play?..
I liked it when she stabbed herself, ma’am..
Lol..
John Webster's love for death and gore started young it seems. He later would make a carreer writing plys about it.
🙄🙄🙄
😂 ruhun çam sskızıx
"Shakespeare In Love" was a stolen script. Don't worship thieves.
I’m sure Shakespeare wouldn’t be fond of those warping his life for profit, either.
Biz Allah'tan halk olduk. Maksudi nedir dudaklar tül ile sarı durak. Halk arasında yaygın olan söz gibisin.Herkesin dilinde sen yalnız değilsin; bir Gül'sü habibim. Aleyküm Selam❤😊🤩🌠😎💣😂😮
I like Judi Dench, but the fact she won this oscar was just stupid!
She deserved it
