Yeah, the only way to get better is just too keep doing it. You can listen to people tell you how, but all it really does is go in one ear and out the other. Like you said it's the subtle things and values that make a drawing or painting go too the next level. Nice drawing I haven't drawn in a while, I just paint whenever I do something. Drawing and useing pens and inks are a whole different discipline and so fun. Painting suits me more because it's so care free, you have to plan a drawing or ink drawing so it has a different feel to it I find.
Good points! Yeah I usually mostly paint too but I’m trying to get back into drawing more because I know it’s helpful. Haven’t gotten into pen or ink yet. If I do it’s usually reallly sketchy and rough stuff.

RUclips is recommanding me so much cat contents : cats sleeping, bathing, playing, acting stupid, drawing cats. I think youtube wants me to get a cat 👀 Edit : I got two kittens and they are adorable 😍
The drawing was actually bigger than the photo. The photo reference was on my computer screen. You can use a black and white photo if you like. I used strathmore drawing paper size 14 x 17, 300 series.
In January I'm going to Antarctica. While im there I really want to comnect to the things that I see. Instead of just taking pictures I wanted to paint the landscapes and wildlife I come across. But as cold as its going to be My paint will freeze. Any tips for those of us changing our focus from the brush to the pencil?
That sounds so cool. What an awesome trip. If you use drawing pencils, I would just try to bring 2, a lighter one and a darker one - in case you want to add any values or shading. My personal preference would be to bring some ink pens like fine liners and a brush pen. Can fill in values much quicker, but that's just me. I don't like using graphite much these days. Don't overthink it and have fun, enjoy your trip! :)
Thanks for the feedback. It was actually a tough decision for me because I wanted to show the reality of drawing so that most would understand how light to start out in the beginning because I've seen a lot of drawings that start out too dark and it's hard to fix as the drawing progresses. But I do understand where you're coming from. My main concern was getting across concepts to apply to your own drawings, rather than a follow along or something like that. Hope that makes sense :)
Apologies for my English. perhaps what I write is not so precise, I just want to make sure that my message is understood as personal doubts in my" growth " as an artist, my intention is not to criticize what you teach or what I see in your videos, on the contrary, rather to thank you for your work. After a little explanation before this message goes. There you go... The good thing I see in that process is that you save a lot of rubber, that is, a lot of time in erasing, but the time you save, you use it to measure each stroke, creating each stroke as mechanically. I think you gain more accuracy in your drawings but I think you miss that sense of adventure and pleasure in knowing if your eye and your hand can do a very good job on their own in achieving the resemblance? While eye measurement is much more difficult, it brings its fruits in the long term but I know that until one is perfected it takes a lot of rubber to erase and a lot to start again and try again. I love how you got the resemblance. Possibly doing it without so many lines to measure will be harder to get. Maybe in my opinion this technique will remind me of the grid or approach it and when I use it I feel that I cheat and I stop, besides in many occasions I end up making so many lines of measurement that I miss and I forget what I was doing, in the end I only make the box of the composition and I begin to measure eye by my pencil, looking for the following strokes, but still, if over time I managed to improve, the process of achieving the resemblance is very long and the failures that I have not noticed today I see and correct them the next day. Could I read your opinion if it's not too much trouble? I follow your tutorials are very good and very useful for me. Excellent drawing and congratulations! Thank you so much for sharing your video.
I usually always measure with my eye first and draw a line - and then use comparative measuring to double-check what I put down if needed. You can see in the beginning of the video, I lightly draw the outline of her ears and top of the head and then I check it with some measuring. This video only shows one method I use, this was more of an academic approach for me with all the straight lines, etc.
I understand your point and I don't disagree. But most students start out their drawings and sketches too dark - so this also shows how light they should be in the beginning. Very light.
I like the softness you’ve achieved by layering gradually. Beautiful texture in the fur.
Thank you, it was quite challenging.

LOOKS EASY BUT NOT!!!
Definitely not easy at all. Takes a lot of time and practice as stated in the video 😊

Just so you know, I can't see your HB lines hardly at all. It might be helpful in tutorial to make darker lines for clarity for us beginners.

@@SchaeferArt Thank you very nuch for your advices. Your videos are very usefulles. Thanks a lot!!

Would you like to elaborate? lol
Your light sketch lines are too light for the audience to see you need to make them darker for your students
I understand your point and I don't disagree. But most students start out their drawings and sketches too dark - so this also shows how light they should be in the beginning. Very light.
3 minutes in and I still can’t see your lines to compare to mines 🥲
