Had a wife who had terminal cancer and had several major operations, chemotherapies etc. No waiting for treatment at any stage, local hospital was marvellous. I have been in for various treatments over the years including a minor stroke 18 months ago and had 4 MRI,s over 2 days and 1 follow up 4 weeks later. All free and first class Wouldn't even consider rip off Health Insurance.

When I had my heart attack, I was in public hospital and a gentleman was transferred from a private hospital as the cardiac unit I was in could treat his heart (apparently it was a complicated case). I have never had an issue when needing urgent care.

The private hospitals are much nicer to stay in - they even offer a wine list!🙃
Private health insurance is very efficient for elective surgery (you don't get put on a waiting list) but generally, if you have a critical health problem that requires urgent attention the public system is still very good.

NZ provide care in the home. It's not means tested, but you do have to be assessed to see what level of care you need. Yes people will come and help with hygiene cares housework even meals and medication. Perhaps no gardening

😊Good afternoon Liz and Brian. That was a very interesting subject to listen to on my drive home from work tonight. I've always thought i didn't need health insurance but I'm now beginning to wonder if i do. Waiting lists seem to be longer or non existent for some health issues but have never had an issue with the health system Have always received great care in the public system. 🤔

Good afternoon, Susan. I hope your drive home went quicker for having listened!
Yes, as we said in the episode, we, too, have never had private health coverage. None of our family have. As you know, my mum is receiving cancer treatment at the moment, and her public care has been first-class. We are so grateful for that. Thank you, NZ ❤
B and I are also grateful to be in good health but are aware that this may not always be the case, and should we safeguard ourselves for the future? ...hmmm...It's one of those topics that you either do, or you don't, I guess. Rather like shall we send our kids to private school kind of deal (or homeschool them like we did??!) It's a personal thing and a very individual choice. And of course, finance comes into play (although, as I said in the show, the cost was a lot less than I anticipated).
Whatever anyone decides to do, our hope is that this episode sheds light on what (for me and Bri at least) is a subject not many people talk about but are always curious to know more about.
Anyway, enough of my rambling! All this to say, thank you for listening, and we hope you enjoyed delving into this topic with Lance as much as we did.
Have a wonderful day, lovely lady, and stay strong and well. We need you here with us every week! All love, Liz x 🥰

Drugs cost, and NZ could never afford all the drugs that people need. That being said, I was extremely lucky to be one of the first women to get Herceptin-free. Save my life. I think when overseas countries are finding new drugs more effective and it would help significant numbers NZ is slow at including this treatment for free

Just watched and there wait time in private health care. So yes it may be shorter then public but there is also a wait time. Also if your situation is serious you will be seen that is why the non urgent people have to wait longer. You say have walked through a private oncology center have you actual seen and talked to people that work in the public system or is it just your opinion that the public system rush's the process

Don't be like that - it helps to demystify things for some of us who have wondered about this subject for some time. I realize we Kiwis like to still believe in an egalitarian society where it doesn't matter what your financial circumstances are .....and that our public services are top-notch and everyone gets first-class care - unfortunately, reality is never quite how we'd like it to be. It's the same with the most expensive private schools - they far out-perform the public schools. I know one well-known Auckland private school has only eleven boys per class - it is such a huge advantage for the boys who get far more personal attention.
