    This is just a great little story. A cool and quirky boat and a sweet, young couple. The production quality is high and the drama quotient is very low. One of the very few vlogs that I follow.

    You make some great videos, and I can appreciate a couple sailing with a frugal lifestyle more than people for whom money isn’t much of a problem.

    Thanks for sharing your lovely sunset views and your adventures. A nice mix of history, photography and sailing detail about the places you visit. Belated happy birthday greeting afloat. You’re a great couple making the best of any opportunity that presents itself as evidenced by impromptu boat work. Best wishes.

      Hi Andy, yes - we couldn't work out which one it was, it was black (or nearly black) but seems like a couple are. It was beautiful anyway - shame we only saw it motoring not sailing. The storks build huge nests, it's been lovely seeing them around in Portugal - they pop up everywhere there's a high spot to build their nest, they particularly like the Staples advert near the boatyard! Refit went great and we're currently sat in the Guadiana (see our Facebook for pics if you're interested)

      Hi again , the Deisel heater uses about a litre per day for 6 - 7 hrs of use. A 80
      amp/h battery last for three days without charging on the solar panel. I think that the 5kw may be better as you have the aft cabin but they are the same price apx. It took me about 3 days to fit it completely, that's for all the pipe work into three outlets. The 5kw will allow for 4 outlets but its nice to have one of the outlets in the heads, no more damp towels and warm air near the shower tray too. Safe sailing and fair winds

      Cheers guys. Sometimes we kind of wish we crossed like you did, but we're not sure we can work from our laptops as easily on the other side of the pond ;) Heating is such a complicated thing to figure out for a tiny boat like ours, so we think we made the right decision in the end. Fair winds for your next sails and we send a kissy to Leo :)

    • @KnotVikings
      @KnotVikings 6 лет назад +2

      yeah, I can imagine that the heating can be hard, in our old boat a 24ft mono we had a small cast iron wood stove. it worked really well but really smoked up the boat Haha! The Internet has actually been surprisingly good, on the French island we have roaming as normal and that has been working great, especially since we were stuck in Martinique for ages!

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  6 лет назад +1

      We heard the internet is good on the European islands, yes. Do you know how 3G/4G is on the other islands by any chance?

    • @KnotVikings
      @KnotVikings 6 лет назад +2

      barbados (FLOW) had really good 4G better than some European countries, Saint Lucia has passable 3G it's a bit expensive so we end up hunting for Wifi a lot instead, the rest we are not sure about....

    Am an avid fan of your channel, so when you mentioned "Denis Gorman single hander" I looked him up. Then bought his book (A Voyage to the Sea, Kindle ver) and am at the point where he has just bought Lizzie-G. WHAT A GREAT READ!! I relate to him on so many levels. Hard to put it down. Man, you lot are really inspiring this 62 year old to get back to the water!
    Does Denis have a YT channel or a blog or website? I'd love to follow him, can't find him online, and somehow I think he might not have time for such things lol
    Anyway thanks for all the joy you bring to us all, God Speed and fair winds 😊🙏🏻

    Another great update, thanks. Having had some time to think about it, have you learned anything with your dingy choice? What type of motor do you have for it. It looks fairly light.I hope your winter plans worked well, happy belated birthday.

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Ken, thanks a lot :)
      About our Walker Bay - you need to find a way to stop it from scratching your paint. So this year we bought bow fenders to stick on our rudders. We also have a rope around her to soften any bumps. She is light (40kg), but hoisting her up on board is a longish process, as we need to use the spinnaker pole and halyard.
      The rowing position is a little awkward if you have someone on board and especially if you want to use the engine. We use a 2.5horse power 4 stroke Yamaha engine, but it's a little heavy for this dinghy.
      The winter plans worked perfect, thank you :)

      @kendorsey4320 6 лет назад

      Would a saltwater compatible electric motor be an option? I have no idea on reliability or what strain it would put on your generating capacity if you had to charge a power source from your boat but I've been curious if it would even be practical for a means to get to shore and back. I'm thinking someone out there must have thought this through.

    Nice deal for haulout and winter on terra ferma for Kittiwake.
    Where in Italy is it warm in December or January?
    With Your two-cabin layout and the cockpit inbetween it's a bit of a challenge to warm the whole boat.
    Did You look into Refleks? They have very reliable Diesel burners in a variety of sizes, and You might think about having one with water-heating device (basicly a copper spiral and a tiny pump added) and bring warmth to the other end of Kittiwake "central heating"-style.
    After trying I do not recomend woodburners on small boats - too much hassle with hot, dusty garbage and a logistic pain in the backside when anchoring out: wood's supposed to be dry to burn halfways clean, so You share your cabin with your wood-fuel ....
    I had an RV with stock waterheated parts (bathroom and bed) back in 2002 and changed to a Refleks after getting rid of the service-nightmare of its propane burner - best and easiest thing I could do to survive a Ionian winter in it. Works well with tax reduced "red" diesel qualities, and on up to 40 % sansa I got for free. Refleks disapproved, though.

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  6 лет назад +2

      Oh it’s Manfred! 😮😀😊
      Nah, it was freezing cold, but Elena’s parents’ home was warm and comfy 😉
      You’re right about why the heater is difficult. We looked into some with 2 outlets but they need a fan to distribute the heat. We’d love a wood burning stove but it’s just not practical in a small weight-sensitive boat.
      Maybe the central heating system would be a goer.

    • @manfredschmalbach9023
      @manfredschmalbach9023 6 лет назад

      When using a fan instead of waterbased warmth transfer I'd try computer brushless fans - dirt cheap, really quiet and pretty economic, energywise, in relation to the moved volume; computer nerds are pretty stiff when it comes to permanent, disturbing sounds. I use two mid range three wire 12 V ones with potentiometers to control (draft-free) air extraction in the van while sleeping.
      Waterbased warmth transport does have the advantage of much less lost "content", while blowing warm air openly around disperses more than transporting it.
      IKEA kids tunnels or anything compareable can help direct the warm air when You put the fan in those, and these collapse back to "2d" when not used.
      Car water heaters (additional heaters off VW tdi busses for example) from Eberspächer or Webasto do suck way to much power for a sailboat, as well as airheaters from those suppliers generally do I'm afraid - so, an open flame in an otherwise nonelectric heating device of some kind would be the path to find - with small water circulation pumps as economic addition, probably.
      That's what brought me to Refleks. I also experimented with outside exhaust gas-heaters for sheds and selfmade drip oil burners from propangastanks, with or without a fan in the chimney, with or without copper spirals for warm water. Nothing was as uncomplicated and reliable as a Refleks, they are an investment for sure, though. I even think about putting one in the swb van I'm currently using - secondary air car heaters are not only power sinkholes but way too noisy when sleeping. And aboard You would have the additional problems with their configuration of downside montage, air- and exhaustwise ... as aluminium cast chunks they do particularly not like salt, either.
      Cheers! 🖐

    Great video as always! Thanks. Can you tell me how much wattage your total solar panels create. I'm planning to start to cover the same route as you have done next year year so I'm wondering how much power you use to live on board.
    (SV Esfani ) ;-)

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Andy, we've got a total of 560 watts, but they're flexible so I think you'd get a bit more efficiency from solid ones if that's what you're planning on using. With solar it's a good idea to have a decent battery bank - especially if you'll be night sailing with an autopilot.

    • @andypennybrown6848
      @andypennybrown6848 6 лет назад +2

      Sailing Kittiwake many thanks for the information, that was helpful. The battery bank (3) currently has a capacity of 240 amp hours but plan to add another one to bring it over 300 I've changed the lights to led. I have also bought and fitted a Chinese diesel warm air heater £179:00 direct from China 2 kw working well on board over the winter in -6 degrees weather conditions here in the uk total fit cost £300 that included 3 outlets and pipework. Wishing you both fair winds !

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  6 лет назад

      Hi Andy, that's really interesting about the diesel heater. What sort of electricity draw has it got? And what sort of consumption of fuel when it's 0-5 degrees C outside? Would there be a way we could have one outlet in the main cabin and one in the bedroom do you think?

    Hi guys nice video, we are sailing from noirmontier France early may, just a little one, have you come across any fishing floats/nets as the pilot book says there are lots going down the west coast. We set of from Scotland late last year. Have fun thanks Neal Tricia S Y FALCON

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  6 лет назад

      Hi Dylan, being UK sailors we're always on the look out for fishing / crab pot markers. There didn't seem to be more than we found around the UK coast. If you're in deep water they're generally not a problem (although we've seen them in 50m depth) and if you're close in then you'll be on deck usually anyway. We do keep an extra close eye out if the motor's on and we're lucky in that we can reach our prop from inside the boat so maybe we're more relaxed than most :)
