Hey Chris, I wanted to give you an update on the NIKE base in Swedesboro N.J. The property was sold and the base is going to be torn down and some garbage is going to be built on the property. Thanks for doing that video as it looks like I will never get to visit the place now.

My father's best buddy still has an old coal oven and a pile of coke in the cellar. I think they stopped delivering coal and coke in the early nineties here. If he wants to heat his house, he just throws in a couple pieces of coal and one piece of coke (roughly the size of a bigger household soap bar). If he throws in more than one the iron oven door will start glowing white from the heat. 😅

Very interesting! My dad worked for Koppers Coke when I was a kid and we actually heated the house with coke. It burned hotter than coal and you had to use less of it to prevent damage to your furnace. Customers had to be warned about warping the grates from the excess heat.

With true journalistic expertise Chris shows us a Pennsylvania we never knew existed, though I spent the first 25 years of life there. Recondite and a veritable savant! Currently I live within a few miles of Indiana's largest coke oven in East Chicago, that supplies the 5 massive steel mills of the region. Blasting massive clouds of soot skyward...
