    You've really outdone yourself with this one, Chris. Funny, but you anticipated a thought, for just as I was wondering if it smelled (musty, etc.) on the ship, you were going down a flight of stairs and commented on how it smelled. I can only imagine that the unused portions of the ship are quite musty. Thank you, Chris. All three of the Queen Mary videos are treasures!

    Surprised the ship looks as good as it does. Had a prom there and stayed a couple of times over the years, and the cost of upkeep and rehab are taking their toll. The Spruce Goose was relocated but hopefully the City will eventually figure out a way to make it work.

    This wreck needs to be scraped! It is a real shame they are spending public money for this piece of rust

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian 9 месяцев назад

      They are not spending public money on the ship. In the 56 years the ship has been in Long Beach, they only used $1 million on the ship, and that was to help pay a contract for security guards. Otherwise all money spent on the ship comes from a fund set up from the sale of Long Beach's oil fracking operation. No taxpayer money has been used for the restoration. Furthermore, the ship generates a profit, and all the repairs in the last year have been funded by the ship's profits. So if it pays for itself and its not a financial burden to the public, I say, the ship can stay, especially since it's still beloved by countless people who visit every year. 2.5 million per year, in fact.

    In the mid 80's when I was 10-12 years old we went on vacation to California. One stop was the queen Mary as well as the spruce goose next door in the dome. The one thing that I will never forget was that part you showed where you can see the propeller under the water. I freaked out. Ran as fast as I could to get out of there. Even watching this video now freaked me out lol. Don't recognize anything else from the video but I love the art deco style of the ship. The emptiness of the ship creeps me out though.

      It was actually a gate installed by the hotel in the 1970s to prevent day visitors from wandering into the hotel area and disturbing hotel guests. That whole area was Second Class back in the day, so there would have been no gate.

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@cplcabs while this person was incorrect about this gate, RMS Queen Mary actually DID have gates separating the classes in the corridors on B Deck. They were wooden gates that went floor to ceiling, and they were movable, to allow more flexibility of use with the B Deck cabins. They hooked into the bulkheads using bronze notches. And the gate was often manned by a steward to permit first class passengers free roam of the deck.

  • @eily_b
    @eily_b 9 месяцев назад

    Ok, so they need 5 million a year to keept the boat maintained. Previous owners neglected that and that's why it looks run down like that now. Long Beach took ownership back and is restoring the vessel step by step but they do not use public money for that, they have some kind of a fee ships need to pay when they stay there. They have one dock that brings in 2,5 mill and are building another one so they can secure the costs. The front of the ship is closed due to rotten planks. But they are working on it. Lots of work has already done like lighing up the first class poor or removing tacky gazebos or ugly build in's that were made over the time. Around 17:50 you were in a section where at some point they put white wallpaper over the wood paneling. And some parts of the deck were covered with plywood where they need to put hardwood floors again. Etc, etc, lots of stories about the Queen Mary.
