  • Should you learn two languages at the same time? I’m gonna share some of my thoughts and experiences. Hi guys and welcome back to the channel! My name’s Connor and I make videos about everything involving travel and languages. Today, I wanted to talk about a question that comes up fairly frequently in the language learning world. That is, can you learn two languages at the same time? And if you can, then should you? Let’s explore!
Assuming you’re someone who’d like to learn 2+ foreign languages, which describes most people voluntarily learning a language, then it makes sense why you’d want to study two languages at the same time--since it’d conceivably be faster to do so. On one hand, learning two languages simultaneously can be a quicker way to reach an intermediate level in both of them--even if concentrating on one at a time will be faster overall.
And while intuition may lead you to believe that learning a 2nd and 3rd language at the same time could hinder your progress, this might not actually be true--provided you have enough time to dedicate to each. Researchers in China compared a group of college students studying English with another group studying both English and Russian. Their results found no significant differences between the English abilities of either group, but did indicate a higher working memory capacity in the group that studied two languages.
On the other hand, you’re likely to experience one or more drawbacks if you decide to learn two languages at once. First, learning one language, let alone two, requires a huge time commitment. Since most people are not college language students, it can be difficult to find the time to set aside for learning two languages. This could lead to an inconsistent study schedule, a lack of motivation, or burnout. Furthermore, if you’re learning two closely related languages, like Spanish and Portuguese, then you’ll almost certainly mix them up at one point of another.
That said can, learning two languages at a time is something that can be done. If you’re committed to studying two languages at the same time, I’ve found it best to use this method. After you decide which two languages you want to learn, pick the one you’re most excited about and start studying it. Then, commit to that language until you reach at least a low-intermediate level. In other words once you’ve graduated past introductory workbooks, can work your way through a basic conversation, and can understand what you read and hear. Once you’ve gotten to this point, then add the second language into your routine. Staggering the start times of languages, so that you’re only a beginner in one language at a time, can be really beneficial in the long run. Ultimately, if you’re just learning a language for fun, then I think it’s most important to focus on whatever makes you happiest and gives you the most enjoyment.

Great video, I’m now learning Arabic whilst ‘learning’ Spanish but probably just enough to maintain it. It’s definitely possible the problem is often organisation and cognitive load- letting your thought process be clogged up by what to listen to and do in each language specially when your bespoke study time is limited and most of your learning has to be in dead time

That's an interesting combination! I'd be curious to hear if you've encountered any unexpected similarities between Arabic and Spanish. Maybe that could be a future video 😂

Connor Gleason - Travel & Languages I’ve always known about the Arabic los words in Spanish so not unexpected as such but it’s nice to see them and yes quite possibly a future video! Sadly (for me learning Arabic and I guess historically) a lot of these Arabic words were, as far as I know deliberately expunged from the dialects spoken in the peninsula

I was learning three languages this summer during lockdown because I had a lot of time. I was having lots of Italki lessons, doing Duolingo, making RUclips vids etc. When I returned to work in July, I stopped making progress so decided to just concentrate on one of them (Mandarin), and I started to make great progress. By the way, the languages were Mandarin, Kurish (Sorani) and Polish. I'm now back learning Kurdish as I'm on lockdown again and this time just spending my time concentrating on Kurdish (mainly!!) I am still trying to maintain the others by looking over material I've already learned.

Wow, I don't think I've ever managed to take on three languages at a
time before. And those are not the easiest languages either!

@@connorgioiafigliu Not easy languages, but at least all different to each other. I like what you said about not learning similar languages. I still get confused between Italian and Spanish, even though I've never studied them together, I think it would be a big headache!

I totally agree with staggering your languages. I started studying Arabic (from 0) while studying French (high beginner). That in and of itself was hard enough; I can't imagine how it would have been if I had started both languages from nothing!

Great video! I'm from Switzerland (the German speaking part) and we had to learn English and French at school, so I'm used to learning two languages at the same time. It was a bit easier back then because we had a fixed schedule😅

    Excellent video, Connor!
Although I like your method, I am not sure of what to do. I am 14 and I'm Portuguese, so, I am studying English and French on school. But I have always loved Italian, and that's why I use Duolingo for Italian (and also French). I don't wanna stop learning Italian, but French seems to be more important, and it can help me on school.
Do you have any pieces of advice for me?

    • @connorgioiafigliu
      @connorgioiafigliu  3 года назад +2

Hi David, thanks for commenting! Here's how I see things: English and French are school subjects, just like math or science. Learning Italian is a hobby (although a worthwhile one), like playing video games or playing sports. I don't think learning Italian will confuse you in English or French. But if studying Italian means taking time away from the studying you need to do for school, then I think you need to hold off.
In other words, ask yourself this: Do I have enough time to spend an extra 15-30 minutes a day on a hobby? If the answer is yes, then I'd say go ahead and use that time to learn Italian. If the answer is no, then ask yourself: Is there is something unnecessary (like watching TV) that I can do for 15-30 minutes less each day? If the answer is still no, then maybe you should wait to study Italian until when you have time off from school.
Remember, there is nothing wrong with taking breaks from language learning or putting it off completely until you have enough time to do it. I didn't start learning Italian until I was almost 17, so no matter what you do, you're ahead of me!
