I used to be involved with the California Vaquero Horse (CVH) registry until I realized that it is less of a preservation effort and more of an attempt to establish a boutique "purebred old Iberian" breed for an exclusive market anticipated to be lucrative; the CVH is based on BLM mustangs of a certain "type" from the Sulphur Springs HMA. With confirmation bias, the CVH Association uses phenotype and mitochondrial DNA results to accept/reject BLM mustangs (thus establishing "type") and interprets historical events as "proof" these horses came from early California. The fact is, nobody knows where the line-backed horses of Utah came from and their connection to early California is pure conjecture. None the less, you can find them gathered every few years from the Sulphur Springs HMA and available for adoption from the BLM for a fee of $125.
