"Trickin Pickin" performed by Doug Waterman
As a Formal union carpenter and union steel worker I enjoy! I worked in metal fabrication for Reynolds and Alcoa. I'm disabled in my old age but loving the way you live! GOD BLESS!
Talking decades ago, I was always amazed at how quickly critters grabbed onto my hull.
I didn’t have a large boat, 28’, and it was never in the water for more than a couple of weeks at a time, preferring to live on its trailer where I would coddle and fuss over it constantly.
However hull maintenance was always in the back of my mind. Back in the 70s and 80s anti fouling for small craft wasn’t very good at all. And come to think about it, for some reason there wasn’t much interest exhibited by those I would take fishing and diving when ticame to hull cleaning, go figure… anyway, love watching everything you and the crew tackle.
I’m envious to say the least, and I’m so impressed by your perseverance and talent! Hopefully I’ll be able to at least see Seeker someday!
As long as dolphins are around, you’re all good!
I had seen two yesterday, with caudal fins bitten partially or fully off.
I love love love LOVE the dragons on your boat!!! aaaa! never get rid of them.
Was having a crappy Monday, but coming home to a new Seeker video brightened things a bit. Thanks Doug.
just binge watched all ur progres since moving the boat to the dock from your front lawn, really enjoy the dedication. cleaning the haul seems very satisfying but i don't have the balls to get in the ocean, lol.
Baby steps mi amigo. :)
Blue Angels - Must be Tuesday again, Doug is cleaning the boat 😁
Blade tip cavitation is the enemy of any coating on a propeller.
Exactly what I was thinking. It has to be cavitation taking off the coating, but the blades were still really smooth, so it isn’t horrible. Still a problem though.
Which is why we all need to change our propellers for the helix wing type no cavitation and twice the torque at the tips
I wonder if it has something to do with the design and having the clearance space between the prop and the shroud creating a low pressure vortex between the two surfaces?
Great video! I lived in Pensacola for a while and remember how clean the water is there. Here in Texas the flow of the Mississippi River gives us a lot less clarity most of the time. We do get our green to the beach occasionally, but mostly murky. Talking about sharks. Back in the 80's I was surf fishing on Surfside Beach near Galveston and was out on the third sandbar casting into the fourth gut for Speckled Trout. The water on the bar was only waist high and I was having a blast! I looked up and about 100 yards South of me a very large shark (10'-12') busted the top chasing bait. I thought that was awesome and thought no more of it until he busted the water 20 ft in front of me, heading straight toward me. I backpedaled hard as I realized the water between the 2nd and 3rd sandbar was overhead and I had swum out to the bar. The shark turned away before the sandbar and as I contemplated having to swim back to safety, I kept looking around nervously for that big predator. My heartbeat calmed when he busted the top again 100 yards to the North and I went on back to the 2nd bar. One of many great memories on the Gulf Coast! Keep on keeping on, Doug.
This made me curious to know if there is a "Hull Cleaning Drone" and if not....maybe there should be! I'm reminded of the pool cleaning "drone" my Grandpa used 20 years ago.
There are for large ships, and you have to use the specific paint that the drone is designed for.
Just saw your coolest thing I ever made video and had to check it out totally awesome man
That guitar at the end is so awesome I can listen to it over and over
Smashing work. Thanks!!
Dolphin for sure 😂
You're the man, Doug
Awesome!! Plastic scraper works ok, I have found that a heavy plastic bladed ice scraper works great and can survive the barnacles without tearing up the bottom coating. Something to consider. MrEric
Great video. Marlin Paints Metal Primer has been re-released with greater adhesion and resistance to currents. If you want to take no chances you can use a thin layer of a zinc chromate 2-part etch primer before you put on the metal primer. Once the etch primer is on you have between 30 minutes and 5 hours to get on the metal primer. Oh, and Velox Plus works on film thickness, so if you can, 3 coats is the way to go 🎉
Cool, thanks
PPG ABC 3 is all I use . Great stuff 👍 try prop speed on your prop . Another great product .
keep the videos coming Doug, good to know the waves, sharks, and wind haven't got the better of ya and Seeker.... makes me feel better about trying to hang in there too
we alll have our little tests in life, just glad I'm not alone.... thanks for the video!
Well done sir 💪
Several people in my YC and I use cold galvanize on our props. You can get it at most hardware stores. I get the large spray can when it’s on sale. It lasts 3-4 mo before anything really grows on it. P.S. keep my boat in CT, Long Island sound.
Really! Not hear of that one. Might have to give it a try. Seems like it would be an anode for the prop.
A good fingernail substitute is the laminate countertop samples from a big box store.
Great video! Thanks!!! This brings up a question, How did the “old” sailing ships used to deal with this problem, or how do large cruise ships deal with this problem? You see those large cruise ships, they can’t send somebody over the side … do they?
Yes, you pay commercial divers to clean the hull of any vessel in between dry dock periods. More growth = lower profit.
Man I hated scraping the bottom of my dads pontoon every year, we’d have a thousand sheepshead swimming around us and then the sharks would come..never had a problem with them luckily, we hauled out and finally put quality bottom paint on and got two years out of it per cleaning, it’s amazing to see how much growth you had on there already, I imagine when we are gone, nature will just bury all evidence of us being here within a few decades lol!
I can say that I used that exact anti fouling on a model boat. Had a buddy that worked for a company that owned a few ships so he got me some so my model would be authentic lol
Another vote for Propspeed here Doug, I am in sub tropical Queensland Australia and we get heavy barnacle fouling here in no time. Propspeed is good for a couple of years at least with no fouling.
Have you looked at using Prop-speed on the propeller instead of antifoul?
I have and I love it 👍
There really is nothing better.
I've been aware of electronic shark repellent for some time. Some have the ability form electrical field around you by 20'.
Instead of using a scraper try using a pressure washer with the rotating nozzle under water. It's less invasive.👍👍
There is great product I’ve used on the propeller of my my boat. It is called Prop Speed, an amazing protective prop coating, barnacles just can’t get a grip on it.
I'll try it someday when I have more pennies in the bank. : )
Any plans to head to the east coast of FL? I'm in West Palm Beach, and would love to see the boat sometime.
If worried about sharks try doing hull cleaning when the water is less turbid. Many shark attacks are a case of mistaken identity and occur in low visibility waters. Also, you can see what's around you better in clear waters. Dawn and dusk are prime feeding times.
maybe cavitation pulling that bit off the blade? ....... as always thanks for the content
Can you apply liquid tar to the bare spots on the haul? A smear of grease? Surely something with some viscosity could be put on the spots.
If an electrical charge
Or static was applied to the haul; would that keep the growth away? Illuminate the haul with UV light like they use on pond filters to deal with algae?
Hi Captain Doug, great video again.
I remember you mentioning that Seeker is designed to stand on her keels at low tide and you can do maintenance before the high tide returns.
Is that still something you consider doing, or are you concerned about her center of gravity?
He can still do that. There's not a convenient place to do that right now. That why he replaced the shaft seal and pulled the prop while in the water recently.
You should try Propspeed on the blades Doug. Seen some good things about it nothing grows on it and seems to stick well. She's still looking good Doug
Propspeed was my 1st choice till I saw the price. : )
I was told lanolin grease is an effective antifoul. It could easily be applied underwater. I haven't tried it myself yet to to be able to confirm that. Regards Doug from New Zealand.
Yeah, I got some now. I'll give it a try at some point.
From the thumbnail, I thought Doug was somehow getting the fish to do the cleaning job! Perhaps you really could spread some kind of sticky fish paste over the barnacles and hull slime. That would make it tasty for other sea creatures to nibble. Job done!
Peanut Butter the 100% eco friendly anti-fouling.
@@SVSeeker Doug, that's your first research project sorted then!
Gosh... you would think by now there would be some type of plastic coating that could withstand the sea and daily usage for the prop blades. Plastics generally last like freakin' forever so they tell us. Maybe one day you'll determine you want to pull her out of the waters and redo her bottoms so she's protected? Where the coatings haven't been damaged, they clearly are doing a good job.
Shark skin nano riblet surface coating. They just haven't figured out a way to mass produce it yet. Inspired by the texture of shark skin, the specific shape of the ridges mechanically prevent all sea organisms from attaching themselves to it while simultaneously creating less drag. Also, technically since it is a mechanical nano coating, you could make it out of anything. The only thing that matters is the shape / nano texture of it.
@@DFMurray I'm going to have to look that stuff up - sounds very interesting!
For the prop I'd highly recomend Propspeed, longest lasting and best results I've observed. No affiliation, just what my friends with boats including some i've sailed on seem to have settled on as the best bang for buck (despite It's not insubstantial price)
Problem with propspeed is the silicon membrane will be destroyed if it touches the bottom...
8:57 Funny you said that I was feeding fish with a can of tuna and there were hundreds of little fish and instantly they all disappeared as I set there wondering what happened a huge barracuda ripped through a few feet away left me wondering what happened
Have you considered copper plating the prop???
Keep up the good work, you are a diamond sir!!’
Looking forward to more videos, best regards from across the pond.!!!’ ຈل͜ຈ
.
Would waiting 24 hours between coats make a difference? In the Navy we were fighting corrosion constantly and used some wicked epoxy primer sans ppe. Maybe airbrushing would stick better.
How's the water maker system working?
Easier said than done, but don’t worry about the shark if there’s no way to avoid the possibility of a shark.
Having marine mammals around is a good sign that you’re safe from large sharks, too.
A friend of mine plasma sprayed zinc on some parts immersed in sea water for a different reason. There was no marine growth on them after several months in the water. Would that on your propeller? Just something to research.
Is there an antifouling paint you can put on underwater?
Interesting video. On a different subject, what are your plans for the upcoming hurricane season? As you are probably aware, there is a storm in the atlantic that might swing into the gulf. Are you planning on riding out at anchor, double up on anchors etc? I would hate to see the seeker end up like the pictures of other boats piled up like cordwood in Florida after the last storm hit.
I got your email too. Do you have a boat in the Gulf?
@@SVSeeker no I do not Always hopeful someday. In the past I owned an O Day 322 sailboat. I had it on the tenn river Miss sailing alot
@@user-gx9zm4bm6g That sounds like a great boat for the Alabama and Florida coast. And as a boat owner, I think you can imagine the number and frequency of conversations regarding hurricanes along this coast. The bottom line is don't get caught in one, and the plan is dependent on where you are and where the hurricane is forecasted to go. So like thousands of other boat owners along this coast, making that plan at the appropriate time is the plan.
Nothing beats red lead aka copper paint back in the day it came in 45 gallon drums here in Western Canada I still remember the smell of the stuff when I was a kid. What you are doing is pretty much all you can do is go under and give the hull a scrape and don't let the growth build up for too long. Growing up on the West Coast of British Columbia scraping boat bottoms was a part of life as a teenager 😂Dad screaming don't be scared of that sh*t its not going to kill you scraping barges with a scraper on a long pole.
01:36 - that coatings expert will very happy to hear you not refer to them as paint XD
: )
Make a magnetic hull cleaner..... start with a pressure washer surface cleaning head, add 4 wheels around the sides with really strong embedded magnets in the wheels. Attach the whole thing to a long pole and connect a pressure washer on deck. You might be able to clean at least part of the hull from the deck by pushing it up and down the sides of the hull.
Silly question, could that growth be removed with a pressure washer instead of a scraper? You could tie yourself to the boat or wear magnet shoes on your feet to keep from jetting around.
Just what I was thinking
Enjoyable video Doug
Stick with the plastic scraper; it's far quicker especially if you are worried about sharks: So glad I do most of my diving in the UK especially when pottering under boats!!
Is there a specific rotation that boats should be dry-docked and anti-fouling re-applied? I know you said that stuff lasts 10 years, but I'm wondering if there is sort of a general guideline for maintenance of that nature.
No, not really. It has a lot more to do with other maintenance that also requires a haul out. The cost of the haul out, and the balance in your back account.
Have you ever tried a hydrophobic antifouling (such as Gentoo) as opposed to a hydrophilic antifouling (PPG ABC3)?
Could you, theoretically, electroplate the prop blades with copper? Would it do any good? You've got all the saltwater and electricity you need.
What about electroplating the exposed areas with copper
I find it interesting that copper alone inhibits marine growth, but seemingly does nothing as a component of bronze. I wonder if it would be possible, through electroplating or vacuum deposition or similar process, to coat the prop blades in an extremely thin pure copper layer to stop the critters from setting up shop there.
Oh, speaking of showers and onboard water, hows that ROWPU doing? I recall that you could not run it on fresh water and had to run it on salt water as a feed source. Is it working ok?
Have not even tried it yet. Currently my tanks are full of rainwater.
Would it be possible to coper plate the propeller blade with coper ? That would be a bit more work but could be a more durable antifouling solution.
Don't think so. It's NiBrAl or Nickel Aluminum Bronze which is about 79% copper.
Wow
Can you run a pressure washer underwater?
Look out, Shark! I'm so afraid of them too.
Did you get caught in that big storm?
Why are you farting around in the Gulf of Mexico, when there is a Submersible missing at the Titanic wreck site? Go Rescue them with SV Seeker and become World Famous!!!
Yep! Dolphin,,,,
Well, looks like fishes had a treat.
Hope all is well after the nasty weather we have been getting lately. Would love to see some footage from your viewpoint if you get a banger one night.
Had no Idea that much Grows on Bottom of Boats in such a Short time! Is there a difference between Metal and Wooden boats? Do they attract the same growth ?
Prop speed is what you need for the props
I watch a video of someone using a pressure washer with a turbo tip under water 😊 could be good defensive for sharks also 😅😊
You forgot to mention we applied the PPG ABC 3 in the middle of a gang running gun fight :)
Just another day in the hood.
👍👊
Do you have any insight on the sub that is lost in Newfoundland right now.
None at all. But if I got to choose a way out a submarine would be much better than a nursing home bed.
@@SVSeeker thanks for the responding, no nursing home for me.
I wonder what would happen if someone use’s never wet
🤠👍
Big question is "What's for Dinner" ? Chicken would be a good answer!!!
Yes dolphin . Definitely Dolphin 🐬
steel brush or plastic mallet tap will kill the barnacles ,same as using plyers to crush them big ones the fish will do the rest :D
Five Years is the normal life expectancy for the system you have applied check with your paint rep.
You see any sharks down there?
I’m pretty sure it’s cavitation that is causing the coating to wear off on the props. Going to take a smarter guy than me to figure out how to prevent that
Hey Doug, I have a few friends that have been using propspeed and they say it’s a really great product but expensive.
Blacktip reef sharks dont worry me as much as hammers or tigers
quite a tedious task to scrape her clean, i might say. May visits to freshwater (rivers, etc) help with the growth? AFAIK they do not withstand it.
Don't watch that episode of monster's inside me when the dude gets a barnacle in his bloodstream via a cut. 😬
Never run afoul of your anemenies! Sorry, someone had to do it,
Have you considered having/ making a chain mail suit to have on board. I know it would be something that you would not want to use normally but if caught in a bind where sharks were know to be present and maintaince couldn't be avoided it might be nice to have on hand. Also I don't know what ever came of it but about 15 years ago someone was experimenting with a vest/suit that emitted a magnetic field as shark repellent. If I remember correctly I think even the Mythbusters caught wind of it and tried it out... what litte video was shown the sharks wanted nothing to do with it. But we all know how video can be edited though its still an interesting thought 🤔. Thanks for the neat video.
propspeed is by far the best product, nothing adheres
Man, I hate hull cleaning. It's one thing I am happy to just pay for.
if there are dolphins around, the sharks likely are not.....
That boat needs to come out of the water and a new system put on it. for the time spent in that water and the fact it is made of steel, I think this system is just don't doing a good job.
I'd park it in 8 foot water and get a pressure washer to blast off the gook. get weight belts to hold you down. may be able to do it from a dock. if you do it a lot, it may be worth the $
Doug do you ever think about the video game from days gone by called feeding frenzy. 🐬🦈🐬🦈🦭🦈🐟🐟
