For a man of his age to pass on shortly after the love of his life passes is not uncommon. There are statistics to support that men can't live without their woman. If it was the other way around she could still have 20 years left, but the man rarely does.
This whole album is a beautiful farewell from a flawed man who tried his best all his life to be as good as he could be.

This song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written about drugs & depression. But Johnny Cash's version is considered the best. His version is more about regret for past mistakes in life & realizing material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.

Just wanted to add for people perhaps unfamiliar with Cash's story, but he dealt with addiction as well. For me, Nine Inch Nails' version is about a guy either in the throes of an addiction or just after kicking it, reflecting on what he's going through. Cash's version is someone who cleared their addiction long ago, but is looking back on his life and realizing how much of his life was changed by his vices, and a deep sadness in retrospect. We hear Cash's desperation to change it all, and we hear the sorrow in his voice knowing he can't.

This was his swan song. His wife June passed shortly after this was filmed and he passed several months later. As he says, in the end the friends are going away (passing) and his empire means nothing, its dirt. Rich man, poor man matters not. We exist between the two infinities and when we leave we all have exactly what we entered with, ourselves. It is only our connections with others that will exist on. He did make this song his own.

That was the last time he played his piano. The video was shot at their home. June was not supposed to be in the video. But she had come down the stairs to make sure Johnny wasn't working too hard. The director kept the shot in. You can see the genuine concern on her face.

The first time I heard this the line that hit me the most was "Everyone one I've known goes away in the end". I have not had a close friend for over 40 years. The song hits home where we live, especially for those who have more years behind them than in front of them. The next thing to hit me was 'What have I become?' If we see that whatever hopes and aims and dreams we had for our future when we were young compared to where we actually ended up, it is a grief for many. The end of life can bring a reflection of how far away from having a worthwhile life it might have become. I see 'empire of dirt' as both that everything we achieve materially, plus any wealth, fame and success comes to nothing in the end and the only value in life is finding our relationship with Christ and with each other. Being a blessing to others is the only value there is in this life; everything else is flapdoodle.

Trent Reznor, the lead singer & songwriter of NIN (Nine Inch Nails) originally wrote this while he was spiraling out of control from drug addiction and severe depression.
Rick Rubin, a brilliant producer IMO, helped Johnny Cash revitalize his career because Johnny had a serious drought for about two decades - and he asked Johnny the crazy question if he would attempt to do a cover of this song.
Cash was adamant at first - and Trent Reznor really didn't feel an artist like Johnny Cash should be doing a cover of one of his songs.
But lo and behold, the stars aligned on this one.
When Reznor first heard about Johnny Cash doing the cover, he wasn't overly thrilled - *until* he saw the video.
That's when he said "this is no longer my song, this is Johnny Cash's song"
And this was Johnny's swan song. His wife passed about 4 months after its release and he didn't make it long after her.
And they really couldn't determine the actual cause of death of Johnny Cash (even though he was pretty beat up and broken after years of living a pretty rough life) - but I'd like to think he simply died of a broken heart because his partner was no longer with him. People will laugh, but it's actually a medical term - "stress cardiomyopathy" is dying of a broken heart 💔
If you truly enjoyed this, you should really consider reacting to "The Man Comes Around".
It'll make the hairs on your arms to stand up (to take an actual verse from the song 😅). I think it's debatable but it might have been the last song Johnny Cash ever wrote.

I have watched maybe 20 reviews of this, and at the end of the video, the reviewer(s) usually don't say anything for a few seconds, or say very little. The first time I saw it, I just cried. I'm 73, so I know a lot about of Johnny's music and life, which makes this hit me harder. Even now, my eyes are teary. Miss you, Johnny.

A very sad song, not an original but a cover of Trent Reznor’s composition for Nine inch Nails. He made it his own really - it was his Swan song.
One of my favourite other RUclipsrs The Fairy Voice Mother (aka Lolli Wren) has done a cover of the same song in her own style - it’s a sonic masterpiece! She really did make it her own, so much emotion 😢

Hey Swift, not sure if it's a good idea to post this below the 'Hurt' video. But it fits in a way (see at the end).
Wanted to suggest a kind of special artist. He's somewhat unknown although he has about 900K subscribers, 1000+ songs and 37M views on his channel. He's special because he's a 70 years old man from the UK. He plays great own songs and covers. His music is nothing particularly crazy. It is simply beautiful, heartfelt and mostly sad. It's just him sitting in his living room, playing and singing when his wife is at work. Love it.
One of his great covers is 'Snuff' by 'Slipknot' (ruclips.net/video/_mZzVjAFg4o/видео.html). And here the circle to 'Hurt' closes: The cover to me sounds a bit like Johnny Cash. I'd be happy if you'd have a look at Frank. ❤

Thanks for the very good reaction. Looking back at Cash’s life, there can be no doubt, through many of he and his wife’s specials and songs, that he was a strong believer in the reality of Christianity. The saying that “Only one life, it will soon be passed, only what’s done for Christ will last.“ We are not just some kind of star dust, banging in a universe that doesn’t have us in mind. All of actual science screams of the reality of God. God who authored the Bible, which many of Johnny Cash‘s songs were based on. Of course this song was not his originally but has an a since become his, and his greatest anguish is shown as Christ is being nailed to the cross, paying for his sins and the sins of all who would repent and believe on his name. If the Darwinian evolution fantasy had truth to it, which honest scientists are Leaving that mess in droves these last decades, then there would be absolutely no way to argue that anything was right or wrong. Just wanted to emphasize something that typically gets left out of the conversation regarding Cash’s version.
    Thanks again

I tear up every time I watch the video. Grew up in America listening to Johnny Cash and other Outlaw Country singers, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson of the 70s. Their music had a edge of rebellion coupled with FREEDOM and the desire for a loving woman and all that comes with having one. Johnny Cash was special in the way he never forgot the poor and down trodden, I guess because that's where he came from. In a way he became a conscience and soul of America through his music. Even if you don't react to them, find and listen to "Further On Up The Road" from this same album and "Sunday Mornin' Coming Down" Both will never leave your soul.
