We have a fireplace that is slightly larger than yours. It too did not draw well. We had a fire expert in who advised us to buy a grate that was elevated off the floor of the fireplace to get it closer to the chimney. Ours sits about 10” above the floor. It helped tremendously with the draw. We also installed fans atop the chimney to combat the extreme winds off the ocean that we fight with in the winter.
Love every episode Julie. You and your husband are naturals in front of the camera. Your genuine humor and personality shine through. Continued Blessings and Support. ~Love&Light♥️Carli
I love how Luke and Julie interact with each other, so much fun seeing just how much work goes into keeping Mapperton running. I can't wait to visit one day. Sending love from Berkshire 🖤
These are my favorite videos! Watching the two of you interact with each other, seeing Julie attempt any and everything that’s put before her, and seeing things that are done around Mapperton. It just makes for an awesome video and makes me want more! Thank you! 🌸🌸
Hi Julie, Fi here! We used to make our own 'Fire Starters' by rolling the newspaper from one corner loosely, then kinda tying them in a knot and we'd make a bucketful ready for lighting the open fire every morning! I was doing them from the age of 5 and I'm nearly 61 now, it was great fun too! It's sad that we don't have open fires anymore, we were told we couldn't have them because of the fumes (smoke) etc wasn't good anymore, so its nice to see an open fire these days! We had a black hearth (The old ones had an oven and a place to hang the kettle) it needed polishing every week, not a job I liked doing. Ours was taken out and replaced by a gas fire in the 70's... :0( One day, I hope my daughter gets married at a place like Mapperton, it is outstandingly beautiful though I've never been myself yet, that's my dream for her lol, but she's 38 now, if she doesn't hurry up, I'll miss such an occasion lol lol The light-bulbs that you use, are how they used to be. and the best bulbs to have, they could and often did last years, unlike today's energy ones that don't last that long so have to be renewed every so often! Oh my, 'Julie with a sledge hammer', quick Luke runnnnnn lol, clear the area, that was so good Julie to see you stick it out, but ever so funny :0) lol
Really? I always wonder why they are still married. She seems soooo “over” him. The constant snarking is annoying from her. It’s not silly at all. I’ve watched a few videos and I’m done.
@@sammom8599 I’m very sorry to say I feel the same vibe. There seems to be underlying tension when they are onscreen together. It makes me slightly uncomfortable but I watch anyway because I love to see their projects and their home which they’ve so kindly shared.
They're very well matched. There isnt any tension between them...she is just a high energy person with a quick moving thought process. He's laid back in his delivery and it counters her energy level. They wouldn't have made it for over 20 yrs if the presumed angst was there. At first it appears that way but she is the same persona in solo videos...perhaps a bit nervous in front of a camera. Better than the two of them being the same in their delivery...those adds spark and keeps the relationship moving forward. Plus they have an ENORMOUS responsibility in keeping that property in tip top shape. Julie is doing a great job showing how as an outsider she had rolled up her sleeves and gotten to work. They're fine!
What a joy to watch this. Pure entertainment with a little bit of instruction thrown into boot. Truly enjoy that lovely lovely house and grounds. Stay well, be safe, love from Texas.
I agree with comments below--the two of you are so funny. Very entertaining. Julie and the sledgehammer---have to say I was impressed. Those things are heavy and having to swing them around and pound them on a long peg---Julie's got muscles!
❤️I can't believe how much work there is to be done on any given day...but you both keep it informative and entertaining! Thank you for your endless energy and sense of fun....today...chicken mites! 🐔
OK Julie. being a coaster user on wooden furniture, I was shocked to see you put your tea cup down on the wooden stand beside the fireplace (without a coaster). Yeah Luke! You used the coaster on the wooden stand! 😄
When I took over lighting the fire in the fireplace, I was instructed that you needed to "heat" the chimney first. You did this by lighting a sheet or two of newsprint and holding it up inside the chimney and letting it burn. Then you lit the fire. In later years, we had a custom made grate welded and that also helped so that we didn't smoke ourselves out..
Also make a fire in a sturdy old wheelbarrow or barbecue outside. When those coals are blazing red and not smoky in any way then use a fireproof coal scuttle or old garden shovel to set the indoor fire with minimal fuss.
Love Julie and Luke they make the simple chores in life so funny a joy to watch a go get em couple such a delight I’m left smiling in to my day😀😍😍❤️👌👌🥂🥂
Must say I do enjoy your video's. I to grew up in Chicago but due to my job ended up in a small town outside of Savannah GA. I also have a great love of history. Keep going.
New binge watcher here 🙋🏼♀️. You two crack me up! Julie, those jeans you’re wearing are a dream!!! I’ve actually just searched the Internet high and low for HOURS trying to find some like it...nothin 🥺. Good on you, Julie, for swinging the sledge with such determination! Brilliant!
If you light a newspaper roll before you light the main fire and heat up the flue it helps heat the air in the chimney and allows the fireplace to draw better.
You two are so fun together! Keep "doing" fires, Julie, after much practice I now use only one match. Something to strive for, in case you're not too busy. Lol
Julie reminds me alot of Americans I know who just bumble their way through life. They can quite humourous at the best and the worse of times. Don't change anything, Julie.
watching this reminds me of my partner "listening " to my instructions. but never quite getting it right. I was so fed up of having smoke everywhere I had a woodburner fitted into the inglenook. much more efficient.
One way to "encourage" the fire to draw up the chimney is to take a lit piece of paper and hold it up in the chimney. Seemed to always work for me when I used to light my fire on the chilly British nights. The theory is that it trains the fire.
I had a fireplace just like this. I figured out that I needed to heat the air in the flu first….mine had a gas start, so I would turn on the gas and light it before laying the fire. Give it a minute and then add my kindling and wood. Never had a problem after that. Since you don’t have a gas start 🤷🏻♀️ finding another way to heat the air in the flu would be key to keeping smoke out of the room. Visions of Julie with a flame thrower come to mind. 😂 of course I am NOT suggesting that. 🙂
Here's the trick about fireplace fires. There is a cold plug in your chimney that must be SLOWLY heated to release it and begin drawing while the chimney heats up. Start a SMALL fire first!! Once the cold plug is gone and it begins to draw...then make the fire bigger. A big fire at the beginning is what causes all that smoke because the chimney is too cold and not drawing.
Oh man, I would definitely love to help out for nailing certain stuff like that for weddings. Sadly, I don’t live in the UK and would love to live there for odds and ends of jobs to try that I might try my hands at. But definitely great to see you have a go at something, Julie.
Some chimney flues that don't draw well (assuming flue is not blocked) need to be warmed first. We used to hold burning rolled paper at back until smoke started going up the flue before lighting main fire.
Thanks for sharing the goings on at Mapperton! Lol I have to settle for my electric fireplace 🤣 I hope the smile worked and Beryl is not scared off from going back into the coup!
Try a dishwasher sieve for sprinkling bicarbonate of soda around the soft furnishings in a very finely sieved sprinkle. Leave to absorb odours like smoke, pets etc and vacuum in the morning. Clean grate and hearth after each fire for freshness and anti allergy. Stack wood in piles of four and continue brick laying pattern of wood on top of initial kindling and fire lighters.
We used to roll the paper from corner to corner and tie it into a knot or as children make swords with it first as you can tie a knot in one end and you have a hilt and blade.
@@michaelgilday Indeed! We always used the Irish Times! I wonder whether Julie has been introduced to the niceties of absolute requirements when it comes to ‘scalding the pot’ for the fireside tea they will enjoy.

A bit disconcerting that smoke alarms didn’t go off with all that smoke going into the house. Would it be complete sacrilege to install a nice enamelled wood burner in these old fireplaces in order to facilitate cleaner combustion and better heat distribution (and, arguably, better fire safety)?
To aid drawing of the fire in situ you can place a rigid piece of cardboard over the opening forcing the fire to seek the oxygen overhead. Acting like a jetmaster flue system. Just until it catches.
You 2 are comical to watch, but I do understand Julie being a strong independent person having trouble with taking directions from your husband who seems a type A personality meaning a detailed person. I do have one of those husbands. LoL! Watching from Phoenix Arizona
I don’t need a half news paper to light up fire I only need some wood chips And one piece of paper. If it’s that chilly in August, how are you going to keep the manor liveable just in your residence area during a cold winter? I think you may need a fireplace servant full time just to keep up your comfort!
