I really hoped Maruyama would make the Olympics next year. Abe is excellent as well, but seeing how Maruyama figures out his opponents and sets up his throws is something special. Best Wishes to you and all Judoka for 2024!

It is all about subtle timing. If you look closely, you can see, that he feints ouchi-gari and thus provokes a forward reaction (=kuzushi). And if he gets this reaction he can enter uchi mata with great effect. Physically he is not as strong as the Eastern European judokas, but he really knows the concepts of judo.

I think the musician example would be like use three or less chords. The world is full of three chord songs, especially specific three, but use different three chords. Or less and try to still sound original.
I feel like osoto gari and ippon/morote seoi nage are some of those very basics of judo. The stuff you learn in the first class but they are all over the professional tournaments scoring medals. There are flashier ones, but learning them very well gives strong fundamentals that carry far. It's the throws everybody knows and that still work.

He hopped (not slide) in one foot to the side in order to rotate while he is pulling the opponent.

It's very similar to Ono's uchimata off of double sleeves. I've trained under Maruyma's father and have trained with Maruyama. Something that's hard to see in these videos is how absolutely blitzing fast and out of nowhere he throws the uchimata. You know its coming but theres nothing you can do about it. His father's uchi mata even now is ridiculously fast...joshiro's is on a whole other level and lacks the weaknesses that his father's has.

Wish I could train with them one day. What’s the weakness that his father has?
