  • Three flight legs over two days in late January to complete two back-to-back Angel Flight Missions. The first is from Renton, WA (KRNT) to Bend OR (KBDN) with a passenger I have flown a couple of times before. I stayed overnight in Bend in anticipation of the mission the following morning from Electric City (3W7) in central WA. However, weather concerns lead us to change the pickup airport to Ephrata WA (KEPH). The following morning after a delayed departure I flew to EPH. I flew the instrument approach to runway 3 into EPH with ice accumulation in the last few minutes. I picked up the passenger at EPH and we flew back to RNT.

Love the views of the Cascades! If you could do more of those, especially using a wing mounted camera, that would be great!

Thanks Ibrahim. The wing mounted cameras are tricky ... as you say, the images are great but they are difficult to manage on longer flights. Its not possible to turn them on and off to save batteries etc. But you comment is well taken and I will try to get more of these when I can.

I'm not sure what you can do about it, but the volume differences between the different types of audio is significant. I find myself constantly changing the volume level. The video would be more enjoyable if there was consistency between your narration, your radio transmissions, and ATC audio, in terms of volume. I hope this feedback is helpful. Please continue doing the great work you do.

Thanks for posting! I noticed you have an "angel flight" call sign - cool. So... you don't use your tail number? Can you describe how this works?

Hi Prior - When you become an Angel Flight pilot, you are assigned a personal NGFxxxx number that you can use when doing Angel Flights. This makes it a little easier for AFW to track your flight and sometimes you will get priority handling by ATC. One very important point though is when you are using your NGF number, you need to change the Flight ID in your transponder to match the NGF number. So you need to change it from your plane's normal N number to the NGF number (Most transponders allow this but sometimes the feature is not enabled. In my case I had to get an avionics shop to flip the bit to allow this on the G1000). If you can't update your Flight ID, you need to use your regular tail number ... the FAA is very clear that these must match. Here is some more detail:

Is the clippiness in your audio just on the pickup for your recorder, or are your transmissions clipped, too? Maybe you can turn up the gain somehow? Really joy your videos and appreciate the awesome service you provide. I don’t have the hours for AF yet, but do try to fly for Pilots n Paws when I can.

Thanks Merlin. I agree the audio needs to be better. Whenever I've listened to my transmissions say on LiveATC, I haven't heard that same "clippiness" (Good description) but its possible I am part of the problem. I am going try a different cables and some other things. Great you are doing Pilots and Paws. I flew a grey fox last year for a wildlife group. Very interesting missions.

I’m part of a club, and don’t yet have my IR, so having a mission, weather and schedule all line up has been more difficult than I originally thought.

Its always a scheduling challenge but an IR and access to your own plane does help. We have one guy in AFW who did over 100 missions last year! I have no idea how he does it but its very impressive.

I'm a low time IFR pilot in New England with no experience with icing. I rarely fly in the winter in even the least bit of IMC because of the icing threat. I understand your plane is FIKI, but what did you do about the ice that had accumulated on the plane during descent before you took off from Ephrata? Had it melted off while you were waiting for your passenger or was there some other way you removed it? Just looking for helpful hints in case I run into the same problem. Thanks.

I used a broom from the local airport office to get all the ice off when I was at Ephrata. Not ideal but since the conditions were very cold the ice wasn't melting. So I had to use some method to get the ice off the unprotected areas. It took a while but it worked.

Great flights interesting to see the ice encounter and particularly your bail out plan to climb above the clouds if it got really bad. Great decisions and explanations. I am getting a great deal of insight studying your videos and thought process. Thank you!

Really enjoyed the video. Love the DA42 and as a new IFR pilot I enjoyed the fact you showed the icing accumulated on the flight surfaces after you landed. What a wonderful and capable aircraft. Also, enjoy when you show the engine settings, fuel flow, altitude and speed in cruise. Thank you!
