"You gotta roll with the punches for 2018" Hello from 2020 lol
LOL and unfortunately hello again from 2021 😂
@@lindseyh4523 And HELLO again from later in 2021 where "It's not about your freedoms".
2021 says hold my beer..
2022 here and that tree has grown so much now in a 30 gallon pot and had to top the tree because it was reaching the ceiling.
Welcome to 2022 where covid restrictions might be starting to be lifted around the world, but we welcome new wars, another virus, human rights violations, strikes, food shortages in highly developed countries and record highs for gas prices.
A long time ago I watched your video on your coffee plant and became convinced I would never be able to keep mine alive without volcanic ash, LOL. I planted it behind my shed under a big oak tree and it turns out that's all it wanted. it's 3 years old, over 6 ft tall right now and thriving, zone 9b/10
It starts at 1:30
Good info for coffee loving gardeners out there. Thanks and stay warm.
I don't even drink coffee, but it is a mighty beautiful plant!
All of what you say isn’t always the case! I have a coffee plant that is only in a 2-3 gallon pot(about 2.5 feet tall)and it is flowering for the first time I just noticed today! Also, the flowers are forming on new growth that just came over the winter while it’s been in the house. I live in Minnesota, so it lives on the deck in the summer and in a south facing window in the winter. Also, if I didn’t keep the soil moist at all times, it would be dead, or have lost most of its leaves from stress! Don’t let your coffee plants dry out, they do not like that!
Is your coffee plant still alive and if so how is it doing? I'm in mn and am interested in growing one too
I was curious, so I started to water my coffee plants differently (both of them living next to each other in a south-facing window, same soil, same pots) a month ago. The one I watered less and let dry a bit in between watering didn't grow at all, the bigger leaves started to turn yellow and drop. The one I watered more frequently (no water in the overpot, but consistent watering every other day) is almost double the size and deep, lush green. So I'm back to frequent watering, and hope that the plant recovers.
Kevin, I just saw your question! I don’t have my coffee tree anymore. Unfortunately, it did so well it got to be too big for my home and space, and I got rid of it.
My coffee plant is in a container that's probably less than a gallon and it's flowering. Plus it's probably only about 2 years old by now. I consider myself very lucky.
@@kadan_gustafson6609 That is so interesting, I was lead to believed it HAD to be very large and in large containers. I glad I don't need to be so worried about this at all. :)
Thanks for the tips! I’m growing my own coffee trees but I was lost on how make them grow healthy but now anymore. Awesome video! Keep it up!
I think all your hard work, research and experimental efforts of love with this coffee tree could be really really helpful for many other folks in the coffee research industry.
Fabulous video, glorious, practical tips!!
Thank you very much for sharing!!
I have 2 trees from seed. One is in a kratky water pot and is thriving. The other is in soil; healthy but not as big. I knew most of these tips, but I was unaware I needed 5 Gallon worth of roots!! I was about to switch my nutrients solution as he is turning 3 years old, but I will hold back now knowing he needs more roots. Helpful video !
That plant looks awesome!
great video!!! very informative but not overwhelming; so interesting to hear about how the plant signals work love that
I literally think about asking a question on this and bam next day there's a video on it 👍👍👍
daniel brady you have ESPN
You have videos for every plant I want to have!!
As a Colombian who worked grabbing coffee long time ago in a plantation I found this very interesting!!!
every person have many interesting and hobbies to do. at your age as garderner is wonderful. this is many knowledge to know about science project, plant geography or plant climate changes, thank you keep it up.
Tip #6
Grow more than 1 coffee plant. In case one of your plants die in the process, or if you're trying to grow one of the other species of coffee. Coffea arabica is the only coffee plant that will self-pollinate.
Ty ty ty.
I need all the info on growing coffee & all its quirks!
Wonderful information! Thank you
Hi, can you please tell me the name of intro music.
Just showing Rick some of your videos, and this caught his eye :) I guess he may want a coffee tree next. I told him he can have one when I get a garden!
Ty Luke...very informational!!!
After I found your coffee tree video I got some from Amazon and love it but didn't need 8 so gave away most to friends at work
very informative and thorough!
luke thanks for the tips
My coffee plant is only in a mug as the pot for now, so will come back to this video in a few years...:)
I drilled drainage into a favorite coffee mug that got cracked (and repaired but not suitable for beverages) for my one coffee seedling! I call her "Shine", since she's all about "Rise and shine!"
i bought a very green looking plant that came in an inner and outer pot, the outer pot was just a very big coffee cup.
thought it seemed quirky to put a flower in a coffee cup, and decided to put it in the middle of my dark room, seemed to do fairly well.
but apparently it's a coffee plant, not sure why that didn't occur to me at first.
What a gorgeous plant! Even if it doesn't fruit it is beautiful to have for its lush, green foliage. Thanks. I will consider purchasing a coffee plant. Would be nice if it produced beans...but if not...just as nice. Awesome vid! Happy New Year🎉🎉
Thanks for watching Barabara. It does make a very pretty foliage plant indeed!
Bravo 👏! Nice advice!
Outstanding info
It is not correct to describe coffee as such a short tree. I have seen wild coffee in Ethiopia (unmanaged) that easily grows above 3 metres. I pruned my tree when it reached 2.5 metres (in London, UK); it flowered without much problem and I still have trees planted from the first batch.
Finally, 'rainforest' is not the same as 'tropical forests' -and while there are differences across rainforests, in tropical rainforests near the equator, there are no seasonal differences (dry and wet), it rains pretty much daily!
Please check you fully understand what you claim to know!
Thank you! The best info I've heard on growing coffee to date.
One question, my coffee plant is in a 1 gallon pot so I'd there any harm in moving it into a bigger 5 or 10 gallon pot now or must I go though the gradual pot size increases?
from another video i seen of his ... if the roots fill the pot its time to go another size and watch the roots then change the pot size when ready until you reach 10 gallon..i beleive he mentioned ounce at 5 gallons i think 1 year later you need to determine the 10 gallon change
I have a few questions about flowering and fruiting. I notice two berries on my coffee plant which I recently turned into an indoor plant once it started showing brown leaf edges. It is still below 5 feet and I don’t think it has matured enough to start fruiting.
1. Should I prune the two berries to encourage more tree growth
2. Once it is ready for fruiting do I need to manually pollinate the flowers?
Cool vidéo thanks
great info. i am a coffee planter and have been growing since 10yrs bt i did'nt know abt these things
As you have experience in coffee trees , how long will coffee tree take to bloom ??
@@wessamsaifeldin6715 in recent coffee hybrid varieties it takes only 2 yrs for blossom
It looks so much different then my coffee plant! Other then the leaves. I'm pretty sure my coffee tree is actually like 5 trees. I've propagated a few too and put them in different containers I'm sure it's going to take a long long time!
THANK YOU YOU ARE VERY GOOD, I WILL BE BUYING A LIVE PLANT.
Can you do a coffee plant care video? How often you water, fertilization, etc. I have a smaller plant that is putting out a lot of growth. It’s been in its container for a while and I’m not sure how to tell when the nutrients have been leached. Since they’re acidic, I was wondering if I can use spent coffee grounds to keep it happy. Yours is beautiful. Thanks in advance.
The first episode of 2018!
Here is to many more!
Question if I’d like to replant my coffee plant into a bigger pot can I cut some of the roots off to open up more space? My plant is about 5 feet tall about 10 years old. It also has some white gooey stuff growing on it and I’ve tried getting it off with vinegar and it goes away for a while but then it comes back what am I doing wrong?
Very helpful. will try tomorrow on my 10 year old Kona plant which has not yet fruited due to mismanagement (but looks beautiful)
You might find this interesting! I've got a coffee plant growing in a 2 Gallon planter, and it's putting out coffee cherries! I've got about 20 cherries on this one plant right now! My other one is in a 1 Gallon planter (they're both 10 years old) and it's putting out cherries too! Now that they're producing cherries, I'm not sure if I should move them to a bigger pot or not. Any tips?
I have a small coffee plant, only about 40 cm tall, and it has 5 thin trunks! Should I separate these so there’s only one trunk per pot or will the plant take care of that?
I just bought one but it has like 9 seedlings in one 3 inch pot. I didn't find the planting guide. Do I separate them?
What would you suggest to buy with trifecta? My plant still has a few years until it will produce but i want to be on it. Glad i found you.
Which coffee tree would you recommend for north central Texas?
On the fertilizer Trifecta Plus, the directions are for pounds per Sq Feet. How much do you use in watering your coffee tree? Please help, I don't want to kill my tree the first time fertilizing it. Thanks
I just bought Arabian coffee tree what kind of fertilizer do I use 20-20-20 or 15-10-15 those are just examples
Hello I have 4 coffee seedlings. The largest being about 8 inches tall and is in a 6 inch pot. They seem to be doing well but only have leaves at the top and are not gaining trunk girth. What am I doing wrong and how can I help my plants? Thanks!
I'm guessing the MI stands for Michigan, I live in the UP and I'm just wondering if you're in the upper or lower peninsula? I tried to find it on your about page, but I wasn't able to. Just wondering because there's quite a difference from where I'm at and places downstate, gardening-wise.
"Just gotta roll with the punches of 2018" lmao little did he know the years to come
do you have any tips on indoor pollination of coffe trees? i have heard that they only bloom in the night
I have a 6 year old coffee plant that's big and happy. I'm having some flowering issues though. It forms a thousand buds, they develop but then the flower don't open. 99% of the buds just turn brown and die; the 10 buds that do open as flowers form cherries. Not sure why none of the buds open as flowers. Any ideas?
If you're growing a Coffee plant indoors do you need to do anything special where fertilization is concerned, since the plant doesn't have the access to wind and insects that an outdoor plant would?
Julie, coffee is self fertile meaning they won't need any additional pollination even though it wouldn't hurt.
Can a branch cut from a coffee tree still grow?
very good job Luck but i have a question ..where is the original seeds? because you live in Michigan but i live in Nevada and my family grow coffee in my country in different weather....in my house and in the farmer and i remember when i have vacations over there the nights very cool...and same times the day time also. i am from Colombia and my family from Buga CITY...but i grow in Cali ..and all my family has coffee plants all over in the house. i became a gardener 3 years ago and i love your videos thank you for be there.
How many pounds of coffee could you get from that tree? If I wanted to grow all my coffee how many trees would I need? I am in the Philippines.
Que Mango most full sized trees yield 12-30oz of roast beans. That’s 1/3 to half the size of a full tree.. so I’d guess it yields 8oz of beans by weight after roasting.
It looks like a 3-5 year old tree. It takes arabica trees 8 years or so to reach a full 16oz yield.
@@zackbrown2133 that's really useful info. I'm growing coffee and I was wondering how many years it would take to fruit from seed?
My coffee tree was well over 6 feet tall. I pruned it and it continued to bear fruit.
luckyyyyyyyy lol
Same here, though it did shoot out new branches from the bottom of the trunk like he suggested.
I think he meaning don't OVER do it, and avoid doing it closer to fruiting "season" for the tree where your growing it if possible.
I live in Puerto Rico, on my property, after Hurricane Maria I noticed 20 or 30 plants that I thought was coffee (maybe 12 inches tall). I downloaded this species identifying app and it said Arabica Coffee. So now I have about 60 plants. They’re about waist height. I haven’t touched them or anything besides watering during drought season. When will they begin giving fruit? The oldest is about 4-5 years old and are much taller. Around chest height. Same question
I have coffee seeds but I don't know how to germinate them. Any tips would be appreciated.
I could use some help with my 9ish month old coffee plant.
It's probably 2 foot tall at this point. But I have a few concerns...
The plant is losing its lower leaves, so about 50% of the plant is trunk at this point, with lots of outward growth at the top.
1) Did it not get enough light?
2) Why are the bottom leaves turning yellow and dropping?
3) How often should I be feeding it?
The new leaves look healthy, but I'm constantly losing lower leafs, which is concerning...
Plant has been grown indoors always, soil is a mix of a variety of things including crushed lava rock.
Very helpful. Thank you so much! :) I shared this on twitter. Have you named your coffee plant? I named mine Stanley! He also loves quartz crystals in the soil. He's growing super fast. Again thank you! :))
What do you do if all the leaves fall what would be the best method to fix it ???
At what age/size should we start de-leafing?
My coffee tree is 1 year old. It’s loaded with flowers but they keep drying up and falling off but doesn’t make fruit after. Any ideas?
Have mine now for 5 years. It lost a ton of leaves. I keep it in Maine where I have room for it. It increased in size after 2nd year. When I first got it, it stayed the size of a potted miniature rose, not doing anything. Took it to Maine, it became a 3 foot tall shrub. Still no fruit. I will be repotting it in a few weeks.
Really great info, thanks! Do you think you could do a video on tips for getting citrus to flower?
Honestly I could but there is no special tricks to getting them to flower. The plants will flower in the winter once they are large enough. Until then it is just a waiting game honestly.
MIgardener | Simple Organic Gardening & Sustainable Living That's a breath of fresh air, thanks again! Love your videos by the way.
I have a few coffee plants indoors. The oldest one is just producing its first buds. It is not growing them on bare branches like you say in this video. It is forming them right where the leaf joins the branch and mostly on the green growth of branches just starting to bark up. I didn’t even think about the pot size of my plant. It must be at least five gallons if it is producing flower buds. I am watering it every one to two weeks. The only fertilizing I have done is some lava rocks and occasional miracle grow last summer and some biochar at the beginning of this year. I use some fertilizer spikes before that too and they seemed to work. I must be doing something right and your guide helps. Thanks.
Nicholas Hoffnagle I agree with you! I came looking for videos about coffee plant flowering because mine is! But I also dispute some of his statements on here. My plant is small, and only in about a 3 gallon pot, yet it IS flowering. And, the flowers are forming on new growth that has just grown over the winter in my house. I live in Minnesota, so it lives outside on the deck in the summer, then comes in and sits in a south facing window for the winter.
Very cool. Congrats.
Where do you get your fertilizer- online maybe??
Hey man greetings from manitoba . stay warm !
Manitoba, is it colder there? Brrrrr

Yahh its -27 celcius today bur thankfully its warmed up a bit
Hello I am from South Africa, my coffee tree stems on my seedling are turning Brown and the plants starts dieing, what can I do thanks Wayne
Also in South Africa and growing coffee
I wish he answered this... :/
I love your videos! My coffee tree seems to be a total anomaly…it is arabica 10ft tall x 4ft wide grown indoors, and grows all year except in midsummer. I chop it in oct/nov and by December it will have multiple 5-10” shoots, which I keep chopping through the year. It is in a 25gal tall pot and I’m trying to get more lateral bushy growth to maximize berries…should I try a 24” wide but shorter 25gal pot? It flowers and fruits from sept-march.
By shoots I mean apical/vertical. I’m tapped out on vertical space
Where did you get your 10 gallon planter from?
How do you prevent the browning of the leaf tips? Also how do you keep the soil acidic enough to allow the plant to absorb the iron in the soil? I have a 3 year pointed bourbon coffee tree and an a 3 year Caturra Amarillo that’s about to flower soon. I live in Southern California btw.
Use spray bottle with warm (not overly warm...remember your trying to replicate its natural growing area which is Hawaii )water in it.....to raise humidity...its the lack of humidity that causes brown tips..:) good luck regards from Australia..
Andrew Thomas thanks for the reply I’m gonna give that a try
Andrew Thomas do you mean warm water
Andrew Thomas what soil do you use? I’m from nsw
If half of it is green and the top is brown almost black does that mean its dying and is there a way to revive it ???
If I fertilise the tree with aquarium waste, will it have enough potassium?
Hey I have a qustionbis b it possible to fuse a blueberry and a grape?
Ps I'm new
Can these grow in Arizona?????
I live in a subtropical area and coffee tree just flower and fruit on their own. Now, I understand more detail about this plant. Thanks!
I am so jealous!
I used coffee ground for my money tree and the leaves are curly anything to with the coffee ground? It's not dieing or any the leaves is dark green and it doesn't grow either 😕
maybe you put too much, if i remember well, it is a spoon per year in the pot, try adding tea leaves, washed then mixed egg shells and dry then mixed banana peels ;) a spoon of each just around the stem
What about using coffee grounds as fertilizer. Coffee grounds have key nutrients required for plant growth.
Thats 40 liters For the rest of the world.
Thank you, I was just wondering!
Thanks!
That’s a big pot omg
thank you!
I have mine in a 50 liter pot it works wonders
I believe its like 12 to 13 gallons
what about citrus trees i have a few of them one is 9 yrs old and no fruit yet (indoors im in minnesota)
increase the light amount and try transplanting it. Sometimes all it needs is a little environmental change to flower.
Can I grow dwarf -size fruit trees such as figs, peach, and coffee in 10-gal grow bags (fabric pots)?
True dwarfs can be grown in a 10 gallon pot or more yes.
What's your take on fabric pots? How long does it last? Can it be re-used? Can it be composted?
My coffee tree is over 10 foot tall and it keeps going up! I think pruning is needed! However, it's blooming, so...
When are you going to start your seeds for this season
March sometime
thanks. nice video.
do you have decaf plant seeds for sale? ;)
I wish!
How old is your plant?
Jaka powinna być ziemia do sadzonek kawy.
Root ball must fills 5gal then move to at least a 10-15gal pot
How do they get pollinated indoors?. did I miss that in the video?
coffee trees pollinate itself as all flowers contains both male and female things. If you want to be sure take a soft little bruch and gently proceed in each flower... could be long work
@@robingraillot6343 I think.the robusta variety needs another plan, which is sad I only have one 😭
Can you make a coffee playlist ?
Can we please have an update and answer some of these questions, in the comments section?!? Thank you.
will it grow in southern california?
Yes. I am growing in San Diego county.
What if someone only wants to max the leaf yield? Asking for a friend
Kratom related?
I live in Florida and one week in January it was 80 plus degrees for a week straight and my coffee tree bloomed! And made berries! Then it turned cold again and all my berries died...
So do bees get a buzz off coffee flowers? :P
I don't know! hehehe
no matter the month, as soon as i move any plant inside, it becomes growing season again. keep the temps down and light low
Does anyone know if this plant is poisonous to cats?
other people have mentioned everything except the beans are pretty toxic
Does anybody get a reply from this guy to their questions?
I think he is more active in IG
