I had this game as a kid and I didn't realize until just now that most of the enemies are supposed to be toys. To be fair, I wasn't as familiar with Mario series, and most of the obstacles in this game are just weird blurry shapes after more weird blurry shapes. It's fun watching this game get destroyed!
Pretty sure that the only toys are the Shy Guys and possibly the Monchees. There are other robotic enemies but they're not toys. But to be fair, as a kid I didn't realize some of these enemies were toys either.
One of the most confusing things about this game is that nobody even really seems to know what its about..? Everyone thinks its some boring puzzle platformer but its obviously more similar to mario 64 with every single mechanic (except a few new ones) pointing in that direction

A lot of them were in Donkey Kong (1994) on the Gameboy, the game this game is a psuedo-sequel to.
Like MrFanboy24 said, this game didn't invent much of anything. Donkey Kong for the Game Boy beat even SM64 to the punch with most of Mario's moves.
