  • Love it when you can find bike parts that not only are lighter and cheaper than the big brands out there, but also looks better… after some modifications ;)
    In this video I show how simple it is to remove the graphics on the classic "UNO" Ebay stem and swapping out the bolts for Titanium. You will end up with a super light stem that rivals the boutique stems for 10 times the price.

    Locked in did a video about switching all of your bolts to Ti and although he said the overall gram loss too expensive per gram, I think you're right to stick with the mentality of cutting the small stuff because there's so much more of those things and they add up. Still much less expensive for the lightest bolts, headset cap, chains, etc than a set of Lightweight wheels.

    Be careful with the Titanium bolts. Not all Ti bolts are the same, an Titanium is "stretchier" than steel. It's not uncommon to snap the heads off of them. (Ask me howe I know!). I've switched to using Stainless Steel on all of my stem and handlebar hardware. It seems better suited to this critical task.

      @ridesofjapan  6 лет назад +4

      Had Ti bolts on other stems and then can start to look pretty nasty after a while (is it corrosion?)

    • @ridesofjapan

      I have had no problem at all. Does what is suppose to do.
      Have it tightened down to recommended torque (5Nm) around the steerer, think slightly less around the bar (maybe 4nm) without any carbon paste.

      Rides of Japan can't seem to find anything worth mentioning with acetone. But i found enough about carbolift which is paintlifter for carbon parts. But reviews say its "too effective", meaning it even removes the thin cosmetic carbon layer on top(like 3k, UD, 12K weave)

    Does anyone know a good way to remove graphics from a carbon frame? Would it work the same way perhaps?

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  5 лет назад +1

      Only a Northern Cyclist most likely not, most frames have thick layer of clear coat covering the graphics. Doing it the chemical way would mean much stronger substances... that could potentially harm the carbon resin as well.
      There’s a clip in the following video of how we removed graphics under lacquer on a seat post in this video:
      ruclips.net/video/zklPh1hEPP8/видео.html
      If it would work in whole frame I can’t say though.

      Rides of Japan ah thanks for reply, sounds like I’m probably better off leaving it then, don’t want to make a total balls up of it and ruin my lovely new build, it’s a brand new frame as well (replacing a heavy Mason Bokeh with Flanders Forte Kern)... it was only really small minor graphics I was thinking of removing, prob not worth the risk

    Hi, I'm looking for a 110mm stem. I've looked into the ones you have mentioned, but haven't had any luck in finding availability anywhere. Any suggestions for other stems that come in around 95-110g range? around the 6 degree +/- is ideal. Thank you so much in advance!

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  2 года назад +1

      No, if the graphics is under clear coat it doesn’t work. Also, lately “big brand” seems to be using different methods to apply graphics (not just a thin layer of paint) making it harder or impossible to remove with acetone alone.

  • @KriegKadaver

    How long do you have to scrub? I can't seem to get graphics off my bike frame this way. Does it matter that the nail polish remover that I got "contains no acetone"?

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  5 лет назад +1

      The Hypnotoad frames are usually clear coated so this method will not work.
      This will only work on non-clear coated parts like stems, handlebars and seatpost etc.
      (Clear coated parts also exist, this will not work on those either.)

      Not if its under clear coat.
      And depending on the surface it could affect that as well in a non-desirable way. So if you try, do it first at a point that won’t be too visible. (At your own risk)

      Kari Kepala Gajah the reach from one 56 to another brands 56 doesn’t necessarily need to be the same so my length should probably not play a role in your decision especially if it’s not an Open U.P.
      If you’re riding comfortably on your current set up then no reason to change, if you feel like your a bit cramped and want to be more stretched out then trying a different stem length might be a good place to start. This Uno stem is so cheap that even if you don’t like it, it’s not the end of the world :)
