    It's actually a common misconception that the bezel was to measure oxygen. They actually measure elapsed time at depth so that you know how much decompression time is needed when surfacing. Too much time under too much water pressure is understandably not good for humans.

    • @Louiscare
      @Louiscare 10 месяцев назад +11

      Or generally timing stuff underwater yes, measuring how long you have to breathe would be horribly inaccurate and useless as dive tanks have meters that will tell you how much is left

      @Louiscare also very true on both points!

    • @TheIronDuke9
      @TheIronDuke9 9 месяцев назад +3

      Yes. Exactly. A pressure gauge is used to measure remaining air in the tank

    • @patrickandkennafenwick3958
      @patrickandkennafenwick3958 4 месяца назад +1

      It’s about N2 saturation. The pressure gauge on the tank tells you how much air you use. It’s like you said, just adding the specifics of what makes it bad to stay too deep too long

    • @manoflego123
      @manoflego123 4 месяца назад

      @patrickandkennafenwick3958 exactly right, you need to know how to calculate N2 saturation and how long to time your decompression time as you slowly surface, and that's where the timing bezel can save lives.

      When you are under water, the pressure is higher than normally (you have the weight of all the water on top of you). The deeper you go, the higher the pressure (more water to push on top of yourself).
      Now, when pressure is higher, your body absorbs and retains certain gases. There are charts called decompression charts where you can check how long you can stay (regardless of air, which is another independent constraint) at a certain depth. Before diving you used to decide at what depth you would stay, and based on the table you knew hoe long was safe. Nowadays oat divers usually carry a “diving computer” that looks just like a digital watch, and it constantly calculates the time you can remain at the current depth

    Im not sure if they did this before tanks had air guages or something, but the timer is used for timing bottom time in no-decompression diving. Your air has a guage on it (yes i even have the old guage from my dads gear he used in the 70s). You use air to determine turn around points, with a margin of safety of course.

  • @Mailo1x
    @Mailo1x 10 месяцев назад +3

    Ughh, wrong. You don't estimate how much air do you have by time, but by pressure, usually 50bar being a limit. New divier will use way more air than exp one due to inflating/deflating BCD to keep neutral level (not going up or down), so sometimes 7L 200 bar can provide longer dive than 12L 200bar. Dive bezel is for keeping how long have you been under water, not how much air do you have! Back then by using max depth and time you would calculate N2 level in your body to make safety stops to avoid DCS (look "diving tables"). Now dive computers do it for you, but I'm still taking my watch for diving, for sake of tradition. DOXA watches even have double bezel that combine time and max depth for non-decopression dives - meaning that you don't have to make a safety stop/N2 level in your body won't cause DCS. Why N2 in your body is bad? Air is, more or less mostly O2 and N2. With higher pressure (going deeper, more water above you, you get it) more N2 can get into your tissues. Pressure at 20 meters depth is 30 bar (10 from atmosphere and 20 from water), so your body will be able to absorb more N2 (but absorbing takes time, its not instant, your tissues are not a sponge, thats why some deep dives sill can be without a safety stop). Now going to the surface N2 will leave your tissues, start to form bubbles and... Clog your blood stream, cresting DCS. Thats why some divers use trimixes, where % of O2 is same, but part of N2 is replaced with H2, because H2 is neutral for your body. Its way more complicated than "how much air do you have"
