As an avid recreational SCUBA diver, Dr. Know-it-all has seen far too much misinformation about dive watches, and especially how and why dive bezels are used, on the internet. This episode is intended to explain exactly what a dive watch is, and in particular how to use a dive bezel correctly. Why is using it important? What is it NOT used for? Why have dive watches been superseded by dive computers? And how would you plan your dive using dive tables and a watch? This episode covers all these topics, plus more!

I use mine for the parking meter, laundry timer, cooking timer, I also go swimming at my neighborhood pool and wash the car by hand that’s the extent of my diver watch uses, LOL, I live 1000 miles from any ocean.
Just an absolute fantastic video! I love watches and always prefer a diver watch just because I never like to take my watch off. Diving has always been something that I wanted to get certified for. Now I’m looking forward to it even more
Short answer: Immediately before you go underwater to start your SCUBA adventure move the dive watch bezel's 12 o'clock triangle to the minute hand. When your SCUBA adventure is at its end, immediately before ascending to the surface look at the watch's minute hand and make a mental note of the number on the bezel the minute hand is pointing at. Remember that number. Back on land when you're planning for your next dive and you need to know how long you were underwater at your previous SCUBA adventure, use the number that the watch's minute hand pointed to on the bezel before you started your ascent to the water's surface.
REAL short answer: bottom timer
It doesn’t tell you air - that’s what your dive computer is for.
It doesn’t tell you depth - that’s what your dive computer is for.
It technically tells you time - but let’s be real, that’s what your dive computer is for 😂
But it does look good in pictures of your trip.
Excellent information throughout, I'm not a diver but now interested!
Thank you. Good explanation!
Wow 1st time on your channel and what a great video put simple for us and clear I now am a little smarter for watching your vid I’m gonna subscribe now because I’m totally impressed,Thank you so much very very helpful !! 👍🏻
Helpful, and very interesting!
Thank you for providing good information.
Great video! Extremely informative. I have an Omega Seamaster and love it, but must admit I don't dive with it very often. The Shearwater Teric has become my goto dive computer.
Great computer, the Shearwater. I've looked into that model myself. And as for diving with the Omega, I have to admit that given the cost I'm a bit hesitant, which is silly I know, but still.... :)
@@DrKnowitallKnows I have a lume mod Vostok amphibia 710 with 0-20 with the rest of the of being five minute marks all lumed and a cermaic insert on a submariner style bezel with steel tension insert wire.
Brilliant video thanks
Thank you awesome presentation
What illumination option does a dive computer have?
very informative
Thanks for that! i have always wondered how bezel works, i have had a watch with one 30 years ago. My mate used to turn it. and we always wondered how it worked.
WOW !! thanks so much !
Good informstion
Omega is kinda a status symbol there as well. An smp 300 is still 5-6k new retail. Not like you’re sporting a g shock lol 😂
hey doc. 1st time viewer. i dont think ive ever learned so many useful facts from one video. silliest is the spelling of the "bends". ive never actually seen it written, only spoken. i honestly thought it was spelled benz. lol. thats just what it sounded like to me when ppl were saying it
You’re incorrect about the dive bezel. You use it as timer going down not as stop watch style to see how long you have been diving. That’s why it only goes one way, if you use it like a timer you can only lose time. That’s why a lot of other dive bezels only have minute increments between the 0-10/15 marks, so you can accurately time your decompression stops.
How can you use it as timer counting down when the numbers increase in clockwise direction? It can only count up, so like a stopwatch.
Thank you for the video. If it took watching the full 15.5 minutes of this for a novice to understand how a dive bezel works, that person should stay out of the water, unless it is to wash the dishes.
100% please don't get in the water if you needed to watch the whole video 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hi there, want to know your experience from Omega Seamaster. I feel my new 2022 omega seamaster bezel a bit like loose its like playing a tiny bit side to side (rotating is all good anti clockwise), plus when i gentle press the bezel for example at 3'o clock, the opposite bezel at 9'o clock its like lifting up a little bit... I ask omega boutique and read some from omega forum they say its normal that the bezel have a little bit of play (not stiff like breitling or rolex), but i am just wondering your experienced? Is it normal? Thx. Great Video btw.
Look up the video "The Surprising Reasons I'll Never Own an Omega Seamaster 300 Pro"
Time for an Apple Watch Ultra review!
Is there any significance to multi colored bezels? Some have red going to 15 or 20 min and a different color for rest.
yes, in the sense that orange above all other colors will maintain its visibility better than any other color. Also the multicolor tends to be 25% one color (15 minutes) and 75% another. this has to do with the end of your dive/possible necessary decompression time.
I Love My Seamaster!
I used mine for lunch breaks, laundry, and bus departure times.
How often do you pressure test your watches ?
I tend to do it when I need regular service. As I only dive to around 40m max I’m not exactly pushing the watch to its limits :)
I'm subscribing only because you set it to 420
Hi what about G shock digital watch for diving purpose
As he said the bezel is basically a stopwatch so a G-Shock has that function.
yes
Very informative! What are your thoughts of these new dive computers that are doubling as dive/everyday watches like the suunto D5 or the recent shearwater peregrine?
I actually love the concept. The ScubaPro Z3 I own and love was a good step toward this, but I think the newer ones with color screens and more smart watch features are even more compelling. Just have to come up with that $1,000 to get one is all ;) BTW, I've looked into the Garmin Descent as well. I think version 2 of that dive watch will be about the perfect watch for diving (except for the size--woo!)
@@DrKnowitallKnows For sure, Garmin is quite reliable! I'm patiently waiting the day that the tech gets so good that the price becomes more reasonable lol
So its a countdown timer basically.....?
How dare you use a dive watch for its intended purpose 😂
Where exactly is overused
only use it for laundry 🤣🤣🤣
you look like Michael Keaton in Birdman.
Ah just put it on the actual minute hand next time if there is a next time than assume as it confusing for beginners
do people fart when they dive?
Is he really a doctor? Or does he just have a master's degree?
Short answer: bottom timer
I use mine to time my partner trying on clothes. Alas, 60 minutes is sometimes not enough.
97.3% of people who own a divers watch with a Bezel don't even know how to swim and never go to the beach. They spend money they don't have to buy popular expensive Dive watches because they are dumb. This video has 10k+ views because many persons followed youtubers and purchased these watches only to then google what things on the watches are used for "The more they know"
Higher water resistance could also be considered a way of judging good build quality, not to mention lots of people just like the way dive watches look.
I think your explanation in the Bezel application is kinda incorrect. The triangle on the Bezel is placed at the time you want to get off water, not on the minute hand. For instance, in the video, your minute hand is at 30th minute mark, if your oxygen tank only last 15 minutes, you place the triangle at the the 45th minute mark. So, when the minute hand reaches the bezel triangle, you know your time is up. The unidirectional bezel prevents the triangle rotating in a direction which extends the initial time.
There are two inventions that are enormously successful that I can't wrap my head around. 1) Ketchup. Why? It's an awful tasting high fructose corn syrup concoction that's sickeningly sweet. 2) The dive watch. Sure, if you're a diver, buy a Rolex Submariner but 99.9% of Submariners never go on dives. They are worn by Wall Street douchebags driving their Range Rovers to the mall. - I'm obviously a fool. Both of these inventions are enormously popular though I still can't fathom why. My bad.
I read an article a few years back about why there aren't a ton of gourmet ketchup flavors, even though there's a huge variety in other popular condiments (yellow, dijon, etc. mustard). The main point is that ketchup is unique among condiments because it allegedly maximizes four of five flavor profiles (sweet, salty, sour, savory). This explains the dominance of Heinz ketchup because a competitor would have to reduce the intensity of one of those tastes, making the alternative ketchup flavor profile less desirable.
That's why ketchup is filled with sugar, and why people love it lol
stick ur eyes on camera please
No diver uses a watch. We use DIVING COMPUTERS.
In a second
It sets time zone
That’s it
