    I found this movie for $3.25 at a local dollar store.
    I felt like Indiana Jones finding a rare gem. If that gem was a metaphor for a severely underrated 1980's movie and if Indiana Jones wore a one size too small Jurassic Park t-shirt, Black Cargo sweat pants, and raided DVD bargain bins.

      @@Bjorick Any one of thousands of people can nominate someone for the prestigious award. And two people have come forward saying they nominated Trump.
      But on its website, the Nobel committee warns not to attach too much importance to a nomination.
      “Any person or organization can be nominated by anyone eligible to nominate,” the committee states. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has no input into submissions, though it decides who actually wins the prize. “To simply be nominated is therefore not an endorsement or extended honour to imply affiliation with the Nobel Peace Prize or its related institutions,” the committee states.
      Nonetheless, Trump has touted the nomination repeatedly at campaign rallies, on Twitter and in TV ads.

    The movie is officially 40 years old!
    True this movie isn't as popular as 'Rocky' and director Jim Sharman has officially disowned it plus the Screen Actors Guild strike of 1980 forced Sharman to get crafty but still has a minor cult following over the years
    The movie has even inspired a musical adaptation in London as of 2015
    Give the filmmakers credit that this depicted and predicted a 24/7 culture of voyeuristic reality television, celebrity politicians, mental health crises, media saturation, corporate takeovers, and subliminal advertising with eerie accuracy
    This Denton tv program is so dedicated even the audience members are constantly present to the point of falling asleep in their seats
    The film isn't a total disaster despite its mixed reception upon its release;
    There's good songs, flashy costumes, bright staging, and actors committed to the material particularly Harper as Janet going from frustrated, bored wife to fake celebrity
    It looks terrific as well even if the plot is downright confusing
    There's even a shocking twist to why this show is being orchestrated the way it is it surprised me
    This holds up surprisingly well, and for all the obvious, above-mentioned reasons, it connects more in 2021 than it did in ’81 mainly to the queer audience and tv lovers
    It’s a sort of Sliding Doors-like, alternate-universe re-imagining of what the Majors’ lives might have been like had their car never broken down that fateful, velvet-dark and rainy night in 1975
    Truthfully given how accurately it predicted the future, it’s actually scarier and spookier than anything that took place inside Frank N. Furter's castle
    'Shock Treatment' hasclever satire of tv and entertainment on human exploitation with some nice musical numbers
    Yet the 1975 movie will always stand the test of time that's for sure

    Better Brad and Janet. Some fantastic songs. And no movie predicted the state of affairs today more accurately than this one. That final scene of the mob of conservative small-towners who are lining up to get their straitjackets from the celebrity billionaire, not to mention reality TV. I think that what few people gave it a chance after finding out that there was no Tim Curry were probably put off by the atrocious first musical number, and if they stuck it out, "Thank God I'm a Man" would have driven them out. It's too bad, because otherwise the movie was fricking amazing.

    • @Bjorick
      @Bjorick 3 года назад

      meh, if the people watching it are so closed minded that they can't see the point of view of another, or try to understand why people like what they like, then it's no big loss. Why would you want someone from the cancel culture watching your product anyways, they have no money, likely pirate it, and then will just bitch and whine about it.

    I am probably one of the very few people who can claim to have seen Shock Treatment when it was first released in the theaters back in 1981 (I was already a huge Rocky Horror fan, when Shock Treatment was released).
    I remember enjoying the musical numbers, but being confused as to the plot of the movie. I also remember the movie being directly targeted at Rocky Horror fans, and they did show up for Shock Treatment, but everyone was trying to figure out how to interact with the movie, the way that they were used to interacting with Rocky Horror. I remember the Rocky Horror fans being disappointed that it just wasn't the same as their beloved Rocky.
    I continued to see Rocky Horror after Shock Treatment, and they even added a new audience participation line........towards the end of Rocky, when everyone is heading towards the pool, the audience would yell "last one into the pool has to be in Shock Treatment !"
    I have just recently (early 2024) started thinking about Shock Treatment again, and I just watched it again for the first time since 1981. I can honestly say that I enjoyed it far more today, than I did back in 1981. Perhaps the movie was just too far ahead of it's time, what with it's eerily accurate prediction of the rise of reality TV and media obsession and our 24/7 media culture.
    If the script was reworked to smooth out the plot and make it more coherent and give it a more natural flow, I believe that Shock Treatment could be a much more popular movie.
    As it stands, it is a rare and little known gem from the early 80's that looked many years into the future, and gave us a stunningly accurate prediction of what was yet to come.
    The songs are actually quite good, and with the cheat notes available on the internet to help fans understand the plot, I have come to have a much greater appreciation for this cult classic.

    You make a factual mistake in that this film was NOT only released for midnight viewing. It WAS released like any other film with showings all day, at least in Indianapolis. AND like RHPS...because of RHPS actually, some cinemas tried it out for midnight viewing. I see Wikipedia says the same thing about the film but I remember seeing it at a normal time the first time I saw it. I bought the film soundtrack album on my 18th birthday, October 2, 1981.
    If the plan was to have no showings but midnight then General Cinemas cheated and ran it like other releases in Indianapolis, IN at least.

    • @egglady
      @egglady 7 лет назад +6

      It may have been screened before midnight in certain cities but it never received a wide release all over the country. It was just a limited release in select cities. The point he was trying to make was that since it never had a normal theatrical release, most people never had a chance to see it even if they wanted to.

    My own opinion, and that is all that it is, this film would stand on its own better, if it wasn't a sequel. I also liked the music for the RHPS better but there might be some prejudice involved as the RHPS is part of my history. I watched this in college, including all of the audience participation involved. Regardless, this is a good film, but doesn't compete with the RHPS.

    I didn't know about Shock Treatment until a few months ago on Tumblr.
    It's not a Rocky Horror sequel if it doesn't reference things like Brad and Janet's sexual awakenings in the original. I can't see them as bored spouses. They'd be getting it on all the time - maybe even having orgies and such - owning their own BDSM club at the very least - with at least one child if not ten.
    A better plot for a sequel would've been one where it turns out Janet was pregnant at the end of the first film - after all, she had sex with two men on the same night and while we can only assume that with Dr. F it was unprotected, we know it was unprotected with Rocky. So she'd always be left wondering who was the biological father, but Brad would be the daddy. They could die while having sex in a car leaving their oldest child (now an adult) a letter explaining their origins. Somehow Dr. F and Rocky could return to life. (Alien/Sci-fi thing. It can happen.) And the bulk of the story could be the son/daughter trying to find out which one is their biological father - maybe throw in that the child is asexual and Dr. F being completely conflicted about that since he's all about the "sins of the flesh" and their (possible) kid would be all, "Yeah, that's boring. I'd rather go fishing!"
    End with a Maury Povich "You are/are not the father" scene.

    • @zwordsman
      @zwordsman 7 лет назад +4

      Jami JoAnne Russell alarge portion was because once that night was over they repressed a lot of it. but. remember that they both easily cheated on eachother with dr f. and thst aliens and crap are real. in the end theyre both emotionally and mentally crippled from it and cant process real life properly. the bored famoly thing was just the fake doctors diagnoses.
      that night is one reason why janet so readily adapted and loved being the center of everyones love again like that.
      that was the original intent but they were denied the rights to officially label it as a sequel when it was released but were allowed to reuse the twos names and semi officially make it the same judge
      ( with implications that the judges story parts in rocky are infact his show o. dtv before it farely took over dtv)
      but yeah. the intent was that no one came out of rocky ok. with tons of long lasting repercussions that they didnt work through and can really only be alright living with insanity together

    • @AzureVengence2788
      @AzureVengence2788 6 лет назад +2

      They easily could have explained this as a true sequel to Rocky Horror by pointing out that Brad being emotionally shut down and Janet being bored of being a "proper" housewife was all due to what happened during the first movie.

    Rocky Horror is my favourite film of all time so I had a bit of a high expectation on Shock Treatment. It... was bad, but one good thing I have to say about it is that the visual aspect is awesome (that's why I wish I hadn't watched it in like 480p). Lullaby is a great song and more people should know about it.
    About the other songs... eh... most of them I just pretend didn't exist.
