He will always be a super athletic dude with great improv ability but many people and these players talking still don’t understand the purpose of practice and that is sad. It shows how low vibrational our people have become and why international players are coming over here and beating US raised players in team basketball and fundamentals. One of the main purposes of practice is to get the team in rhythm and make sure everyone is able to have chemistry to win the game together. There will always be guys that are just naturally able to sync with others but that doesn’t mean others will sync with them if they aren’t able to spend time in practice together. That can make the difference between a championship team and a team with an AI type player that never makes it past the first round at best.

You're right. A guy who shot 30% (overall, not just from 3), turned the ball over 4 times per game, and played defense by gambling for steals and watching the other guy score whenever he wanted to could have been a LOT better if he had practiced. Literally every college player in the country could beat AI at HORSE. That's embarrassing for an NBA PG. Probably the worst MVP selection ever.
I thought AI was cool. We all did. Most of us still do. But he didn't care enough about the game to be great on the court. Aside from being one of the most clutch players ever (aside from MJ, AI should be taking that last shot), he was REALLY not very good. In today's game, he'd be a 6th man for a tanking team.
A PG who couldn't shoot, made his teammates worse, turned the ball over a lot, and couldn't play D even a little bit won MVP. Because he looked cool. Hats off to him, that's a hell of an achievement.

Practice isn't just for one player. Nobody on that team could emulate Iverson at practice. Basketball is a team sport and it requires people to know each others habits, it's about timing and spacing. Missing practice happens but it should never be due to a player being great. Synergy. Especially in the case of Iverson, the sixers didn't have another star. Even Iverson said he would miss practice cause he probably partied too late the night before.
Pro basketball is a team sport to a certain extent. Its not high school and its no college. If you are not a 1st or 2nd option then that means you are going to be limited to a very specific role. On a team with Melo and A.I. there's going to be a whole lot of iso ball going on so the only thing that you need to know about those two guys is where you need to be on the floor to not muck up the spacing when they are going iso and if you are a big playing with AI, understand that his speed and ability to blow past the first two levels of defense is going to give you lanes to the offensive glass so some of his misses at the rim will be easier to putback then him passing the ball directly to you. You don't need 3 months of camp to figure that out.
You only need that if you’re a team player. AI was a SG in a PG body. A high useage low efficiency chucker who over dribbled.
He was a one-man bad offense who was carried by the spectacular defense his teammates played.

That was not the space and pace era and defenders could still defend and make physical contact. Coaches had not bought into the 3 point shot and offenses were built around hunting mid range jumpshots and throwing the ball down to the block. A lot of AI's misses created easy scoring chances for his role players because he had an incredible amount of gravity and many times sucked 3 or 4 defenders to the cup trying to collapse on him. Use context before you spew B.S.
My son was like that with football. From age 5 he was just better than the rest and absolutely hated going to practice. It frustrated his coaches and I was confused until I realized this was just his way and really - he didn't need practice (LMAO) - he loved the weight room tho. He would show up for a game; rush for 100 or more yards and 2-3 TD's a game and barely break a sweat. Practice would depress him but his teammates voted him a Captain so he had obligations to uphold. His senior season in HS was his last - he had offers and visits (Univ. of South Carolina, UVA, Va. Tech and others) but said his heart wasn't there anymore for football. He had excellent grades and was accepted to 16 schools for academics - he went to college got two degrees and is now doing well in the IT field. "Practice? We talking bout PRACTICE!!!?"

After hearing those stories about staying out late drinking every night, all I can think about when I hear AI’s name now is “missed potential”. Imagine if he had Kobe’s work ethic.

A lot of those naturally gifted players didn’t have the discipline. If ai or shaq would’ve been disciplined no telling how high their ceiling was
I think this speaks more of the coaching he had at Philly than his “need” for practice. A coach is much like a teacher. If a student is excelling and it’s all coming easy to them your job is to try to make it more challenging for them so they can continue to stay engaged and continue to improve. Without that the student gets bored and it all feels pointless. Had AI had a coach he trusted and who challenged him (much like John Thompson did for him in Georgetown) then AI could have probably been a champion. Look at people like Kobe & Lebron… two guys who are known for practicing overtime but I guarantee their practices challenge them and help them improve on those little things they aren’t perfect at. Hence why they are multi time champions. AI has to take some of this blame as well because self discipline is important to have but most have to learn what that is. I learned in the military and without the mentors I had there I wouldn’t be as disciplined as I am now.
Nikola Jokic does the same thing AI does and he shows up and balls out. Joker approaches it the same way. It's his job and he works hard for a long season. But you have to catch up to the fun you missed

AI is 1 of the best and he had often good reasons to do what he did, but... if he did those small things: like practice (not even for him but to better his team, to communicate, to come off a bench, to do drills if only to strengthen the bond, he acted like he was too good for it. Although that was exactly what Mike and Kobe did, and had to... too). Sometimes its not you, sometimes you gotta see it as a Phil. Just an Ace wont get it done. Even if youre him. If you were watching the nba then, you’d know he had a ton of off the court issues and didn’t retire on his own terms. He had a great career. I’m only saying that if he did take the game more seriously, was more disciplined, bought in, etc., he could have easily played as long as some of his peers from that class. Nash, Kobe, JO, Ray, just to name a few, are guys that all still had a lot left in the tank by the time that AI was out of the league. I have PLENTY of perspective on how long NBA careers are

Not everyone can do a Kobe or Lebron and do 20 plus years in the league. AI didn’t want to accept a role playing role on any team like say a Chris Paul; or Vince Carter just to last longer; so his superior natural talent held up for 14 years which is amazing considering the young hungry talent that enters the league yearly with each new NBA draft. He was pushed out the league yes that’s because he still wanted the superior treatment when his talent and mileage could no longer support what he thought his level was still at; like an old boxer that thinks he still has it and fights way longer than he should; so yes the league had to push AI out; his talent was no longer superior and he wanted to be treated like such. If he did not want to accept a lesser role on a team which he did not; and if he did not want to walk away gracefully and respectfully retire like say a Carmelo Anthony then the way it ended for him was the only way it could have ended
