  • In Ayurveda, the ancient wisdom of Maharshi Vagbhat emphasizes the delicate balance of the body’s internal energies, known as the Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), and their profound impact on health. The digestive fire, or Agni, plays a central role in maintaining optimal health, particularly in the processes of digestion and elimination. According to Ayurveda, chilled water disrupts the natural functioning of Agni and can lead to a variety of health issues, including constipation.
When cold water is consumed, it causes the stomach and digestive tract to contract, reducing the warmth required for proper digestion. This cooling effect slows down the process of digestion, causing food to remain undigested in the stomach and intestines. In Ayurvedic terms, this results in the formation of Ama (toxic waste), which can accumulate and block the channels of the body, hindering the natural flow of nutrients and waste.
As the digestive fire weakens, the Vata dosha, which governs movement in the body, can become disturbed. Vata imbalance, especially when aggravated by cold, can cause dryness, contraction, and sluggishness in the bowels, leading to constipation. Moreover, cold water decreases the body’s ability to absorb moisture and nutrients from food, which contributes further to dehydration and the inability to expel waste efficiently.
Maharshi Vagbhat advises maintaining the natural warmth of the body by drinking water at a moderate, lukewarm temperature. Lukewarm water helps to strengthen Agni, supports proper digestion, and ensures smooth elimination. By consuming warm water, we align ourselves with the body's natural rhythms and prevent the accumulation of toxins, thereby promoting healthy bowel function and overall well-being.
Therefore, chilled water, according to Ayurveda, should be avoided, especially for those prone to digestive disorders or constipation. It is always best to drink water at a temperature that supports the body’s inherent warmth and digestive power, ensuring a harmonious balance between body, mind, and spirit.
