Age of Empires 4 plays it safe a bit too often, but really excels when it wanders outside of its very traditional comfort zone. The expansive campaigns and offbeat factions like the Mongols and the Rus are major highlights, even when it loses some of its sharpness to a small unit cap, frustrating pathfinding, and relatively unimpressive graphics for a 2021 game. I've been enjoying it a lot as a whole, but it also sometimes makes me question how much room I have in my life for this age-old formula these days, when real-time strategy has come such a long way thanks to the innovations of other franchises.

@@tij4293 You buy Aoe2 if you want the Series' best, you buy AoE3 if you want something weird, but fun and you get AoE4 if you want a healthy mix between the two

It's probably because IGN staff are probably tired of the torrential downpour of hate and negativity when they review anything highly anticipated and give it a 7 or lower, from people who haven't even played the game yet

Age of Empires Series is a game that should not lose its simplicity. That is how it wins our heart.
Absolutely can't wait for them to use this to build upon for Age of Mythology 2!!

It's playing it safe because they didn't want a repeat of the reaction AoE3 received.
The fan base didn't want an AoE game that strayed too far from what they think an AoE game should be.
AoE3 was ironically my favorite. It's a shame most people don't like change.

Casuals tend to enjoy aoe3 and AoM more. Multiplayer fiends always lean towards aoe2.
Kind of how a casual smash brothers player will play the new one, and the nerds all still play melee.

It’s almost like every comment on every video says the exact same thing regardless of how they review it.
He clearly really liked the game but had some small problems with it, but everything about it was solid. 8 matches up with that. Great game, well made, just not something particularly special.

Im hoping we can get a new Rise of Nations one day that was like the original.
Might be my favorite RTS ever. Its either that or AOE2. Shame it was never revisited.
The second game was better imo. Many memories playing both games!

It's true- there is little innovation, but what is there makes for an excellent AoE title. And lower graphic fidelity just means more people can play.

Exactly, my computer could run the minimums if the graphics where just a little bit less heavy, if they ever break up the single player/ multiplayer experience while reducing graphic requirements then a huge portion of the first 2 games would join the ranks of AO4 player base, and as long as we have a solid wifi connection it shouldn’t slow down the multiplier games either, even restricting low performance PCs from playing 4 v 4 would be acceptable imo lol
It’s mounting reviews like this one (to a degree) that often pressure developers to continually change a winning formula to something unrecognizable in a sequel. It’s why indie game developers and fan funded projects often make a name for themselves by releasing “spiritual successor games”. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.
Thank goodness for software developers that you now have independent and hoppy enthusiast reviewing games now with constructive feedback and in-depth look that can last up to an hour on some videos.

When a pokemon game releases the only praise we see is how the age old formula still works. But here, for some reason it is deemed a negative aspect.

There aren't really any competitors to Pokemon innovating to contrast against Pokemon.

Straying too far from the classic formula for RTS games is a death sentence. Just look at Command and Conquer 4: Tiberium Twilight. I'm all too happy to have an "old school" RTS. We RTS fans still play the old classics to this day because they're still a ton of fun.
C&C 4 didn't just stray too far. It was one of the worst games ever made.
Tiberium Twilight is an extreme case. Doesn't mean that the genre shouldn't innovate. Look at warcraft 3 which had enormous success. It's different from traditional RTS games, but it's still very much a RTS and a favorite among many. If no innovation is made the genre will be dead before you know it and we'll get no more additions.
Dawn of War 3 comes to mind.
Hopefully Relic get another go at that series, and 'pLaY It sAfE'. Then we'd actually be happy lol.
It’s the complete opposite, this stagnation is why the RTS genre is pretty much dead. No change no initiative ideas will cause things to fail.
That´s the thing. They changed a lot of things with AoE3 and we didn´t like it, and we made it known loud and clear, so now I´m REALLY glad that they went back to the AoE2 formula.
Big, big yikes. This review made no sense. Giving it an 8 after all of what you've said has undone everything you've just mentioned. Completely skipped over important deatils - no mention of hotkeys? No review of the campaigns? What's up with the 1080p, highly compressed video? Run the game maxed out in 4K, then critique the graphics... So many issues with this review.

@@LWT1331 and the look of the game with maxed out settings being unimpressive. Just because the RUclips video is in a specific resolution, doesn't mean that the reviewer played in that resolution.

Nonsense. They could offer different graphics options to cater to folks with old machines, just like every other game does.
@@spacewarlord6583 That only works to an extent. There are many games where even on the lowest settings the game runs like garbage. Optimizing across a huge spec range is really difficult. Much easier to downgrade the visuals. It really does look like the graphics cater to specific mid/low range specs. It is dissapointing that the graphics weren't next level

Just been playing this today and the reviewer is correct, if you dont babysit them constantly they chase after units leaving your base exposed or archers attack knights at close range and get slaughtered.

One of the main reasons the Age of Empires was a success was because it could run on almost any system. These games arent supposed to stress your system they are designed to scale very well. Ignoring that would have shown a lack of respect for the series' core values.
Bad graphics cannot be motivated by a "core value" that the game should be able to run on a shitty computer, just make it an option.
imagine saying that incredible graphics is disrespectful to the "core values" of the series.

It's pretty impressive to see this series keep evolving till today. 24 years is a pretty amazing for a video game series. Age of empires 2 was what got me hooked up on this video game series
Then you're in luck, as it resembles AoE2 the most, with bits taken from AoE3
There is literally NO evolution in age of empires 4 , wtf are you talking about???? This is literaly a reskined aoe2. Aoe 1 to 2 to 3 each had improvements on each front with Aoe 3 having the biggest leap in graphics and lots of other things. This has absolutely nothing new for it being so many years since last one.

Relic didnt push the boat out enough... Do you blame them, imagine the backlash, not like they have been on the receiving end of Dawn of War 3 feedback.
Dawn of war turned into a MOBA though and that was just a an attempt at "Expanding the Audience" aka money-grabs.
Give us Rise of Nations 2, Microsoft. They're sitting on the rights to the franchise.

They have a few. For example Luke Reilly covers racing game reviews here, and he does a great job.
For anyone who has played Age of Empires 2 two decades ago this is game is amazing. For the zoomers please move back to fortnite.

Game Features that would make this game GREAT:
1 Bigger maps like 5x the huge map size
2 Better Diplomacy (Ally, Vassals, Tribute State, Militar Alliance, Commercial Alliance ecc)
3 1000 population limit
4 A proper Map Editor easy to use
5 Heroes and Generals with historical references
6 A Family member Tree for our empires
7 Civilization Creation and Customization
DLC's #1-7 will probably fix that.
The movement of troops is really bad. Why couldn't they improve this after all these years??

minimum system requirements are "Intel HD 520 or AMD Radeon RX Vega 11"
They are targeting this game for the masses.
What's weird, though is that an integrated Vega 11 GPU is like 3x as powerful as that Intel.
Well that's the weird thing, the minimum graphics card required is indeed "low end", but the required processor isn't, which is puzzling.
For example, my five year old Dell (which cost €400) with a HD 530 integrated graphics card meets the minimum requirements, but my i3 processor doesn't - the game requires an i5?! 🤔😯😀🤘 .
Why do you even compare this game to a total war game? Of course the graphics and game play will be vastly different as they are two different type of games... sigh
Truth is, RTS genre did not really evolve and its golden age is gone, propably forever.
Total War reference is spot on - this game/genre evolved, introduced new features and now, it is worth of 2021 tech.
RTS games abandoned most of their unique features like huge armies (cossacks) multiple ages (empire earth, rise of nations) and uses same of very similar pattern in every game - 3-8 factions, 2-5 ages. Build, uprgade, defeat enemies. Even the unique things like leveling cities and unlocking uprgades from AoE3 were abandoned (cuz most people did not like them).
Total war should not be mentioned it’s not a rTS
How do you know that most people don't like the city leveling in AoE3?
@@LWT1331 Well, most people prefer AoE 2 system, and when they removed deck unlocking in AOE3 Definitive Edition, people were mostly happy about that.
@@lorddiethorn It is mentioned to show how Turn-Based strategies evolved, got better, bigger, more complex AND kept their playerbase. RTS are same... or worse.

Why would they want to take any chances with new gameplay mechanics? AoE3 tried new things and people cried and pouted and said "b-b-b-but...I just wanted AoE2.5...". Now they're releasing AoE2.5 and people are saying "b-b-b-but...I wanted something new and different...".

Map creators for games sometimes came out after the release of the main game. As long as they don't wait too long to do it, it should be fine since everyone getting the game is still working through the campaign and existing maps.
The game is not that great. A lot of weird designs choices here
