    On the graphic aspect, I think the pre-rendered graphic on AOE 2 offers a realistic model and texturing. When the game goes full 3D rendering, the details are limited by polycount. AOE 2: DE really nails it for me.

    Its insane to me that before AOE2:DE came out, I finally got a PC again for gaming (had been on console for all my life basically), and I immediately thought of AOE2. Im a shooter type gamer for the most part and this was at the height of Fortnite so i mainly got my PC for that. But the first game I downloaded and played wasnt FN, it was a masterpiece of a game called Age of Empires 2. Even without the remastered version, I was in love once again with a game I first played with my father(a huge history/war nerd) when I was about 5 years old. Im just continually amazed by AOE2... DE might be the greatest remastered game I've ever played, as they simply updated the graphics in a way that didnt change any of the feel of the game, and only made subtle QoL ones basically. But even if they never released DE, an extremely healthy player base would STILL be playing this game. Yeah I know the HD version is what people have been playing since 2013 or whatever and that helped a ton, but I would 1000% still play the actual original almost 25 year old game. My point is, AOE2 if simply one the GREATEST most replayable game across the board of all time. It's astounding how perfect a game they made so long ago, it makes me want to cry. Im sure many others have memories of this game from their childhood and if youre like me, years from now whenever my dad is no longer here, I will play this game and think of all the great memories both fun and educational I had with him because of this game.

    The changes in projectiles are a bummer in my opinion, along with lack of hill bonuses.
    With more advanced tech, they could actually make a proper calculations based on height differences, but nope...
    Same with homing arrows - I hate excessive micro, but in terms of arrows and siege equipment, it makes sense to be able to dodge. And basically homing/hitscan attack could be made into a unique thing for gunpowder infantry with a fixed hit rate, for example.
    The point is - with so many years between those game, there should not be even a contest, every single aspect should be objectively better... It is not.
    There are also couple of other things that rub me the wrong way about AOE4:
    The art direction - something feels off about the colour palette. It feels washed out, yet team colours are insanely vibrant, creating weird, out of place contrast. The proportions, weirdly wobbly animations with exaggerated weapons to supposedly make them more distinguishable - it has a subtlety of a sledgehammer and ironically makes it... less clear. I noticed that team colours on units appear to be overdone, which combined with animations being more wobbly, makes unit groups turn into incomprehensible blobs.
    And the UI... It is functional but it looks like something taken from a generic mobile game - it feels out of place and has all the character of a slab of iron. It is oversimplified for clarity, yet it loses all the style for this. It is like those corporate logos getting overly simplified to near nothingness - and this UI kind of runs along this line.

  • @Cckeen413
    @Cckeen413 2 года назад +12

    Unfortunately I don't agree with the micro management thought. This game sure loses micro from moving units back and forth to dodge arrows (ridiculous like u said) but gains micro by the much more realistic aim of army setup. Before I could just sit there 1 or 2 types of units. And win a aoe 2 game. Aoe 4 requires much more analysis on the battlefield while moving the correct rock paper scissors in correct areas. So you still gotta micro manage just in a different way. And people fight much earlier!
    Before only pros would play Fuedal properly. now I play a 1v1 and 50% of games don't go past castle age. And ends generally before castle. So while your microing your army your also doing the pre game of building your economic side at the EXACT same time or you lose. Before AOE2 was fastest one to perfect economic supply and just mass army. Games where always IV and long IV.

    This guy hasnt played Age of empires 3 right? Because almost all of what he said was done in Age 3, a game 15-12 years old. The method of building something to age was a thing that asian dynasties could do. The 3D graphics were also in Age 3, this Age 4 looks exactly like Age 3 but with Age 2 civs and time setting. The homming projectiles were in Age 3 as well. Even your bonus point, which is something good about Age 4, was in Age 3, thats why Age 3 innovated the most to the franchise. Conclusion: Age 4 doesnt evolve a sh*t, doesnt innovate, its just a "fan game" but most of the franchise fans are dissapointed, because we were expecting something new (idk, tanks, planes, gartling guns, WW1 rifles, WW2 obuses...)

    I'm interested, but not sure about buying right now, either. I probably will, because this game has been on my watch list for more than a year. But I play other games - MMO's, City Builders, outside the RTS Genre. While getting hardcore into RTS again is something I might do when I feel like I want a break from other stuff, it's not high on my priority list. RTS was my favorite genre back in the 2000's, but now my attention is split. At the same time, I've got the complete definitive editions of AOE II and III so I'm hesitant to buy yet another game. At a casual glance it honestly looks like - from a competitive multiplayer perspective - AOE II DE probably is and will remain the best game out of the bunch for a while. I don't want that to be true necessarily, but it really looks like this is where the biggest share of players ultimately stand. A few months after release, that could change. But AOE4 doesn't look like it is or will be worth a full exodus of the AOE 2 Community. And that's where it gets really muddy, because Microsoft did a great job of supporting AOE 2 DE in a way which makes it harder to sell AOE 4... which tells me that they fully expect all of these games to retain their own unique communities side by side. That's awesome, but also unprecedented. If true, it also gives me that much more cause to think that when I want to dive into AOE again, I might just stick to AOE 2 DE, or even AOE 3 which is in many ways also a beautiful game.

    I should've seen this coming, but I have trouble seeing units from green-brown backgrounds when the colours are Dark Green, any blue on water, brown on mountains/hills, and darker purples.
    I really don't like the art style. It is muddy and earthy when compared to its 3D ancestors like AOE3 and AOM. UI blends into the enviroment and doesn't pop with contrasting colours.
    I am trying to like the game enough to buy it, but failing this hard on basic RTS UI and enviroment details is just a massive turn off. I mean look at those unit portraits and projectile tracking, just disgraceful.

    I've never understood the Civ argument with AoE:2. Since every civ is roughly the same. You can master one civ in AoE2, and you pretty much mastered all of them. A literal, "You have seen one you've seen them all." situation. Compare this to Mythology, 3, and 4. You master one civ in those games. You're guaranteed to suck with the rest. Especially with AoE3.
    I swear watching people talk about the variety in the multiple samey AoE2 civs. Is like watching someone praise the variety you're given in a bag of M&Ms. 6 different colors, they all taste the same.

AOE 4 is very new and the verdict is still not done for it as yet, it still has a long way in terms of tweaking and updates before we know what it will be, but so far so it's a success. If you want to get into AOE start with AOE 2 DE, there is plenty of time to get into AOE 4 as am sure it will be the successor to AOE 2 for the future decades.. especially when you look at the pricing. I would wait for aoe4 price to drop before getting it. AOE 2 DE is about a third of that price for a more complete classic that still stands the test of time

    Got it so basically people don't like aoe 4 because it's new

    • @vivsavagex
      @vivsavagex 23 дня назад

      yep. people that kept playing 2 like 2 better. if you started with 4 you will like 4 better. basically across the board. people love their nostalgia and winning and they can win more with a game theyve been playing for 20 years. that simple

    AoE2 DE has the better graphic, animation, gameplay, immersion and sound. The things AoE4 makes better are countable by one hand...
    I mean, just look at a battle of 100 v 100 men. In AoE2 you have the FEELING of a real battle.

    I'd honestly really love it if they would scrap aoe 4 and just apply its graphics to Aoe 2

      This.......really setting AOE 4 in the medieval times was a giant mistake. Should have gone back to ancient times.

    As we get more technology the true effort in a game goes down. The 90s and early 2000s were definitely the golden age of story and mechanic driven games

    Personally for me AOE 2 is king and AOE4 is trash because aside from just the map and stretegy they are no evolution . Power or magical power , heroes , those upgrade to grind like in AOE 3 , you know ANYTHing and i really mean it ANYTHING that make a game different or not the same like MMORPG do (level , heroes stats) OBviously this should be balance if a 40 level player play someone level 2 , you are all level 2 . HEroes level well that is skill if he dont die and can lever but shouldnt be overpower like i have a hero level 10 i win .
    Talent Tree , Direction or God worshipping Like yin age of mythology , you can adapt per stategy i think that was a very good idea.
    But here we are with NOTHING , yes if we have nothing no power no tree no level no hero no absoluty no fucking 1 thing in like 1 millenia , AOE 2 is the best game
