I came across this song by watching the indian series "The Family Man". It was played during the ending credits of the fifth episode, and I got caught immediately so I decided to dig a bit. And BOOM the video is as dope as the song! Great find here. Respect from France.
I don't know Malayalam, and I stumbled upon this song. At the end of the song, my soul is gasping for breath. How much more beautifully the darkness can be shown? This is a true masterpiece. I believe it showed how society treats the people who are different from the cliches and stereotypes. This song will stay inside me for a very long time.

My full support to thaikudam bridge.. I could see good hearted people saying not to fight each other for a song.. But this is not a war but to show respect towards orginals and the artists who spent their energy in creation.. Thaikudam didn't have a movie script to get a thought on creating this beautiful song. I wonder how they got the spark. And it's sad that even though everyone knows thaikudam, people never try to hear their orginals. It's because of our movie based music culture.
Not only are the chord changes and the Raag a direct lift. The whole thematic element, tension build up, adoption of the Kathakali theme, the similarities don’t end. It’s obvious as the sky is blue that not just the song, one could even stretch the whole premise of the film was inspired by this music video.

I am a kannadiga. I love this original version a lot more. I thank Kantara team for pulling me to this beautiful, mesmerizing, heavenly piece of music and art. I Appreciate it. The end in the video is very emotional. This musical band deserves wide recognition, award and honour. This fusion music is unique and first of its kind .

This gave me equally goosebumps and tears like when I watched it for first time in Kantara. Even though I do not understand Malayalam. But expressions is a language which doesn't need any scripture. The kid in this video brought out all the expressions so strongly that, I couldn't watch without crying. Music is simply mesmerizing.
Finallyyy! The search is over. I heard this years ago but I couldn't remember the name (as I'm a North Indian only speaking Hindi and English). I spent so much time to find this masterpiece! Different names, different bands what not! I'm speechless and almost on the verge of crying when I found the video again.
Even after being a malayali, i came to know about this song only after kanatara, i am really ashamed of my self. I never seen such a good meaningful combination of video and song.
@@rk-uh6lj there is a top comment from Joseph Vincent, on that thread you can find a comment from Mr Padmanabhan which explains the symbolism. In summary the kid is representing the mindshare of the traditional art form of kathakali, parents the artists nurturing the art and the last scene is lord Krishna appearing to the prayers (yellow golden color vesham) of the artists who cry for the future of kathakali. Whether kathakali will survive and grow or not is upto how much mindshare keralities give to it. If anyone is wondering what happens to the kid and why the video is perhaps shot in this haunting way to remind.
A very powerful subtext. A text becomes double strong when it suits to interpretations on different scales. For a marginal writer this is the story of people on the margins: dalits and blacks. For the cultural studies writer it is a story of the dying art form of kathakali in the never ending wait for Salvation. For a literature student this is a story told in the verses: inner turmoil of the tense characters written in lyrics. For a music lover this is a mystic raga: evoking strange pleasures, the one like the emotion of father holding the child in the first shot. For a painter, the face paint of red and black is aggression and that of green is serenity. For a theatre artist it is bhaava (facial expressions): the scene where even when artist was in roudra bhaava on stage and a kid was terrified, the family was smiling and looking him in awe. That moment defines the admiration for the actor. This work is going to define the parallel malayalam music world.
This music video has another level. It can be a metaphor for how western and commercial art forms are bullying and killing the traditional art forms. Think of the child as the traditional art form itself. How he is born out of love of the masters of the art form (his parents). The society which understands this art form, which is the village and old patrons, appreciates it. Whereas, the modern society (school going kids) make fun of it. When the child explains the art forms, some kids take interest in it just like how even now many modern kids find deep interest in traditional forms. But, some bullies and corrupted individuals (the tobacco smoking kids) will chase the art form until it falls in oblivion (the well). Where it becomes hidden and dies. Note that the bullies don't explicit kill it with their own hands. They just chase it away. The traditional art forms are just like a little child. Great care needs to be taken to protect it, to support it, otherwise it could just become lost and hidden forever. Brilliant piece of music and video by Thaikkudam Bridge.
Your perception is completely wrong The audience of any classical art form is numbered It won't have larger audience like pop It's about society in Kerala If you want to understand , know what theyyam is
I do agree. But I think the bullying is not exactly from western art. That’s an art like any other. It’s the commercial interests behind it that feel need to own the mindshare and wallet share bullying local arts and hollowing out the traditions with labels like “superstition” or “rudimentary” etc. Music for the masses also has to be somewhat reductive to be easy for everyone whereas the traditional art forms need some cerebral exercise to understand and appreciate. I hope we can revive some of these arts in india in where they used to travel and include the locals on a regular basis like a vibrant shared “lived experience” rather than something you have to go buy tickets for like a zoo or museum.

@@ytgy2581 yeah I am aware of this fact. The reason I also included mallu movies in my comment because after watching this song I felt like this should have got more views like varaha roopam but didn't. whats shocks me the most is how much comments we are getting from russia, bolivia and other european countries, thought all were just hyped around bollywood cringy dances and musics.....
the only issue is the theme that's shown here is wrongly depicted that small boy shown in this video will be having heavenly grace from the GOD... these traditional and spiritual folk dance peoples (who sacrifices most of the wordly pleasure just for invoking the divine forces within their physical body are indeed divine and they are not so easily susceptible by outsiders... these people live a highly spiritual, disciplined and truthful life, so that the divine forces may live within them...) So it's practically impossible to hurt or harm these people and whoever doing so will have to face the ultimate consciousness through the immediate punishments activated by the presiding Deity .... those harmed are mostly seen affected by some chronic disease and some violators are even seen vomiting blood and dies within no time.. So what shown in the video is totally unacceptable and totally untrue That's why such songs get's unnoticed Kantara showed the divine forces in it's true form and that's why the movie got widely accepted and acclaimed

shivani suresh You can interpret many things from this video. 1. Caste oppression 2. Gender issues 3. Bullying or Ragging 4. Downfall of native art forms. 5. Political killings 6. Drugs among youth The list goes on when you watch the video again and again.
"I feel like the child represented the future for the art form Kathakali. In the scene where he is forced to smoke the cigg, it shows how classical forms now are being polluted with unnecessary things such as overmakeup and bad fusions. If we do not conserve those traditions they too fall in to the well and be hidden and never found" Such an irony when I saw this comment under a video which tries to blend what you call "pazhaye art forms" or "classical forms" with western tones. I reckon you found the 'pollution' to be less striking here? :D
However spectacular the video is, it fails if the song doesn't substantiate it. This is where Thaikkudam proves time and again that they are one of the bests in the scene. Such quality theme, visuals and production. The song which begins with a lazy Senavati sound alike violin melody is followed by a the solid riff. Vipin absorbs the right mood through is voice and gracefully sets the context. Through the mid of the song, the snare build up followed by the guitars, taken ahead by the chenda and the kombu - can't ask for more. The whole feel of the song, the chromatic shift between the dhaivathams, perfectly resonating with the mood of the theme from what I felt as the trauma of the bullied outcast. From what people have stereotyped as a "cover band" (personally I don't think doing covers is bad), Thaikkudam has gone a long way proving what quality is through it's powerful originals. More power to you. More power to independent artists. PS: Please upload lyrics :)
Loved reading your thoughts on the track. The theme is open for interpretation by anybody who watches it. Having said so, would just like to add here that the lyrics is sort of an ode to Kathakali and the issues the art form as such, faces at present! Do watch the song again with Kathakali in mind and you will unlock a new perspective... :)

To those who haven't heard of this band before, this is not the first time their music is being used in other shows, but they have always been credited before. Sudha Kongara did this for Soorarai Pottru and the Family Man team acquired the rights of their songs, 'Aarachar' and 'Navarasam' and used it for their web series. This is what the Kanthara team should have done.
True.. Many filmmakers have used their music with due credits and remuneration.. Kantara team should have requested legally to use the Music. Now they must compensate thaikuddam bridge for illegal use.

@@satheesht Your explanation of the ending is better than the others I saw so far.
Naatil evideya
Amazing @appu - Yes, this is art, amazing art and I love the way you have interpreted.

Can't watch the video more than once. Too heart wrenching. Now I just listen
Don't overthink it , art forms change with time , as preferences changes , nothing wrong about it
Your perception is completely wrong
The audience of any classical art form is numbered
It won't have larger audience like pop
It's about society in Kerala
If you want to understand , know what theyyam is
Absolutely
Your intuitive and experiential perception is so right

@@appi4868 I mean it's been 5 years dude...... If it is noticed at that time, just imagine the euphoria it would've been created.
the only issue is the theme that's shown here is wrongly depicted
that small boy shown in this video will be having heavenly grace from the GOD... these traditional and spiritual folk dance peoples (who sacrifices most of the wordly pleasure just for invoking the divine forces within their physical body are indeed divine and they are not so easily susceptible by outsiders... these people live a highly spiritual, disciplined and truthful life, so that the divine forces may live within them...)
So it's practically impossible to hurt or harm these people and whoever doing so will have to face the ultimate consciousness through the immediate punishments activated by the presiding Deity .... those harmed are mostly seen affected by some chronic disease and some violators are even seen vomiting blood and dies within no time..
So what shown in the video is totally unacceptable and totally untrue
That's why such songs get's unnoticed
Kantara showed the divine forces in it's true form and that's why the movie got widely accepted and acclaimed

In the scene where he is forced to smoke the cigg, it shows how classical forms now are being polluted with unnecessary things such as overmakeup and bad fusions. If we do not conserve those traditions they too fall in to the well and be hidden and never found"
Such an irony when I saw this comment under a video which tries to blend what you call "pazhaye art forms" or "classical forms" with western tones.
For people who are perceptive and have seen the world, each viewing will bring out new meaning.
Keep up the good work.
Varaha Roopam is the best song of Kantara, I cannot listen to it more and more.. which means Navarasam is the master piece of a master piece.. Being a Kannadiga I always support the original music composer, Kanatara team should have given credits or pay the remuneration for not giving credits.
Navarasam team never asked for the remuneration...They only need credit for the music....
Brothers all these are silly issues they making hype there is similarity between this n Varaha roopam but cannot say it a stolen we may say this may be inspired or influenced for that song both the songs theme n lyrics are totally different why they are making it big issue... for three weeks since kantara release they didn't find it is copied n now after that films high collection n success across worldwide they are saying it's copied is this make any sense

I wanted to be neutral in both movies since they are not just movies these are emotions and spiritual. I wish both teams well deserved appreciations….. love from Tamilnadu.

Even Rishab Shetty used Thykoodam's music before in one of his movie.
True.. Many filmmakers have used their music with due credits and remuneration.. Kantara team should have requested legally to use the Music. Now they must compensate thaikuddam bridge for illegal use.
I did not find any similarities in these 2 songs. This is just a way to gain publicity by this band and nothing else.

As a Kannadiga I say, this is original version and feel so happy to listen to this. Yes, its signature tune is very much copied in Varaha Roopam. Ajneesh should have given credit at the initial moment. I enjoyed the Varaha Roopam with that Nadaswaram as well. Thaikkudam Bridge team thank you for such a great composition. Love.
May be ur not kannadiga
Whether I am kannadiga or maliyali us not the count. It is the music of Karnataka Sangeetha co claim or patient claimed from Purandara Dasa and followers. Similarities a common if you come across classical musicians they may give many like this. Is it possible to sue this band since they have used Carnatic music with out permission of Karnataka people? Music is to share and bring joy to the listeners. This band itself copied western heavy metal arrangements from western music to be honest I don’t know what ethics they have to talk about copyright…
@@gspkmr both are completely different when it comes to art form and music composition. Indian singers are singing english songs do they get sued?no they don't whereas when you are singing a song with the exact same composition the original makes have all the right to sue. And even the kannada remake of this also have western instruments your point is completely irrelelevant.
