MLV was undoubtedly one of the best in our inimitable Carnatic music tradition : An unselfish guru's unselfish sishya. Together they produced the brilliant ones like Tanjavur S Kalyanaraman. I am here in Brooklyn staying with my daughter Lakshmi Narayan Kumar who is having an open heart surgery at the very young age of 32. As I do whatever little I can to prepare her mentally ready for this arduous recuperation post surgery a great rasika friend Dr Chandramouli from Bangalore dispatched this delightful audio for my mental peace. Peace it brings as I listen to this 1957 rendering of Todi which her guruji polished by listening to nadaswara vidwan such as Rajarathinom Pillai and the likes. Now she is doing justice to his lessons. Pranams to Gee-yeN-Bee.(GNB himself as a top English literature major brought to our attention the similarity in the ringing sound of his own initials all said in one continuous flow to (Arnold) " TOYNBEE " !!!!! One must never forget the fact that besides a great singer she was a lady of big heart for her friends and pupils too. This is a record from the Radio Ceylon kutcheri. Once when she was touring the then Ceylon something unaccepted such as a fire or flood or even some civil disobedience(I don't remember the exact circumstance of the mishap)happened that forced her to rush to the airport for a quick return trip home. She had to gather her belongings in a hurry. Safe back home she looked dejected. Why? She did not have time for shopping for surprise Ceylonese gifts -- which no one in Madras possessed -- for her countless friends and students. Such was her big heart. Most of the time from foreign she came home to Madras penniless as all her fees were spent on gifts for others. Her neighbors in Madras were the Travancore dancing sisters: Lalita, Padmini and Ragini. As their career was taking off MLV would take time off from her own busy schedule to vocally accompany them on stage -- free of charge. Having the like of MLV on corner of a stage where she was not even visible(Imagine the big heart she displayed by willing to cede the limelight to unknown artistes just in an attempt to boost their careers!) helped the Travancore Sisters with a great dancing career. Such early success leapt them into big screen where they earned big money and fame. Aha ... the swarams are such a delight. What control of voice modulation, brisk pace without overwhelming us ... her guruji's imprints all over. Great vidushi, a great soul, pranams to her Naryanakurup Kanthikumar/ Brooklyn/ NY/USA/ May 14, 2016

Superb Alapana followed by the Krithi by MLV Amma ! Thamathamen Swami Ragam Todi 8th Mela Adi talam Papanasam Sivan Krithi Papanasam Sivan (1890-1973), poet-composer extraordinaire, expressing his impatience in no uncertain terms. ‘What is the delay?’ he demands of his Lord Murugan. ‘Enough of this worm like life’, ‘Enough of your games’, ‘I cannot bear anything anymore’. His words are strong and demanding. At times he even sounds threatening ‘This won’t help you, the way you do not show grace on me!’. One would like this wonderful saakhya bhavam shown by Papanasam Sivan, this treating of God as a near and dear friend. He acknowledges Him as Lord, he bows to Him, but he demands Grace as a right just as you would of a friend, with no overt obsequiousness. It makes God so near somehow..someone you can argue with, make demands, even pick a fight with! Why this delay in helping this lone man? Who else is my support? Even when I bow at your lotus feet, where even the Lord of the Earth, Brahma and Indra pay homage, why this delay? Enough, enough, this worm like life! Enough of your games! Raga Thodi 8th mela Alias: todi Aro: S R1 G2 M1 P D1 N2 S Av: S N2 D1 P M1 G2 R1 S Todi is the pride of our system of music, the imposing gamakas, stunning brighas all dazzle with all their glory in Thodi. When delivered well, a Thodi piece can lift any concert to sublime heights. The notes present in this raga are Sadja, Suddha Rishabha, Sadharana Gandhara, Suddha Madhyama, Pancama, Suddha Dhaivata, and Kaisiki Nishada. Todi evokes karuna and bhakthi rasa-s. The melakarta name for this scale is Hanumathodi. Bhairavi Thaat in Hindustani is the Carnatic Thodi scale. Carnatic compositions abound in this fertile raga and Thyagaraja’s contribution to this raga is invaluable. Thyagaraja’s ‘Kaddanuvariki’, ‘Koluvamaragadha’, ‘Raju Vedala’, and ‘Dasarathi’, among others are glorious compositions while Dikshitar’s ‘Sri Krishnam Bhaja’, ‘Dakshayani’ and ‘Kamalambike’ are pillars of strength. Shyama Sastri uses the pleading quality in this raga to his advantage in compositions like ‘Raave himagiri’ and ‘Ninne Nammi’. Tamil compositions in this raga include ‘Karthikeya’ and ‘Thamadam en swami’ of Papanasam Sivan, timeless in their passionate lyrical appeal. Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi can be sung in Thodi with great aplomb owing to the numerous possibilities its notes hold. In film music, Thodi has been used sparingly. Its complexities have been handled only by the best musical minds and to keep the character of such a raga intact is indeed a daunting task.

Have heard recording of her guru GNB sing the same kriti in one katcheri some years later in Bombay. Yes, MLV style very much resembles her mentor
Excellent. Reproduction of GNB's rendering in MLV's voice.MLV alone could do that. Wonderful Melodious singing of a very, very high quality.
