  • The Royal Australian Air Force's Mirage fighter fleet had largely been replaced by the F18 Hornet, so Channel 9 light-heartedly sent a buyer to check out the second-hand Mirages.
With thanks to Australia's Channel 9 current affairs program "A Current Affair", which screened this on the 4th of October 1988.

I recall watching the F-111 and MIrage at a Richmond Air Show back in the late 80s. Hornets were just arriving and were the new toy on the block. Good times.

@@MondoRockable We may have been at the same air show. I remember they had a Hornet and Mirage in a turning competition to highlight the differences in turn performance, which were substantial.

In the 80's I went to a school positioned at the end of the Darwin airport runway. Before the RAAF had other runways at their disposal across the Topend. We were so lucky to see many of the old school RAAF aircraft fly only 100 meters above us. F1-11's, , Caribou, C-130, brand new FA-18 Hornets, visiting US aircraft like the Phantoms, F-14's and the behemoth that is the B-52. And of course our own Mirages. The Mirage would scream over Darwin. As a kid I thought they were the closest thing to what i see as a paper plane. A triangle but with a bucket full of horse power.. Wish I had a spare 3 mill.

I spent a bit of time at Woomera when the Mirages were being collected and "stored" prior to sale. One of a few RAAF Edinburgh based Air Traffic Controllers looking after the airfield at the time. Remember the last flight of the last Mirage there as well. Great to see a light hearted view of the time there. Thanks for posting.
