  • Rare footage and untold stories of the history of Del Mar Skate Ranch unfold in part 1 of SPOTS. Del Mar Skate Ranch was one of the most influential skate parks in the entire world, nurturing a group of skaters who made their mark in skate history and originated many of the tricks you see today. In part one you will see rare footage and photos of Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Kevin Staab, Christian Hosoi, Dave Swift, Grant Brittain and many more ripping in the early years of the park.
Behind every skate trick ever done, is a place or "spot" where it happened. Learn about these famous SPOTS that have influenced skateboarding just as much or more than the individuals who skated them.

I still can't believe that not one of those California skateparks survived. I'm from Boston and I still dream about all those parks from that time period and I never got a chance to skate any of them. I can only imagine what the locals felt like. I wish someone would build replicas of these parks. Vans has done a good job with the combi.

To bulldoze a place like that is criminal. To think of all of the big names that have skated there and all that's there now seems to be a car park?
    A real tragedy.

I mean it would be awesome if it were still here but if you were the owner back then and you find out that kids are hopping the fence and not paying, and they poop in your office, what motivation would you have for keeping the park around?

As a 3 year member of the Skate Ranch (84-87), I can say my best memories were there. The Hawk vs Hosoi battles in the contests and just cruising the park.. The Keyhole was where the all the bad a**es skated, you knew you were it when you dropped in and was able to do something other that stall out or bail. The parks today are cool but, will never be compared to the Ranch!

I think that is how all of us locals felt when The Turf in Wisconsin was dozed. It was for me a heavy, sinking feeling, and the sadness of knowing that it's not going to be the same without it. There was nothing at all around us like it. I still miss that place.
Skating will always be changing and adapting, but certain spots are immortal. Del Mar seemed like one of those places.

Keyhole was the first place I dropped in vert, the left side. When I got to the other side I hit the coping and nearly died. Our parents dropped us off and we'd skate for hours. The two pools next to Keyhole were sketchy as hell, but so much fun! I grew up idolizing Grant Brittain's photos, forgot he worked there!

I'll tell you now, because so many have asked why it closed. It was because of insurance & not being able to insure the park. In the end no one would insure it & because of county laws it had to be closed down. I'm not sure if anyone sued Del Mar Skate Ranch for damages, but that's the main reason. Funny it closed just before the big boom of skating from 1988. Anyway I'm proud to say I skated it & will never forget it.

Every park in California got dozed over insurance issues. Spring Valley(Skateboard Heaven), Oasis in Mission Valley, Home Ave Park, Carlsbad, Upland, Winchester ect..
DMSR was the only park left in the SD area but like all other, money and insurance laws here in Cali were too strict.
The best thing to ever happen is to label skateboarding an "extreme" sport and remove liability from the city and now there are parks everwhere. Too bad it didnt happen back then.

It was not cool to skate at all, it was considered a kids toy. We lived for the pics in the magazines to see what was going on and how to learn the new tricks. You were rebel thats for sure. All 3 parks closed in Va Beach so we built half pipes. It was awesome but man if I could have lived by a park like Del Mar or Upland.
