"The sky darkens, the air grows cold, and with it comes an eerie sense of dread. An uneasy feeling comes over Mario as he bears witness to a castle rising up from beneath the Mushroom Kingdom. Surely this is the work of Count Koopula and his band of misfits...
Do you have what it takes to topple the tyrant?
This rom hack is inspired by the early Castlevania series and attempts to channel the spirit of ‘NES difficulty’. It’s designed to be a throwback hack of sorts-with instant-death blocks, secrets, and familiar enemies familiar to fans of the franchise. Each level was designed with a custom graphics set and soundtrack, paying homage to the source material. Some sections offer tighter platforming than others without feeling cheap or unfair to the player. Most importantly, each level has a clear path forward, with the player never wondering where to go or what to do next. Fans of the Castlevania series know of its difficult nature and shouldn’t be surprised by any obstacles within the hack. To channel the concept of ‘NES difficulty’, this hack will not save until you complete all 6 levels, and a GAME OVER will result in the player having to start over."

I don't think I've liked a Mario hack more than this. Gameplay, visuals, music; everything I want in a Mario/Castlevania game is there.

One of the rare occasions when the Belmonts just couldn't be bothered.
An unofficial joint OST by Koji Kondo and the now-defunct Konami Kukeiha Club is something I didn't think I'd ever need, but thanks for proving me wrong.
This crossover is done really well, especially the soundtrack!

That boxart is spectacular. I want a Mario game where he looks just like that now.
The hacks and twists on familiar levels add a whole new challenge and excitement to the game.
The mashup of musical styles, imo, is the best part. Very clever.
Kudos to the composers and remixers for this one. nice to hear some of those Castlevania tunes again after a decade not being able to play (I only have one working optical console and one working ROM console!)

I love this style of graphic way better than the 3d cartoon plastic clay looks. Also like the darker themed look! Reminds me of earlier mario. I wish mario would have went more in the type of direction
The instant that Wicked Child started playing the second part (9:56) I knew it was a Hooded Edge remix, and gladly found that he was part of this project in the credits (21:56) ❤
PERFECT example of a well thought out "tough but fair". basic but nice thing here!
Missed opportunity: Make fireballs resource-based, every fire flower = 10 ammo.

The guy that made this rom is certainly a bloodlines fan, which is awesome because we don't frequently hear remixes of it's amazing soundtrack

The end credits version of Bloody Tears is amazing!
Really cool how the first level mimics world 1-1 of Super Mario Bros; and uses older sprites with the SMW engine. It actually threw me off for a second before seeing Mario throw the first koopa shell.
This is an awesome concept for a hack. Mario traversing the Castlevania landscape. Even the soundtrack is cool.
The crossover we don't deserve but got it anyway because it's awesome!

This reminds me of a PC game called Super Mario XP that I played as a little person. It was really fun, but also very, very hard to the little person that was me...
Excellent hack! Still, there are some details that can be improved, among them:
- The menu fonts are a little hard to read against the background.
- The breakable and holdable blocks are hard to distinguish from unbreakable ones (specially simce they change colors along the game).
- Going by the exit of the previous room, the starting positions of Mario and Bowser in the final boss battle should be mirrored.
Also, some graphics being 16 bit (the Goomba sprites, backgrounds here and there...) stand out when in conjunction of the 8 bit ones, though this is nitpicking. 😅 By the way, you could've made the credits à la Rondo of Blood, considering both the horse/Yoshi and the scrolling direction in both games.
Great work all around, I'll be on the look out for the sequel of this hack. 😎👍🏻
I like how the sprites look in this one, specially mario, all badly animated but it looks funny in a good way.
Super Mario World is a Metroidvania now.
No, it was obviously a classic Castlevania influence. However, I'd love the idea of a Mario Metroidvania
'Metroidvania' means that there is a 2D open world, like in Metroid, and a combat system based around melee attacks and special weapons/spells, like in Castlevania.
New bosses to see for me and OMG the backrounds are incredible 🎉 the music is also nice and I love the mixes in the pixels from NES and SNES ❤

I think it's cheating that you can't fireball the medusa heads but other than that I'm liking it
It looks like you can't exactly interact with any of the actual Castlevania enemies. They're immune to fireballs, and if you try to stomp'em, you take a hit instead. That...sucks serious whale balls. Should be able to deal with them just like the Mario enemies.
What are they, a cross between a Bullet Bill and a Spiny, slowed to half speed?
This reminds me a lot of that one Mario + Castlevania PC game from the late 90s/Early 2000s.

This hack's version of Castlevania 3's stage 1 theme and Reincarnated Soul makes them sound even more like Ys music than they already did.

This may well be the most professional ROM hack I've ever seen! Aside from the loosely-coupled franchise crossbreed, reused game mechanics and some borrowed sprites and themed music, this was really a unique production of it's own, with enough new elements and pizzazz to lose the status of a hack, in my opinion. Absolutely stunning graphics, riveting music and engaging level design. Beautiful!
