Checking the racing reference website on this event, the margin of victory for Fireball Roberts was 27 seconds; not quite as dramatic as what this film made it out to be.
Also of note in the race results: No caution. That's remarkable given the reliability, or lack of, for the cars of that era, with blown engines and tires going flat, many times resulting in wrecks.
Pole speed was at 156 mph; the 500 mile race average at 152.

Might have had something to do with the fact Petty was driving what appeared to be the least aerodynamic body style ever wheeled onto Daytona. Everyone one else was in the 60s; Plymouth was still mired in the 50s.

Pontiacs dominated in the 1962 season. A whole lotta change come 1963 with the Pontiacs losing their dominance and Ford taking over.
