How to Make a Paddle

- In this video I explain how I made my paddles for the cedar strip canoe I just built.
Steps
1. Cut your strips - I cut my strips to 1 ½” thick and various widths
2. Glue your strips - I used West System epoxy to laminate my strips because I had some left over but I would have been fine using Titebond 3 Wood Glue.
3. Plane down to 1 inch thick - If you don’t have a planer, google a local woodworker in your area and see if they will plane a paddle for $10
4. Draw your blade and handle shape half template - on cardstock, half for symetry
5. Cut it out! - with a bandsaw or a jig saw
6. Round over edges of handle and shaft with router - If you don’t have a router a hand planer or spokeshave work also
7. Smooth the edges and draw the ¼” centered reference gap - See video for the makeshift “centered-reference-gap-making-tool”
8. Draw grid - I spaced the grid lines by about an inch. If you do much more than that you risk chiseling against the grain and gouging out a deep chunk.
9. Mimic grid with circular saw cutting more and more shallow as you approach the shaft - I started at a ¼” deep on the edges and brought the blade of the circular saw up by about a 64th of an inch on each line as I make my way towards the shaft. This creates an even taper from the shaft to the edges.
10. Chisel out the grid pieces - Careful not too deep!!!
11. Sand smooth with belt sander, then orbital sander -
12. Clean up with hand sanding
Wood
Western Red Cedar, Black Walnut, White Ash
This is only to match my canoe. If I were trying to make a performance paddle I would make the whole thing out of Western Red Cedar because it is lightweight.
Dimensions - Do whatever works for you! Go try a couple paddles and take the best qualities from all of them and combine them into yours! My dimensions ended up being...
Length - 59” (or about up to my shoulder)
Thickness - 1”
Width - 1 ¼” at shaft, 7” at blade

Here is a guy that looks like here really knows what he is doing! unfortunately I don't have any drum sanders like his. 7:30 minutes in is where it really starts to get good. www.youtube.co....
Every RUclips video should be like this. Straight to the point and solid tips. Amazing my friend!
I Like your method for thinning down the blade!
I applaud your "Making a Paddle video"! Excellent. Thank you for sharing. Very well done. It was less than 3 minutes - and tells a great story. When I do my videos I try to make them short (as you did), and I have a tough time getting under 3 to 5 minutes (which is all the time most people take to read a video). You did it under 3 minutes and told your story. I stand and applaud you!!
+Stephen Priest Thanks Steve!!! I've learned a lot from your videos. It's an honor!
Love the grid technique
Wow! Quite impressive! I'd love to have the canoe to paddle on the Yellow Breeches Creek that my daughter, Jackie, grew up tubing on. You probably know her!
+Janet Graham Yeah! Wow thanks! The plan is to build another one this summer. If you want to commission it and help with the design I'll drive it to you when I'm done! Thanks for the comment!
Great first video! You make it look so easy. I can't wait for the next installment in the series.
Thanks Dianne!
Nice video Adam! That canoe is super impressive!
Thanks!!
You're an excellent craftsman. I watched your series on building your lovely canoe. Marvellous. Normally I dislike it when people give safety advice, but I was pleased to see you wearing rubber gloves while gluing up the paddle. I mention this because a friend of mine suffered epoxy poisoning after using it, bare handed, for years. He suffered dreadfully for about four months before purging it from his system.
In any case I'm looking forward to your next build.
Thanks! yeah... i def need to wear those gloves more often... a couple of my videos I did not and I have gotten some negative feedback about it. My excuse has been I am focussing on filming and I forgot and I'm not using it very often but I really just need to get real and start using rubbers! Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it!
Great job, looks really good. I'll be building one of these in the near future. Not for function, just for decor. Thanks for the tutorial. It's basically built like a big cutting board.
I met you at the expo today, your canoe is absolutely beautiful. I hope you make more things because you are very talented. Keep up the great work!
I was that kid looking at your canoe and by far that was one of the best canoes I have ever seen. I feel like I'm going to enjoy your videos and I hope you have a successful RUclips channel.👍🏻
+Estacada Slim thanks man! Great to hear from you! I hope you had a great time at the expo, next video is coming out next week. I appreciate the shout out👊🏾
Thank you for a simple way to make a great looking paddle. I am going to make paddles for my girls modeled after Moana. I can use your idea to get a rough shape and then do the details based on the film.
Great video. Simple, to the point. Great instructions in the notes. I will let you know how it goes.
Bryan Kipke that's awesome! Thanks for letting me know it was helpful!
Super great vid. One put if your wife won't let you build another canoe then you probably need to find another one.
I'm thinking of doing this soon but just with red cedar as a have boards large enough for paddles already, and I've never done any complex woodworking.
Your wife better let you build a second one! It looks amazing man.
+Donovan Hanson Thanks Donovan! Yeah I think it's a done deal. Follow me on all my social media stuff to see it! Good to hear from you!!!
You're a badass, bro

How much would you charge to make 3 dark colored (stained is fine) decorative paddles? Can we chat?
Benzini9 that's a good question... haven't really been focusing on selling stuff. my email is aguydoingstuff@gmail.com feel free to email me more details and I'll let you know! Thanks!
WICKED!!!!!!
You need to teach your wife about different types of canoes. When she learns the differences between a 14 foot lightweight solo canoe, a 20 foot square stern grand laker, solo and tandem whitewater canoes and a general purpose 18 footer she will want you to build all of them.
The Garlic Farm hahaha I think I have a lot to learn about em too! Do you build canoes? Since I posed this video last spring I did start canoe #2 and I am in fact almost done with it now. I've posted 14 videos on building them. I'm pumped to be done soon and ready to take a break for a bit... making videos takes a lot of work😅 thanks for watching and the comment!✌🏽
I have owned over 20 canoes and kayaks in my life, three of those are canoes that I built myself. I have also been a river guide and paddling instructor since 1992. I currently have three kayaks and two canoes with one more under construction. The canoe I'm building now is a copy of a Gene Jensen hull design for flatwater racing. Because my workspace is unheated the construction is on pause until spring. Glues and epoxies don't work well in freezing temps.
I've seen some of your videos and plan to watch the rest. You have given me some ideas to improve the way I build a canoe, specifically the stems.
and easy just look it up
Good suggestion! I'll look into it! Thanks!
Sir, can you make me two of those paddles?
Building a paddle seems more complicated than what you would expect.
I guess it depends on how fancy you want to get ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ like I said in the video - there's a bunch of different ways to make this either more or less complicated:)
Love your project. I made similar with WoodPrix instructions.
I made it by myself thanks to woodprix website.
I know you can get solutions for that on woodprix website.
