- Make It!
In this video, I am in the workshop making a pair of canoe paddles. Starting from selecting timber, right through the laminating, planing and shaping stages to reinforcing the blades with fibreglass and epoxy, I will take you through the whole process to create a beautiful handmade paddle of your own.
I have always wanted to make a traditional paddle and I am thrilled with the outcome - a deep water Ottertail paddle for myself and a powerful Beavertail paddle for my buddy Ginge - light, efficient, flexible paddles that will last a lifetime.
Timber sizes and all measurements come from the book mentioned in the video, linked below.
Thanks for watching!

It's U tube every time.
Well done Simon.
Watching a craftsman is so entertaining. 😎☯️🌱
One of these days I hope to build a Cedar Strip Canoe and hope to add two paddles to the process. I've appreciated your skill and heart in making these two. Thank you.
Glad to see you back Simon we need more of you and Andy
Wow just wow. Time, patience, and pride in your work, every right to be pleased, thanks for taking us through it
I’ve just watched a master craftsman plying his trade. Absolutely brilliant Simon. Best 34 minutes I’ve spent in a long time.
Thank you Tony!
Excellent tips and inspiration for restoring a paddle where the blade had rotted due to water ingress. Thanks a lot Simon!
The whole day long I laugh with the song,
and paddle me own canoe,
so love everybody, trust only the few
as the world I go travelling through.
And never sit down with a tear and a frown,
but paddle your own canoe,
I rise with the lark, from daylight to dark,
I do what I have to do ! 🛶
Richard ⛺️Indoors ! 👌
I love that 😁
i just cant believe someone put a dislike, philistine ! Simon you are a true artist and a grafter :D
That's because they are a-holes
I dont understand why some people use the term 'philistine' in some derogatory manner. It clearly refers to the Palestinian people and as such may be considered racist.
@@lordwessex9553 you seem woke!
You live your life and let everyone get on with theirs
not everyone is a PC Robot
@@lordwessex9553 I beg to differ, Philistine with a capital P refers to the people, small p refers to to an indifference to artistic talent, i have no hostile intentions toward anybody except perhaps those that throw accusations of racism around where there isn't any .

I will never make a canoe paddle but I thoroughly enjoy watch a master craftsman doing what he loves to do. Thank you for this.
I have no interest in paddles or woodworking...... But I have to admit, I found that strangely therapeutic. Watching a person who is good at their craft is so enjoyable. Thank you.
The hard work and planning that you put into all your projects is something that shows in the end result, Simon. You are a true craftsman.
Great work, as always.
Take care.
I liked it a lot and I learned a great deal.
Simon, it truly is a pleasure to watch an English Craftsman at his work. Beautiful paddles!
Love your paddles. Just about to spruce up 2 I bought on ebay and your video has been very helpful. Thanks for posting.
Amazing job! Thanks for sharing
.
Awesome Job Simon. They look fabulous and I'm sure Ginge'll be thrilled.
My dad loves you
Just like your canoe, truly beautiful.
Wow the golden hand
Nice work. I make paddles for tribal canoe journeys in the pnw. Just a tip from someone who has paddled hundreds of miles with my own paddles, drill out and dowel laterally through your handle where you grip. Those handle ears will break off with all that vertical grain over time. It hurts like breaking a bone when you've made it yourself.
What beautiful looking paddles!
Great great great craftsmanship.!!!!
Truly stunning. Works of art.
Fantastic video with loads of tips and information. Thank you for showing us how.
Very interesting .
Superb job ! Well above my skillset and patience level
Just a tip..... use a banana shaped piece of 1"thick wood and staple across the 'open' side a strip of emery cloth tape. Brilliant for sanding round a curve. Mike
You can be justifiably proud there, Sis. Well done!
Thanks bro!
Fantastic I’m no craftsman but I’m gonna try make my own paddle
I love the way you say, any one can do this without the machine tools you use, its not the tools that are needed or not, its the skill and I don't think many have the level of skill you have. Great vid and paddles.
Excellent....... Yep, that'll cover it.
Hey dude
I can wait to christen the paddle in those Norfolk waters ..thank you so much mate I’m absolutely blown away 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Mate, that is absolutely my pleasure! The least I could do after all you’ve done! Looking forward to another paddle soon!
Hei Simon, I get up my hat for you ! Nothing else from an italian living in Brasil .
Gorgeous
That sure is a whole lot of effort just to get some wood shavings for starting a fire. 😋😉😁
Lovely craftsmanship, just as with other things you've shown us.
Beat me 👍🏻
Hahaha - I’ve certainly got plenty of that now!! 😉👍🔥
I'll have you know I'm exceedingly good at making smaller pieces of wood out of larger ones. I've got a whole trash bin full to prove it! ; D
I just LOVE your channel bro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep em coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On your next paddle try only using oil on the handle and shaft and varnish or epoxy on the blade. An oiled shaft and handle won't give you that hand burn after a few hours in the canoe. Very nice work. Like the flex!
Agreed!
Stunning
What a pleasure to watch this video.
Top job !
Fantastic job Simon. Looking forward to seeing them in the water.
Please let us know when you are using them on any future video of you paddling your homemade canoe. You give so much pleasure to your viewers with your superb videos. Thank you, Simon.
Fantastic video! Narration is both interactive and informative. Watching you craft the paddle with such skill is an absolute joy to watch.
What a man Simon, Jack of all trades & a master of them all .... 👏🏻👏🏻
Very therapeutic to watch. Thanks Simon
Masterpiece
Good stuff as always, right on.
beautiful
Thank you very much Simon. I found the video very interesting and learned a lot.
Don't need paddles for anything. But I watched the whole movie. Just because of watching. Thanks for making.
I've been thinking about the canoe on some of the trips, and having it fiberglass makes so much sense. So enjoyable to watch a craftsman at work! I would love more videos like this! And to dislikes? Come on... If you don't like it, find something else. A craftsman who also makes great videos, what's not to like?
Heck of a lot of work! Nice job.
Totally mesmerising! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🍺
Nice work Simon, a good blade is a joy to paddle with.
I am inspired!!

Fantastic. A pleasure to watch a craftsman👍
Hi!! I want to tell you how much I enjoy your channel! Thank you from Upstate NY!
Thank you Kathleen 👍
Briefly in 1990ish I worked for a boat builder. All the paints, epoxies, and such gubbins was kept in what was literally a walk in safe. If the boss man wasn’t in the yard nobody had access to that stuff.
Probably has to be that careful with safety regs, it’s all gone wrong somewhere! 🙄
Absolutely brilliant work! So enjoyable to watch. Thank you!
They look beautiful .
Quality work 👏👏👏
