Never gets old!!! So many tiny jokes that you might miss on the first viewing. The movie is set in the 40s hence the cars. The board game came out in 1943. When the movie was originally released, there were three versions each with one of the different endings and it was up to the theater to show whichever version they wanted. It wasn't until they put the movie on VHS (then DVD) that all three endings were included with the entire movie. The late Eileen Brennan and the late Madeline Kahn are just fabulous! The three different endings were shown at different theaters. When the film was released on video (and later DVD and then streaming,) all three endings were included. In addition, the DVD, gave the viewers the option to to play the movie either with one randomly selected ending or with a specifically chosen ending. Originslly there were plans to do an ending with each of the six characters being guilty of the murders, however it was scrapped when writer/director Jonathan Lynn decided it would be too hard to come up with an ending for each character, plus the twist of Wadsworth without seeming contrived and confusing, so only four endings were written (with only three being included in the movie's release). Madeline Kahn' (who played Mrs. White) improvised the "Flames...on the side of my face" monologue about her hatred for Yvette the French maid because she forgot her actual lines. The bemused reactions of the rest of the cast (Tim Curry is visibly trying not to laugh, while Martin Mull and Christopher Lloyd are looking around wondering who gave her those lines) while she's reciting it are the real reactions of the other actors to her improvisation. The color of each character's car is the same color as their playing piece in the game, and is introduced as follows: Colonel Mustard drives a yellow 1954 Cadillac Series 62, Mrs. White drives a black-and-white 1950 MG TD convertible, Mrs. Peacock drives a blue 1952 Packard 200 Deluxe club sedan, Mr. Green drives a green 1951 Plymouth Cranbrook, Ms. Scarlet drives a 1946 red Lincoln Continental, and Professor Plum drives a purple 1949 Pontiac Streamliner Station Wagon. The film only grossed $14.6 million on a $15 million budget and was one of the big flops of the 1985 Christmas season (possibly due to the Multiple Endings gimmick). its DVD released earned back its production costs. The film has since been recognized as one of the best comedies made in the last 40 years. Jonathan Lynn, who also wrote the scipt, says his personal favorite ending is the one where Miss Scarlet is the murderer.
Amber, the guy playing Wadsworth is Tim Curry. He was the head attendant at the hotel in Home Alone 2, also he was Pennywise in the "It" tv miniseries in 1990. Also, he was the ship's doctor on the Red October in The Hunt For Red October. He was also Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island.
He was the Grand Wizard in The Worst Witch movie from the 80s with Charlotte Rae and Faruiza Balk. He has worked pretty consistently through out his career.
Madeline Kahn, smacking her champagne flute against the mantle and screaming "Please" is side splitting. I was lucky to catch the showing of "Here's what really happened". As people were exiting the theater, everyone was still laughing at The Singing Telegram.
This movie is a trip. Though it bombed in theaters in 1985, it quickly became a classic - A wonderfully irreverent murder-mystery parody that never takes itself too seriously. The work is always top-shelf when you have first-class writing, and the writing with all the snappy dialogue motivated this cast of iconic character-actors to put on their A-game. Madeline Kahn's improvisation and ad libbing steals nearly every scene she's in, and Tim Curry's energetic tour de force performance as Wadsworth was nothing short of brilliant.
When you watch enough reactions to this movie you start to understand why it bombed. It is only natural to treat this as a mystery and focus on trying to figure out who the killer is but the secret to enjoying this movie is to treat it as a comedy and not care who the killer is and focus more on the snappy dialogue and comedy performances. I see so many reactors fall into the trap of treating this as a serious mystery and so many of the funny moments go over their head when they do. I have to assume a good chunk of the original audience for this movie did the same thing. And for the record I love, love, love this movie but I have never taken the mystery side of it very seriously. I have always loved the slapstick facet of it instead.
Clue _looks_ like a whodunnit, but I think it is really an "old dark house" movie, a genre of comedy thriller in which people turn up to a remote mansion and get killed/harassed by a mysterious someone, where the point is the laughs and scares, not solving the mystery. The most famous example is The Cat & the Canary, which has been remade several times over the years.
All of the main actors in this movie were well known character actors at the time this was made. Most, if not all, were also theater trained actors as well which gives this a little more flare.
The guy playing Wadsworth is Tim Curry, and he is a certified Eighties Icon. His performance in Clue was incredible, but you should check him out in the Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), Annie (1982), Legend (1985), It (1990), & the Three Musketeers (1994). No matter what he's in, he never ceases to amaze. He's made more movies, but these are the ones that made him an icon.
I remember watching this in the theaters. Love the alternate endings. Actually Game came out first, and Movie is based on the Game. As always thanks for the memories and the smiles.
I was about to say something when she said the game was based on the movie. The game was first published in 1949, 36 years before anyone tried to make a movie of it.
The woman who who plays "Miss Scarlet has a terrific scene in "Victor\Victoria". A song and dance number that made my eyes pop out. That is also a terrific movie.
About a decade before "Clue", there was another whodunit spoof called "Murder By Death", though the original "Clue" board game does predate that. Both movies feature Eileen Brennan in the casts (playing different characters). "Murder By Death" also includes Peter Falk, Peter Sellers, Maggie Smith, Alec Guiness, David Niven, James Coco, Elsa Lanchester, Estelle Winwood, James Cromwell, Richard Narita & Nancy Walker.
There was a made for TV film a few years later cleared inspired by it called "Murder Can Hurt You" which featured parodies of 70s TV detectives rather than classic literary ones. It was not written by Neil Simon and was nowhere near the quality.
@@mblackwl I've seen all three of these and I agree that Murder Can Hurt You is the worst of the three with Clue being the best. I also agree that Clue and Murder By Death make a great double feature.
I love Tim Curry he is a scene stealing amazing talent be it in a movie he is the star of like Rocky Horror or It or just a piece of the cast like THIS movie or Home Alone 2
Tim Curry is one of the most amazing actors and people just... ever. Tim Curry is Pennywise in the old It. He's Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island. He's Frankenfurter in Rocky Horror Picture Show. He's Darkness in Legend. The voice of Hexxus in Ferngully. I could go on and on. The man's got range and is amazing.
For me, this movie was my intro to Tim Curry. I saw this as like a 10 year old, and didn't see his more famous role in Rocky Horror until college. The way he just gets more into the explanations at the end. Ms. White is the AMAZING Madeline Kahn, she is a treasure and like others we didn't get enough time with her! What does exist is gold, always bet on Madeline. Her quote about "Hated her Sooo much, it flames, in the side of my face...." We worked that into conversations. I guess in the 90s the precursor to the meme was just quoting a TV show/movie/commercial.
You may remember Ms. White from blazing Saddles. She was the German singer. The Butler, Tim Curry is such A great Character actor. Infact some Halloween movies he's in to watch are "IT" he plays Pennywise, "Legend" he plays the devil, and "The rocky horror picture show" he plays Dr Frank-N-Furter.
Just got to give you some info on the actors as you have reacted to most of them before. Tim Curry the butler (Rocky Horror Picture Show) Madeline Kahn as Mrs White ( Blazing Saddles), Michael McKean as Mr. Green (Spinal Tap), Christopher Lloyd as Professor Plum (Back to the Future), Jane Wiedlin as the singing telegram girl (guitarist for the Go-gos)
In the game there is a rule that if a player's pawn stops in a doorway, no other players' pawn can move past them . Throughout the film, the cast get stuck in doors and narrow passages because of this.
Psych tv show did an episode based on this film and featuring some of the original cast. It was so cool and funny. If I recall correctly, it aired twice the same night, first for east coast, later for west coast, and each had a different ending.
This film is absolutely riddled with brilliance. The script is perfect. The comedic timing is perfect. The cast is perfect. From a cinematic perspective its such a rare gem!
Back in the day when this came out on VHS, I wore mine out. The tap literally Broke because I watcged it so much. You can never fet tired of this movie. ❤
This was full of 80s legends, Wadsworth was Tim Curry aka Pennywise the Clown in 1990 mini series IT, Howard Hessman was the FBI agent with the white hair, so many stars in this one
Fun fact: mrs Scarlett was supposed to originally be played by Carrie Fisher, but she went to rehab right as it was about to start filming. So they had to get Leslie Ann Warren in at the last second.
The gag about the Singing Telegram girl (played by Jane Wiedlin from The Go-Gos, who was also Joan of Arc in Bill & Ted) is one of the greatest throwaways ever filmed
Some nights, after dinner, we'd play board games. Once we were playing Clue and our daughter, who was about 5 years old at the time, announced her conclusion as to "who did it, where an with what"....all excited she declared "colonel Sanders did it in the kitchen with a chicken!". We laughed so hard our 9 year old son fell off his chair. BTW, we'd had KFC for dinner. 😂
I love this movie. Tim Curry is awesome in this movie. You should watch every Tim Curry movie. He is iconic in every movie he is in. The cast is awesome. This movie follows the board game very well. The actor that plays Mr Green is in Spinal Tap and from Laverne and Shirley. He played Lenny in Laverne and Shirley.
Wadsworth was played by Tim Curry, one the best actors ever, best known for The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Unfortunately, in 2012 he had a major stroke, and is unable to walk, though he is getting better at talking again. And, yes, Professor Plum was played by Christopher Lloyd who was in Back to the Future. The "big" one you didn't catch was Mr. Green, played by Michael McKean, was David St. Hubbins in This is Spinal Tap, the guy whose girlfriend broke up the band. The whole cast was incredibly talented!!!!
Amber laughing at Jay wanting to be on Survivor is exactly the same as when my husband says he wants to be on Naked and Afraid. He wouldn't last an hour!
Glad you both enjoyed Clue. Madeline Khan (Mrs. White) was a comic genius (you may recall her in Blazing Saddles as Lili Von Shtupp (the German burlesque show performer). Eileen Brennan (Mrs. Peacock) was also a hilarious comic actress (in so many roles). Leslie Ann Warren was hilarious in the classic Julie Andrews gender bender Blake Edwards comedy Victor Victoria (1982), a comedy you both shouldn't miss and should review sometime). Leslie and Eileen played guest star roles on a few Will & Grace episodes (the original series run) respectively as Will's father's mistress and as Zondra, Jack McFaland's acting coach who would tell him his acting stinks! 😂😂
Where you've seen them: Tim Curry (Wadsworth) starred in The Rocky Horror Picture Show Madeline Kahn (Mrs. White) is from Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein Michael McKean (Mr. Green) is from This is Spinal Tap (and similar films with the same cast) Christopher Lloyd (Professor Plum) is from Back to the Future, as you recalled (and other things you'll see) Lesley Ann-Warren (Miss Scarlett) had worked mostly in TV before this, starting when she starred in a live-action Cinderella at age 17. Her first real success in films was in Victor/Victoria, which was 1982, but you haven't seen that yet. She's worked steadily ever since. Eileen Brennan (Mrs Peacock) I don't think you've seen as yet, but you will in The Last Picture Show, The Sting, and Private Benjamin. Most pertinently, though, she is in Murder by Death (1976) which is one of the films this was modeled on. (Indeed, I prefer that one.) Martin Mull (Colonel Mustard) was primarily a comedian, starting as a musical satirist and then doing a good amount of TV work. You will see him again in Mrs. Doubtfire. Colleen Camp (Yvette) is mostly a supporting actress. You will see her in smaller parts in films as diverse as Apocalypse: Now, Die Hard 3, Wayne's World, and Election. Now you know.
Clue is one of my Favorite movies. I've been watching it for over 30 years & it still makes me laugh. The cast is Perfect. I love seeing people discovering this movie. A little info: The board game was released 1949, this game originally went by the title CLUEDO.
"Clue" is my all time favorite movie!!!! ❤ The movie was based on the game I think. The entire cast was the best comedic actors of their time. Awesome to see them all together in one movie!❤😂😊
Also in the theaters, there where 3 different endings. And when it came to vhs they showed all 3 but the coolest thing is on DVD and bluray you can play the movie with a random ending so that it mimics the theater experience!
And he played the cop who pulls Neal & Del (Steven Martin & John Candy) over in Planes, Trains & Automobiles....He is best known for playing Leonard "Lenny" Kosnowski on the long running sitcom Laverne & Shirley.
Madeleine Kahn, "Mrs. White," was Lilli von Shtupp in "Blazing Saddles." :-) Tim Curry, who played Wadsworth, is an accomplished character actor. He was Pennywise in the original "It" and Dr. Frank-n-Furter in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."
Love Clue seen it many times, Tim Curry was the Butler great actor. He plays the devil in Legend, Pennywise in the original IT. So many great lines in this movie that weren't in your review. The end with Mr. Green he says Im gonna go home and sleep with my wife. Great movie !!
The alternative ending was a marketing ploy and you could go see it with different endings. I saw it twice in the theater so that I could see a different ending each time.
If you noticed, whenever two people try to pass through an opening, door, between two chairs, etc, it’s because in the game two pieces can’t occupy the same space. It’s a very subtle homage to the game!
I was literally thinking about you guys wishing for an upload and you're doing one of the greats. I watched this over and over back in the day. It's only in the last decade or so that people have acknowledged how great it is. I'm gonna watch now. 😊🙏🏼

So glad you guys watched this - one of my old school favorites. The guy go played Wadsworth was Tim Curry he has been in quite a few movies and was infamous for Ricky Horror Picture Show. Love watching you guys. Such a cute couple 🥰 God Bless
The Singing telegram girl is Jane Wiedlin who plays the rhythm guitar and backing vocals in the GoGos. She was also Joan of Arc in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.
Hi from Scotland 👋 Great reaction folks. I love this movie and the murder mystery genre in general, this was so well put together and played. Absolutely love the three alternative solutions. Great fun and twist on the classic murder mystery and the board game 😎👍
I LOVE watching people watch this for the first time! You two did NOT disappoint! 😂 It wasn't until it was shown on television that we could finally see all the possible endings. I kept hearing about them but there was no internet to see them on! 😡Grrr!
Wadsworth was played by Tim Curry. He's usually type casted as the villain and is exceedingly perfect at playing the villain. He's one of my favorite actors.

The film has since been recognized as one of the best comedies made in the last 40 years.
Jonathan Lynn, who also wrote the scipt, says his personal favorite ending is the one where Miss Scarlet is the murderer.
Madeline Kahn didn't forget her lines. She told the director she wanted to try something, so he let her riff in the next take.
Amber, the guy playing Wadsworth is Tim Curry. He was the head attendant at the hotel in Home Alone 2, also he was Pennywise in the "It" tv miniseries in 1990. Also, he was the ship's doctor on the Red October in The Hunt For Red October. He was also Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island.
don't forget he was Dr. Frank-N-Furter in Rocky Horror Picture Show.
And Darkness in Legend. Tim Curry was in quite a few cult classic movies.
And mrs hannigans brother in Annie
@@sailfishcoachyep he played Rooster
He was the Grand Wizard in The Worst Witch movie from the 80s with Charlotte Rae and Faruiza Balk. He has worked pretty consistently through out his career.
"'Can you keep a secret?'... 'Yes.' 'So can I.'"
-Wadsworth to Colonel Mustard
Fun Fact: The singing telegram girl was played by Jane Wiedlin of "The Go-Go's"
I always LMFAO at that part!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
“I’m going home to sleep with my wife.”😂😂
This movie is so awesome with an incredible cast.
@robsquadmoviereactions that was Michael McKean, one of the leads in Spinal Tap.
@@mayabaireyone of my very favorites! He’s perfect in every film he does! Love him in Airheads with Brendan Fraser as well.
Such a great ending…
The whole casting is brilliant. They all just flowed so well together. ❤
About a decade before "Clue",
there was another whodunit spoof
called "Murder By Death", though
the original "Clue" board game
does predate that. Both movies
feature Eileen Brennan in the casts
(playing different characters).
"Murder By Death" also includes
Peter Falk, Peter Sellers, Maggie Smith,
Alec Guiness, David Niven, James Coco,
Elsa Lanchester, Estelle Winwood,
James Cromwell, Richard Narita
& Nancy Walker.
Its also problematic for the yellowface. And not as good as Clue despite the steller cast
I've always like including Murder by Death and Clue as one of the ultimate double features to watch.
Murder by Death and Clue make for a good double feature!!
I love this movie. Tim Curry is awesome😂 his face when he reached for the dagger33:32🤣😝🤣😂
You may remember Ms. White from blazing Saddles.
She was the German singer. The Butler, Tim Curry is such A great Character actor. Infact some Halloween movies he's in to watch are "IT" he plays Pennywise, "Legend" he plays the devil, and "The rocky horror picture show" he plays
Dr Frank-N-Furter.
Lee Ving as Mr Body is the lead singer of the punk band Fear
Lee Ving also co-starred in Flashdance
Michael McKean earlier known for being half of Lenny & Squiggy on Laverne & Shirley show.
And Eileen Brennan (Mrs. Peacock) in Private Benjamin (movie and TV series)
This cast is 100% of some of the best comedians & character actors of the time! It's one of THE best ensemble casts ever put together on film!.
Tim Curry - absolute legend.... Just naming three... Wadsworth in Clue, Frankenfurter in Rocky Horror and Darkness in Legend.
Back in the day when this came out on VHS, I wore mine out. The tap literally Broke because I watcged it so much. You can never fet tired of this movie. ❤
Wadsworth: "Like the Mounties, we always get our man!"
Green: "MRS. PEACOCK WAS A MAN?!!"
(slap) (slap)
This was full of 80s legends, Wadsworth was Tim Curry aka Pennywise the Clown in 1990 mini series IT, Howard Hessman was the FBI agent with the white hair, so many stars in this one
The film was based on the board game. When this was in the theaters you didn't know what ending you would get and you only got one.
Fun fact: mrs Scarlett was supposed to originally be played by Carrie Fisher, but she went to rehab right as it was about to start filming. So they had to get Leslie Ann Warren in at the last second.
Not sure if you're familiar with Tim Curry but you should recognize Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown).
The gag about the Singing Telegram girl (played by Jane Wiedlin from The Go-Gos, who was also Joan of Arc in Bill & Ted) is one of the greatest throwaways ever filmed
Mr. Boddy is played by Lee Ving. Singer of one of the most iconic punk rock bands ever, FEAR.
The show Psych did a great homage to this movie and even had some of the same cast in the episode.
You should watch "Young Frankenstein" for Halloween (as well as being another Mel Brooks/Gene Wilder teamup).
Christopher Lloyd was in two classic, perfect-script films in 1985. This and BTTF.
Isn't Mrs Peacock from Private Benjamin? She is the other one I recognized.
@@Julie-gp4qd Yep!!! Rob Squad has not reacted to that one, so didn't mention so as not to overly confuse things.
The singing telegram girl was played by Jane Wiedlin from The GoGo's.
This is Spinal Tap? He'll always be Lenny to me.
Amber laughing at Jay wanting to be on Survivor is exactly the same as when my husband says he wants to be on Naked and Afraid. He wouldn't last an hour!
That house is the future home of Count Dracula. Fred and Wilma Flintstone used to live there.
FLAMES! ON THE SIDE OF MY FACE! absolute gold
The singing telegram ALONE gets me rolling every time! 🤣🤣🤣
Where you've seen them:
Tim Curry (Wadsworth) starred in The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Madeline Kahn (Mrs. White) is from Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein
Michael McKean (Mr. Green) is from This is Spinal Tap (and similar films with the same cast)
Christopher Lloyd (Professor Plum) is from Back to the Future, as you recalled (and other things you'll see)
Lesley Ann-Warren (Miss Scarlett) had worked mostly in TV before this, starting when she starred in a live-action Cinderella at age 17.
(Indeed, I prefer that one.)
Martin Mull (Colonel Mustard) was primarily a comedian, starting as a musical satirist and then doing a good amount of TV work. You will see him again in Mrs. Doubtfire.
Colleen Camp (Yvette) is mostly a supporting actress. You will see her in smaller parts in films as diverse as Apocalypse: Now, Die Hard 3, Wayne's World, and Election.
Now you know.
You guys absolutely *need* to watch The Lost Boys! Classic 80’s comedy-horror movie with a banger of a soundtrack!
Hahaha, he was right about Doc Brown, but you had me LOL at “You also thought that Carrie Fisher was Stevie Nicks”
The best part about the multiple endings is that all three of them check out when you rewatch from the beginning 😃
This movie was iconic for the 80’s. Even after all the endings I’m left with “who truly did it?” Loved y’all’s reaction❤
Clue is one of my Favorite movies. I've been watching it for over 30 years & it still makes me laugh. The cast is Perfect. I love seeing people discovering this movie.
A little info: The board game was released 1949, this game originally went by the title CLUEDO.
The singing telegram lady is Jane Weidlin from the Gogos!
I am psychic! I was just wondering if you were going to watch this one literally 10 minutes ago...Time to buy a lottery ticket!
@rob squad, the guy with the glasses, not the professor from Back to the Future, is Michael McKean. He played the lead singer of Spinal Tap.
Yall should watch The Burbs this October! Another funny mysterious one, and with a younger Tom Hanks!
Yes!!! That's another great comedy/mystery.
Clue is an all time classic. Tim Curry's manic recap of the entire movie is incredible. Watch it again with subtitles to catch more of the puns.
I have never been more excited about a reaction video!!!!!!
The alternative ending was a marketing ploy and you could go see it with different endings. I saw it twice in the theater so that I could see a different ending each time.
You guys should consider watching 'The Sting' (1973) both the movie and the soundtrack won Oscars.
If you noticed, whenever two people try to pass through an opening, door, between two chairs, etc, it’s because in the game two pieces can’t occupy the same space. It’s a very subtle homage to the game!
Classic movie! You guys are gonna love this one!
This is a highly underrated movie. One of the greats. Great reaction.
Hands down, one of the best written comedies i have ever seen
If someone wants a lesson in quick, clever banter, this is definitely a movie for them.
The singing telegram lady was Jane Wiedlin from the group Go-Go’s
I was literally thinking about you guys wishing for an upload and you're doing one of the greats. I watched this over and over back in the day. It's only in the last decade or so that people have acknowledged how great it is. I'm gonna watch now. 😊🙏🏼
Mrs. White (Madeline Kahn) was Lili Von Shtupp in Blazing Saddles. She was also in Young Frankenstein.
And in Mel Brooks High Anxiety....😉
This is my go to movie. I love the movie and board game!
Mrs.White = is Madeleine Kahn you saw her in Blazing Saddles
The FBI guy = You saw him in Spinal Tap
And you recognized Christopher Lloyd from Back To The Future
So glad you guys watched this - one of my old school favorites. The guy go played Wadsworth was Tim Curry he has been in quite a few movies and was infamous for Ricky Horror Picture Show. Love watching you guys. Such a cute couple 🥰 God Bless
Rocky Horror Picture Show...
The Singing telegram girl is Jane Wiedlin who plays the rhythm guitar and backing vocals in the GoGos. She was also Joan of Arc in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.
This movie. This movie!! Brilliance!
God i love Christopher Lloyd.. One of the most Underrated Actors..
And the Butler is the one and only Tim Curry.
I love the amazing race! I would love to see you guys compete!!
Yes, Christopher Lloyd (Prof. Plum) was in Back to the Future. But it isn't a younger him, Clue and Back to the Future came out the same year 😂
This is one of my fav movies! I watch it every October
FYI. The singing telegram girl that gets shot is Jane wiedlin from the group The Go-Go's.
This is very very much like the cult classic *”Murder By Death”* (1976) which is worth checking out
Hi from Scotland 👋 Great reaction folks. I love this movie and the murder mystery genre in general, this was so well put together and played. Absolutely love the three alternative solutions. Great fun and twist on the classic murder mystery and the board game 😎👍
I LOVE watching people watch this for the first time! You two did NOT disappoint! 😂
It wasn't until it was shown on television that we could finally see all the possible endings.
I kept hearing about them but there was no internet to see them on! 😡Grrr!
Wadsworth was played by Tim Curry. He's usually type casted as the villain and is exceedingly perfect at playing the villain. He's one of my favorite actors.
One of my favorite all-time comedies.
I could quote this whole movie when I was a kid😂
