I loved her name, but I'm guessing a lot of younger viewers haven't heard the term "dot matrix printer." It's interesting seeing the pop culture references that have passed from use.
Rick Moranis as Darth Helmut stole every scene in this movie. He was so funny. Director Mel Brooks played the president. Was quite surprised Amber and Jay that you didn't recognize him. Daphne Zuniga played the princess. She was an underrated 80's/90's actress who shot to short lived fame when she was cast in the 90's cult show "Melrose Place" which starred Heather Locklear.
Fun fact, in the scene where Dark Helmet is playing with his dolls, Rick Moranis improvised the dialogue. And if you didn't know, Lone Star is an amalgamation of Luke and Han, hence why he's a pilot like Han but is trained by Yogurt like Luke and Yoda.
Tbh, I think a lot of it would go by them-you can’t take anything literally in that movie and have to listen to everything because you would miss so much not paying attention.
Barf - "I'm a Mog, half man half dog. I'm my own best friend". Always loved that line lol. Mel Brooks (Yogurt) has made so many good movies as you've already seen a couple I believe. Try History Of The World which is another great one of his.

The diner scene at the end with the guy laying on the table and the alien popping out of his chest is a spoof of the Alien horror movies. The guy that was in this scene is John Hurt and he is reprising his roll from the original Alien movie from 1979 where this same thing happened, hence the line "Oh no. Not again." Also, I don't know if ya'll know this, but Mel Brooks didn't just direct this movie, but he also played as President Skroob and Yogurt.
I saw this in the theaters when it was first released, and it's my favorite Mel Brooks movie! "Dot Matrix" was a style of printer in use when this movie was released. She was played by Lorene Yarnell, of the mime act Shields and Yarnell. Joan Rivers supplied the voice. "Oh no! Not again!" was a reference to the movie Alien, when the creature burst out of a man's chest--and yes, the man in Alien was played by John Hurt, the same actor in the diner. The dancing alien creature was an homage to a dancing cartoon frog, Michigan J. Frog (original appearance in the cartoon short, One Froggy Evening) May The Schwartz Be With You! 😁😉
Which franchise should they watch first? Alien or Planet of the Apes - in both franchises I mean the original movies and the more recent ones, get the full experience for both
Mel Brooks played The President and Yogurt, and his accent was more Jewish/Yiddish than Brooklyn which is why they used jokes like the Swartz and Drewish Princess.
About all the "Branding." When the first "Star Wars" movie was being made, Mark Hamil overheard the talks of merchandising based on the movie. So, he got it put into his contract that he got one of anything made with "Star Wars" on it. He did not realize, "they were going to be making Darth Vader Electric Toothbrushes." For years, he had crates of stuff delivered to his house on a weekly, sometimes daily basis. He even got stuff that was not sold in the United States.
Thank you for recalling this point Amber. The famous who's on first sketch was originally performed in Vaudeville then later for television and w/the USO for the troops by the legendary Abbott and Costello. Lou Costello: " Who's on first?" Bud Abbott: "No 'Who's' on second, 'What' is on 1st" & so on...I highly encourage you both to find a recording of that
The actress playing Princess Vespa is Daphne Zuniga. She made tons of minor movies in the 80s & 90s. She got big on tv shows Melrose Place with Heather Thomas and One Tree Hill. But I remember first seeing her play Helen Hunt’s little sister in The Quarterback Princess.
I remember seeing this in the theater when I was a kid. The Mr. Video scene is brilliant, and all the gags and puns are All on point! Thanks you guys for reacting to a classic, love your content, keep killin it!
The Twins at about 9:30 are Dian and Denise Gallup. They were the "Doublemint Twins" for a long time. Wrigley's Doublemint gum had always featured twins in their ads. They were parodying themselves therefore, hence why he says "Chew your gum" to them.
BTW...the castle was fashioned from the stunning Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany. Walt Disney borrowed its look too.😃 I've been there and it's breathtakingly beautiful.💗

The Diner scene was a spoof of the 1979 scifi horror Alien. They used the same actor, John Hurt to reprise the chest burster scene. And Jay, you were on the money with the frog, because the creature spoofs the frog from a classic Looney Toons bit, in case you didn't know the movie was made by Warner Brothers, the home of Looney Tunes. The final scene was spoofing the final scene from the 1968 Planet of the Apes. So much going on with this movie! Mel Brooks is awesome, and has no problem going over the top!
Love this movie, always makes me laugh. Voice of the Female robot Called Dot is comedian Joan Rivers R.I.P. Joan. Yes the dog like character is The Great John Candy. The guy with him is the actor Bill Pullman who played the president in Independence Day movie. Actually guys I still have VHS movies and a player that still works. Amber the who's on first sketch was Abbott and Costello. The alien that came out of that guys chest in the diner its a Alien movie reference, the first one, that actor was the actual actor fromt the Alien movie John Hurt. Check the first Alien out and you'll get that reference guys. The vadar landed in the head, its a reference to planet of the apes movie.
Also the joke in the diner is suppose to be lame, but if you like Dad jokes it's suppose to be funny due to the word play on the planet Pluto and Mickey's dog Pluto.
I still remember watching this at the theater with my friends. The video scene killed us because people always talk about how fast a movie got released onto videocassette real quick.
YES!!!!! This was one of the earliest movies I remember watching, I've seen it dozens of times and it's ALWAYS hilarious..... Only got better as I got older and started getting some of the references to other movies I didn't know.
John Hurt was the guy in the diner. That is a spoof of the movie Alien, which also co-starred John Hurt. The creature from Alien that came out of his stomach was a spoof of Michigan J. Frog from the Warner Brothers cartoon One Froggy Evening. Once you Watch Planet of the Apes, you will appreciate that spoof too.
The reference re: metamorphosis (when he gave the command to Kafka for the ship to change into the maid with the vacuum cleaner) - is a nod to Metamorphosis - a novella written by Franz Kafka. I loved your reaction to this hilarious movie. While "The Birdcage" (starring Robin Williams) is not a spoof, it's so much fun and more of a "farce" - which is usually a show, play or movie with absurd situations. For some reason, watching Spaceballs made me think of the Birdcage❣
A few of the movie reverences in this, that you need to watch are the Aliens movies, the Planet of the Apes movies, and of course the Star Trek movies (and show!). Both of them are great series, but make sure you start from the beginning. Mel Brooks played the evil commander and also Yogurt. Some other great comedies by him are: The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety and History of the World: part 1.
My father's cousin was Vinny the Gangster with Pizza the Hut. His name is Rudy De Luca and he also help Mel Brooks write a few movies. I love spaceballs
Might have already been mentioned, but a couple of the references you might have missed. "Prince Valium" is a joke on an old newspaper comic called "Prince Valiant" and the drug valium. And the alien that came out of the guy is a reference to the movie "Alien". Watch "Alien" if you want the ultimate sci-fi horror film.
Well also it was a common thing back in the day to say that a woman was "sleeping with Prince Valium" as at the time valium was prescribed to women a lot more than men.
First of all thanks so much for all your reactions, and for all your hard work. Your videos always show how much effort you put in. Now just FYI: the last scene that you saw where the creature came out of the guys chest? That was from the movie Alien (the first one). And the guy that it happened to in Spaceballs, his name is John Hurt, he is the guy that it happened to an Alien also. There are so many references to great sci-fi movies. Mel Brooks is the master of these kind of spoof movies. He makes them so well so tongue-in-cheek, so sarcastic, and so hilariously funny. Now you’ve got to review his movie Robin Hood: Men In Tights (guess what that’s a spoof of? LOL!). It is really very funny. Thanks again for all your hard work. I’ve been a subscriber of yours since I first saw your reaction a year ago! 😊👍🙏
Rick Moranis was a well known character actor when this came out. You saw him in Ghostbusters as the nerdy neighbor. You would also enjoy him in Parenthood whuch costars Steve Martin as well as a while slew of well known actirs at the time. You both would enjoy it. Bill Pullman is the actor who played Lone Star. He was the original fiance in Sleepless in Seattle. Thanks for the movie!
Other Rick Moran's movies include, Honey I shrank the kids, Honey I blew up the kids, and Amber also referenced Little Shop of Horrors, which is the one with the plant
Bill Pullman, the actor who plays Lone Starr, is in a really funny movie called "Ruthless People" (1986), which also stars Bette Midler, and Danny Devito, Judge Reinhold (of Beverly Hills Cop), and Helen Slater. Pullman also stars in these other great titles: "Lake Placid", "Independence Day", "The Serpent and the Rainbow", "Titan A.E." (voice).
John Hurt was the one in the chest burster scene in Alien, that's why he says "Not again". For me it shows how genius Mel Brooks is. IF you haven't seen it, my favorite spoof is Robin Hood, Men in Tights. Put that on your list, it's amazing
The little critter coming out of the guy's stomach was an Aliens reference - you'll have to watch Alien and Aliens (the sequel) for a scary October movie this year...:)
Hello Jay & Amber!😊 Zany comedies are really in right now. I know you will get a lot of views with this one. That is Mel Brooks as The President and Yogurt, too. The voice of Dot Matrix is comedian Joan Rivers. Daphne Zuniga (Princess Vespa) is best known from the TV show Melrose Place. The Spaceball with the hair pick comb in the desert is actor Tim Russ who played Tuvok on the TV series "Star Trek: Voyager". "The movie "Alien" (1979) is spoofed in the diner with the creature, and the apes spoof is "Planet of the Apes" (1968). Great reactions to this fun comedy, Kids!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏
As someone else mentioned, the diner scene towards the end is spoofing the movie Alien. The guy that had the alien pop out of his chest was the actor in the movie Alien, which is why he said "Not again." And I find that to be the funnies scene in the movie! Also, the scene where Dark Helmet and company landed on the beach and the monkey guy rode up is spoofing Planet of the Apes. I love this movie and I can literally recite it verbatim from beginning to end. So glad you got around to this one.
I always giggled that Dark Helmet wears a tie. I don't know why that cracks me up so much. The creature coming out of the man's chest in the truck stop is a reference to the first Alien movie starring Sigourney Weaver. The beach scene with the two apes is a reference to the first Planet of the Apes movie starring Charlton Heston.
I'm shocked that J doesn't know Who's on First (it's Abbott and Costello)!! You need to show it to him. A few things about the movie: Lonestar is dressed like Indiana Jones Yes, Valium is a tranquilizer hence the Prince being so sleepy. And J is right, there was a frog on Looney Toons that did the top hat a and cane song and dance. Once you watch the Alien movies and the Planet of the Apes movies, you'll get the references.
i was seeing before commenting if someone did already about the references thay Jay and Amber miss!! also Alien and the sequel Aliens are incredible and a must watch!!
The funny part about Lonestar: George Lucas had a few conditions for Mel to make this movie. One is they couldn't have the main character look like Han Solo. So they made him look like Indiana Jones instead.... George also said they couldn't do merchandise (other than home video releases), hence all the jokes about merch...
Also, I forgot to mention that the last scene where the Spaceballs come out of mega maids nose is actually from the original movie called Planet of the Apes in which an astronaut gets lost in space and land on a planet, where the apes rule and human beings are basically caged animals. The last scene of that movie is the human astronaut, played brilliantly by Charlton Heston, Rides on the beach and comes to what used to be the Statue of Liberty, and he realizes that he is on the earth just in a different reality. That’s a fantastic movie too.
You might want to edit your comment because they haven’t seen planet of the apes yet and you just spoiled it for them. So if they read the comments you just told them the plot line
There’s something my father has told me since I was a kid. “The more you know, the more jokes you get.” This has been a guiding principle of my life. Especially when it comes to movies like this. Like when they’re transforming Spaceballs 1 into mega maid and Rick Moranis says, “ready, Kafka.” He’s referring to a book called The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Or when the alien pops out of the guy’s stomach and he says, “not again.” It was the same actor who had an alien pop out of his stomach in Alien the movie. That’s what makes movies like this so funny. All the “inside jokes” that you find when you re-watch them.
I would recommend two movies by Alex Proyas. “The Crow” is a fantastic film (though it sadly took the life of its lead actor (Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee)). It’s a supernatural revenge film, basically. Dark and gritty. “Dark City” is a dark science fiction film which is so damned good - it is criminally underrated.
Oh, I’d also recommend “Labyrinth,” which is a fantasy film with David Bowie in it and a young Jennifer Connelly. Puppets and puppeteers by Jim Henson’s workshop.
One of my go to movies when I need a laugh. Can never go wrong with Mel Brooks. Jay, you have to take a few minutes and watch the Who’s on First routine by Abbott and Costello. You can’t be a sports fan, and not know this routine!
17:42 - That's an old Abbott & Costello comedy routine waaay back in 1938. I wasn't born yet myself, but when I grew up decades later, they used to always show this comedy sketch on TV a lot.
It is crazy. Yeah Joan Rivers is Dot and Bill Pullman plays the Han Solo type. Daphne zuniga is princess Vespa. Also Mel Brooks is not only the director but he plays yogurt and a few other people. He also directed and starred in young Frankenstein with Gene Wilder
One fact I love to share about the movie.....Mel Brooks mentions in the director's cut that the whole short scene with the "Mr. Coffee" machine was a way for him to incorporate styrofoam cups into the movie. In many of the movies he made before.....he'd have to reshoot whole scenes because cast or crew would love a cup lying around....so with the scene early in the movie he didn't have to worry about reshooting anything if someone left a cup lying around.
Facts:
Mel Brooks went to George Lucas and told him the idea for the movie. He loved it, and said they could use all the Star Wars sets and props, but only on one condition, they could not sell any merchandise. That is the reason for the scene in Yogurt's cave. And the randomly placed product placements.

Daphne Zuniga played the princess. She was an underrated 80's/90's actress who shot to short lived fame when she was cast in the 90's cult show "Melrose Place" which starred Heather Locklear.
This is one of my all time favorite Mel Brooks Movies. There are so many Sci Fi references in it…especially Star Wars.
Lone Star's outfit was inspired by Indiana Jones if I remember correctly
Rick Moranis was one of the funniest villains Dark Helmet was comedy gold in this Star Wars Parody
Also in honey I shrunk the kids
They also saw him as the neighbor in Ghost Busters
Smoke if you got 'em.
You referenced "who's on first" in this and he didn't know the reference. Perfect opportunity to react to it in the future!
Seeing the pop up just literally made me smile. The next Mel Brooks that is an absolute classic is History of the World Part I, you will love it
Omg! Absolutely love History of the World!
Tried to watch the Hulu sequel and couldn't get past the second scene...
@@lawrencejoy2256 agreed. It was awful. The movie was hilarious.
@@lawrencejoy2256 I didn’t even give it a try. No reason to tarnish the legacy of the original
Tbh, I think a lot of it would go by them-you can’t take anything literally in that movie and have to listen to everything because you would miss so much not paying attention.
I have always loved, "You fools! You captured their stunt doubles!"
Make Jay watch the "Who's on First" skit. A classic every sports fan should know.
Agreed. Just what I was thinking. Jay would love it.
@@mecoda21And we wanna see that! 😂
Not just sports fans. Anyone who's any fan of comedy should know Who's on First!!
Just in case, it's performed by Abbott and Costello a great comedy team!
Every comedy fan, too.
"Whos on first" is an Abbott and Costello bit. Its a classic, if he hasnt seen it he should. Its on RUclips
Barf - "I'm a Mog, half man half dog. I'm my own best friend". Always loved that line lol. Mel Brooks (Yogurt) has made so many good movies as you've already seen a couple I believe. Try History Of The World which is another great one of his.
YES!!! been wating for this, i freaking love spaceball so much I come with a warning" NEVER watch this movie with me I will monologue the ENTIRE thing word for word". 😅
Mog - John Candy - rip
King - Dick Van Patten - rip
Dot - Joanna Rivers - rip
"She was last seen passing Jupiter 2!"
That's a reference to "Lost in Space". The ship on that show was the Jupiter 2.
If you guys really like spoof movies, please review "Hot Shots", "Hot Shots Part Deux", & National Lampoon's: Loaded Weapon". You both will love it
the opening scene of loaded weapon is hilarious😂😂
The president is Mel Brooks he was also in Blazing Saddles which he directed as he did this one.
Also Mel Brooks is Yogurt
The diner scene at the end with the guy laying on the table and the alien popping out of his chest is a spoof of the Alien horror movies. The guy that was in this scene is John Hurt and he is reprising his roll from the original Alien movie from 1979 where this same thing happened, hence the line "Oh no. Not again."
Also, I don't know if ya'll know this, but Mel Brooks didn't just direct this movie, but he also played as President Skroob and Yogurt.
Frog (original appearance in the cartoon short, One Froggy Evening)
May The Schwartz Be With You! 😁😉
And don't forget all the "beaming" Star Trek jokes! lol
Which franchise should they watch first? Alien or Planet of the Apes - in both franchises I mean the original movies and the more recent ones, get the full experience for both
I literally only got that Reboot reference just now...
TF!? save me jeebus...
Mel Brooks played The President and Yogurt, and his accent was more Jewish/Yiddish than Brooklyn which is why they used jokes like the Swartz and Drewish Princess.
The doll scene was completely improvised by Rick Moranis.
helmet: "did you see anything?"
sandurz: "no,sir. i didnt see you playing with your dolls again" 😂😂
Lou Costello: " Who's on first?" Bud Abbott: "No 'Who's' on second, 'What' is on 1st" & so on...I highly encourage you both to find a recording of that
Jay especially, as a baseball fan, can get into that.
That was Heather Locklear. A lot of people in the 80s got them confused
I remember seeing this in the theater when I was a kid. The Mr. Video scene is brilliant, and all the gags and puns are All on point! Thanks you guys for reacting to a classic, love your content, keep killin it!
This was the first movie I saw twice in the theater, once with each parent and they both loved it too, especially my dad. "Keep firing, a**holes!"
"How aerodynamic is a Winnebago?" Greatest question ever asked.
The guy that said "oh no not again" as an alien burst from his chest was the same actor who did the chest burst seen in the original Alien movie. 😅
I was just going to say that…and that they need to do Alien. Ripley is such an amazing character.
John Hurt I believe..just guessing
@lifewuzonceezr Yep. Wonderful actor (R.I.P.). Amber and Jay saw him him in the Harry Potter movies, as Mr Ollivander, the wand specialist.
@@lifewuzonceezr yes the actor was John Hurt who also played the War Doctor in Doctor Who. He has since passed away.
@@torontomame jaw drop .thanks
The Twins at about 9:30 are Dian and Denise Gallup. They were the "Doublemint Twins" for a long time. Wrigley's Doublemint gum had always featured twins in their ads. They were parodying themselves therefore, hence why he says "Chew your gum" to them.
Next movie you should check out is Young Frankenstein. It is a Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder movie. One of the funniest ever.
Need to watch the Universal Frankenstein movies from the thirties (3pm them) to really appreciate Young Frankenstein
Most definitely! That movie is hysterical!
BTW...the castle was fashioned from the stunning Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany. Walt Disney borrowed its look too.😃 I've been there and it's breathtakingly beautiful.💗
Going there myself in May. I was stationed in Germany in the 80‘s while in the USAF. Lived at a Gasthaus and was the only American in my village. What a great time,,So now I‘m taking my wife there for her 1st trip overseas. Should be an adventure! Prost!
I thought so! Thanks for confirming it.
Hey I was right without looking it up!
Note that John Hurt holds the record for most on screen deaths.
@@regould221 neat fact
29:16 - Amber "You're not taking the Schwartz serious"
GODDAMN, I never laughed so hard! I freakin' love you guys!
You beat me to the explanations 😅
@@428lonewolf Got to be quick lol. 😂
Also the joke in the diner is suppose to be lame, but if you like Dad jokes it's suppose to be funny due to the word play on the planet Pluto and Mickey's dog Pluto.
@@514chicks Yeah exactly.
I still remember watching this at the theater with my friends. The video scene killed us because people always talk about how fast a movie got released onto videocassette real quick.
History of the World Part 1 and Young Frankenstein should be put on your list for comedies.
My favorite movie of all time
MY favorite part is the rewind video scene so funny.
Hilarious...Mel Brooks and Rick Moranis are ridiculously funny. Stupendous parody of several sci-fi movies, but mainly Star Wars!! ❤
We love you guys, this movie is amazing btw!
Mel Brooks is a genius when doing these movies
Mel Brooks He’s from Brooklyn New York. He plays President Skroob and Yogurt and he’s the Director.
"A few of the movie reverences in this, that you need to watch"
You mean should have watched **prior** to watching this movie,
And that is why Yogurt comes by his Brooklyn accent honestly and legitimately. As a native Brooklynite myself, I can swear it is so.
At the truck stop diner, the alien creature singing "Hello My Honey..." is from the Warner Brothers cartoon called One Froggy Evening.
One of my favorite childhood movies. Mel Brooks makes the absolute silliest movies.
The movie reference you didn't get was "Alien" (where that thing comes out of the guy's stomach). They used the same actor from the original movie!
The cuts to nobody laughing are BRUTAL 😆
Rick Moranis was a well known character actor when this came out. You saw him in Ghostbusters as the nerdy neighbor. You would also enjoy him in Parenthood whuch costars Steve Martin as well as a while slew of well known actirs at the time. You both would enjoy it. Bill Pullman is the actor who played Lone Star. He was the original fiance in Sleepless in Seattle. Thanks for the movie!
I love Parenthood - I think they would really enjoy reacting to that movie. So many big names before they were big!
Bill Pullman was also in WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING, another good rom-com.
He was fantastic in SCTV along with John and many others. His most famous character was probably Bob of Bob & Doug McKenzie.
You need to keep up the Mel Brooks movies! “Young Frankenstein”, “High Anxiety”, “The Producers”, “To Be or Not to Be”(with his wife Anne Bancroft).
I love Mel Brooks movies. This is one of the best spoofs ever made.
The little dancing guy was from Alien, the second one,Aliens Was better. I recommend them
Hello Jay & Amber!😊 Zany comedies are really in right now.
When you watch it as a kid it has much more of a nostalgic effect. Same with growing up with Star Wars and other great films.
"Great value Chewbacca" actually made me laugh out loud. My wife thought I was having a fit. LOL
A few things about the movie:
Lonestar is dressed like Indiana Jones
Yes, Valium is a tranquilizer hence the Prince being so sleepy.
Michigan J Frog
The funny part about Lonestar: George Lucas had a few conditions for Mel to make this movie. One is they couldn't have the main character look like Han Solo. So they made him look like Indiana Jones instead....
George also said they couldn't do merchandise (other than home video releases), hence all the jokes about merch...
It is about time for SPACEBALLS........one of the BEST comedies ever made.
Also, I would recommend an OLD movie with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn called “Charade.” So good.
Oh, I’d also recommend “Labyrinth,” which is a fantasy film with David Bowie in it and a young Jennifer Connelly. Puppets and puppeteers by Jim Henson’s workshop.
If you REALLY want to push the envelope, you should watch “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Meatloaf…
Also, regarding the alien bursting out of that guy’s chest, you should watch “Alien.”
Crow also had a great soundtrack! Such a shame about Brandon Lee 😢💔 I also Love Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story
Valium (diazepam) is a commonly prescribed sedative. So yes, frequent yawning would be a side effect
When you are up for a good scary movie again, you need to watch Alien.
what a classic.
so many quotables !!!
"I'm a mogg, half man, half dog. I'm my own best friend. "
I love this movie!!
The Song the boys were rocking out to in the winebago at the start was 'Raise your hands' by Bon Jovi. Worth doing a reaction for.
Keep the Mel Brooks coming!!! Check out Young Frankenstein for sure!!!😂👍
One of my favorite movies of all time. So many great lines and gags.
Brooks didn't actually appear
in "Young Frankenstein".
