  • After a few years of apparent stagnation, Native Instruments seem to be taking a renewed interest in their DJ software, Traktor Pro. The new version, 3.6.0, brings with it some new features, as well as a subscription offering, Traktor Pro Plus. On the new episode of Beatsource Tech, we check those out, and look at the roadmap the company has provided for the future direction of the app.

As an active Tractor user I see no value in subscription right now.
      1) Pattern player - it's too minimalistic. I can easily replace it with remix deck or Maschine plugged into live input deck. What would sold it to me? If I could launch Maschine 2 in VST mode as a deck without external wiring - that would be awesome!
      2) iZotope Maximizer - as Mojax explained - we don't need any extra compression on mastered tracks. Can be replaced with standalone compressor.
      3) Additional FX - not sure how it would be implemented. If it's just extra FX available with the subscription - it sucks. What I'd like is ability to use VST FX in Traktor and even chain them (similar to how we do it in Maschine). That would make Traktor truly Pro!
Anyway I'm glad that the product is developing and would be glad to see new NI hardware released.

I agree. You kind of have to be able to show consistent development and innovation to warrant a subscription service. I would also like to see traktor come out with a mid-high level standalone unit like the denondj prime4 while being able to attach f1 x1 controllers

I've been a Traktor user for almost ten years and I'm still using it today. Elastic Beatgrids are the *only* thing I want. I play mainly older music, typically 80s, which is often drummed by humans and therefore timing is all over the place. I've invested a lot of money in most of the NI controllers, including DVS so I'm pleased to see some development at last.

Traktor was my first.. I spent more than a decade using it... I started using it less when I picked up the Denon Prime kit as it is standalone.. To date however, Traktor + Xone 96 + Kontrol X1 still sounds better than the dedicated players when rendering at 96khz... As such, very happy to see the product evolve. I personally am not in for the subscription at this time as I don't see a value to it - today. I also would LOVE to see elastic beatgrids. If I were to request future features from NI it would be HID control form Denon Prime decks, and Native SoundSwitch integration

I used Traktor every day for about seven years and in Dec 2019 I was sick of the lack of development… but still LOVE the platform. @Mojaxx nailed it, Traktor is hands down the BEST DJ software for insanely advanced MIDI mapping, and creating a modular custom DJ setup. BY FAR the nerdiest user base and that pushes the DJ culture forward too.
When I arrived at NAMM 2020, I was so upset that NI really had nothing significant to show us (and the booth was appointment only) that I said “I’m going back to Serato for a year and then I’ll decide what platform I prefer.” Then Denon started kicking ass with standalone equipment, so here I am with one foot in Serato world and one in Denon stand-alone gear. I kept my NI controllers, and Z2 mixers purely out of hope for an announcement like this. I’m excited but simultaneously bitter and scarred because they’ve abandoned us before.
Mannnnnn, I rode so hard for Traktor. So damn much for so damn long... To this day, I’ve never had Traktor crash on me at a gig, and had many Serato crashes. If it wasn’t for the radio silence from NI and feeling of abandonment, I’d be all in again with this news alone. I’m going to have my eyes on this very closely and if anyone at NI reads this…
I love this news and product, but I’m afraid you might kick us in the chest again… please please don’t let me down

Elastic Beatggrids are one of the only functions/features (and an option to edit them) needed on Traktor to compete with other DJ softwares out there. The fact that I can do plug & play with most CDJs out there in HID mode (Basically controlling CDJs like a controller) is keeping me from switching to other softwares out there like Serato, Rekordbox and VDJ for the mere fact that it's my most prioritised software for the past 10 years. Elastic Beatgrids can even help with quantizing tracks that's ripped from Vinyl since it doesn't have a set BPM due to external factors. Most of my old school tracks needs constant nudging when mixing in/out from one track to another.
Thanks for your honest opinion and what you contribute to the DJing industry across the world Mojaxx.

I still use a Numark 4trak with an F1 to the side running Traktor 3.6.0. Even tho I have Denon sc6000ms & x1850, I use the 4trak with a surface pro 5 when I'm asked to do house\garden parties 👍. Fingers crossed NI and Denon work on a HID mode together.
Traktor with beatport is a blessing. However the beatport search within traktor could do with some polishing as sometimes I want to only find a label or artist and not the entire BPs catalogue 🧐.... Hopefully this will be looked at.
Also can't wait for the long awaited flexi beat grids so I can play my stored vinyl rips with loops & beatjumps with minimal fuss 👌

Totally agree about the X1MK2. I have two that sit between a Xone 96 and my 1200s. Very flexible, capable, and adaptable setup. All other DVS setups aren’t all that interesting to me because the X1 is just so good.

X1 mk1 was probably the best modular controller made (albeit the ability to truly customise the look eg. Text on buttons). I would have continued to support NI if they continued to support their hardware. Now it doesn't connect to new Macs at all let alone you have to do tiresome workarounds to get it even working on any Macbook updated in the last few years.

I’m a huge Traktor guy! All of this is not really going to get me to fall in love with them again but it’s nice to know they haven’t forgotten about us. I waited years for an update on the Z2 and it never happened… so I bought a S7, and I quickly found out how superior the Traktor program is compared to Serato. Serato takes me back to Feel that Final Scratch had, and it’s okay because the S7 gives the illusion that Serato is a good DJ program but it’s not. My solution was to get a Traktor map for my S7 use the mixer at 20 percent, and have 100% of the Traktor program.
I will use Serato and my S7 together and it works. It’s very humbling. I still wait for Traktor to give me a Z2 MK2 and I’ll sell my S7 in a heartbeat.

I've moved over to serato after using Traktor for 10 years. I didn't see any development from their side as you said and there used to be dj craze and shiftee on board which a big plus for me as a hip hop dj. Traktor used to be also a hip hop dj software and we have seen big hip hop dj names using their software and hardware and doing some crazy routines. At some point they didn't bring any new dj mixer other than the Z2. They stopped there and unfortunately as the technology is moving forward they stayed back from that perspective. So I've bought the Rane 72 a-trak edition and moved on. It was a hard transition after being such a long user of Traktor but it was a necessary move because Traktor was Holding the hip hop DJ's back. I'm happy with this change. I liked some stuff from Traktor which serato don't have but maybe it's something that I got used to and in time it will get better. I still have much respect for Traktor and I wished they would continue their development and I would have never moved on. Hopefully they will get back on track again.

  • @RussFryman

Probably moving on now. I appreciate the roadmap, as it's told me that the things I need most aren't going to be here for a while.
Everyone's talking about the EBGs and I'm all in with that. Traktor pulled split cue from the software in the upgrade from 2.x to 3. I can make that work but it's a hassle and adds 2 more cables and another device. But let's face it - the hardware isn't new, and there aren't many choices out there for traktor software lovers.
The S4Mk3 was introduced 4 years ago and support for others' hardware has vanished. I love Denon hardware. Love Traktor's beatgridding, looping/beatjumping tech, and mapping ability. Between the 2 I've got a moderately remapped kit that works well for me. But I really want to upgrade the hardware. No going to happen. Not with Traktor anyway.
I can deal with the software limitations, but I can't play without a controller. Start mapping out new hardware from the major players and I'll probably come back.

I’m happy than N.I aren’t throwing the towel. I absolutely love the software and after 10 years of DJing I hate the idea of switching to other platforms.
I have a lot of DJ friends with remarks like “when are you going to use CDJs” to which I reply “never, I hate with a passion Pioneer’s software, their quirks and the sound of their FX”. I’m open tho with Prime stuff tho, they are the closest in terms of modus operandi to Traktor.
    I mainly use a S4 MK3 with an X1 MK2, both with a little bit of a custom mapping.
I have to agree with the X1, it’s the most versatile piece of kit I ever had in my life.
Use it as an extension to my S4? Check
Use one or two with an external mixer so I won’t be that annoying DJ with a large footprint on a cramped booth? Check
Use it as an add-on for loops and FX with CDJs in HID? Check
I’m waiting to se if their beatgrid analysis is as spot-on when they’ll introduce flexible beatgrids

I am honestly curious about this. Both Rekordbox and Serato seem to have made things very complicated recently in terms of which hardware unlocks which versions/features like DVS, forcing DJs to either take expensive subscriptions or expensive upgrades to enable, or buy a quite limited set of mixers or controllers. Ironically this is all the more true for the most expensive hardware, like e.g. the Pioneer DJM-V10 which in RB does not unlock DVS, neither does the 9000nsx2, (only DJM-750MK2 and a few other), and in Serato requires a DVS expansion pack or a paid upgrade. Forget about A&H which Serato is largely ignoring, and RB as well.

I'm actually new to Traktor, but it is undeniably the best for scratching and beat juggling and when you need things moving fast to be very accurate. I've been using virtual DJ with a Numark scratch mixer and a reloop neon for almost a year and I'm very happy with that setup. Virtual DJ scratches quite nicely. But the fact that traktor just updated absolutely signs me over to it. It sounds way better in the scratching is Almost real. When I first found virtual DJ and realized how far and away better it is than Serato I never thought I'd find a better software. Traktor seems to be listening to the timecode at a much higher rate than the others

Great news, good on NI. Great to see they’re still invested with Traktor. I moved on, but still open to Traktor winning me back. My reasons for moving on was hardware integration, flex beatgrids, access limitations with hot cues & saved loops,(should be separate and not grouped together IMO) and just felt abandoned. Loved using the step sequencer in Traktor. So great to see they streamlined and enhanced it. I would have paid the subscription fee a few years back, instead of learning a different dj platform, but now I know two, so can’t be mad at that. 😎

As much as I have enjoyed Traktor over the years, these days I even use DJay Pro on my iPhone more often, because it has DVS and elastic beatgrids. I really hope NI push the beatgrid development to first priority status, because that really kills them in a competitive field in my opinion. Honestly, if Algoriddim get cloud sharing of beatgrids working anytime soon so I can properly share libraries without third party tools, that would basically lock me in to them and ditch Traktor completely.

I've had 2 S4's, and I just sold my cdj1000 mk3 in favor of the S4 9 years ago. the S4 still works like a charm, and mated to my old TTX turntables, my friends were amazed, at how the turntables would play digital media files off the laptop! and that was like 10-15 years ago. Traktor is a good product but the Pioneer and Serato alliance attracted many dj consumers all over the world. The S2 too, is built solid, compared to the Mixtrack, and the Pioneer DDJ SB, which is a little more plasticky for controllers during the last decade.

Been Djing 24 years. Went from vinyl using SL 1200's and a citronic mixer to burning CD's and using Pioneer CDJ1000's MK1's and Pioneer DJM mixer, then around 2011, friend of mine got me onto Traktor and I bought a MacBook and the original S4 controller. Gigging suddenly became so much more portable and easy. I Started to miss the feel of a spinning platter though, 5 years ago I bought x2 Technics DZ1200's and a Traktor Z2 mixer which is what I still use today. I love the fact that these ancient original DZ1200 technics CDJ decks that were a complete flop and took technics out of business are now amazing scratch turntables when using DVS on the memory cards. Works amazing with the Z2 mixer, but my back hurts carrying all those in a flight case to gigs. I'd honestly thought Traktor had given up and NI saw their business more in Music production software and hardware. Flexible beat griding should be a walk in the park to design by a company of NI's standards, yet it's what we've all been missing for almost a decade. I can ride it with my DZ1200's like the old vinyl days, but I could never do that with the S4 controller, pitch was too small to get the incrementals rides and the jog wheel the same. I only stuck with Traktor because replacing the Z2 mixer would set me back massively and I love that thing. Traktors software FX are just so good. I have always been envious of seratos vertical music wave grid though. I'd love to see that introduced too. I just think overall NI's development when into music production where Serato new its place and stuck to producing DJ software and saw the advantages of licensing it out to third parties to create hardware like Rane and Pioneer whereas Traktor wants to keep venting in-house. Its a shame because if they really wanted to, NI have the software developers to destroy the competition. I should be a sertao DJ now, and if the Rane twelves were more affordable, I'd switch. Will probably buy them on ebay when the come down in price before NI updates traktor to where it should be...

Big ups Mojaxx! Two things worth mentioning: There is a half off a year subscription TODAY (ending Sept 1). Also the Maximizer isn’t a brick wall limiter. The last two limiters in TRAKTOR were brick wall limiters but the maximizer is much more intelligent and won’t squash your transients like a brick wall limiter would.

    • @Mojaxx
      @Mojaxx 2 года назад

Salute Endo! I learnt how to use the pattern player thanks to your video… ;)
I’ve heard the (non-Traktor) version of the the Ozone Maximiser referred to as a brick wall limiter in the past, so I guess that’s where I got that from. I still think it’s quite a useful descriptive term for those who aren’t too initiated in the production world, even if it’s not completely accurate.

    • @DeeJayEndo
      @DeeJayEndo 2 года назад +1

@@Mojaxx awesome! From my understanding, that's one of the main differences between the Ozone Maximizer and the old Traktor limiters (Classic and Transparent). The old limiters (meaning the ones in the perpetual version right now) are brick wall limiters, whereas the Ozone Maximizer is much more intelligent and preserves the transients. If you set the threshold to 0 dB, then I think the Maximizer is a brick wall limiter, but if you lower the threshold, it starts to work its magic and even raises the RMS loudness. Don't quote me on that, but after reading a lot of information on it, that was my understanding on everything. Cheers!

I guess I consider myself a former Traktor user. I still have my pro 3 license, but I’m just not using it so much anymore.
I did used to use it. It was great, for me, with DVS for example. I had previously used midi maps for my DB4 to perform entire sets right there in the mixer as the only hardware, and not needing to touch a keyboard.
But recently there has just been something about playing with 2-4 decks and a mixer, without a computer being involved.
Don’t get me wrong, I recently fired up Traktor and did both a 4 deck progressive house mix and a 4 deck techno mix using just my K2 and Xone 96. And I enjoyed them immensely.
But I guess im too lazy to keep 2 libraries, and too cheap to invest in a tool that will convert them. So I’ll likely stick with my XDJ’s and a Rekordbox library.
But I will say, beatgrids in Traktor are way tighter than in Rekordbox.

Well I started on Traktor and moved on to Serato since it was missing some things that others were trying to teach me. I was thinking of coming back to Traktor as I like (and own) some of the NI hardware that lives in that ecosystem. Seeing this roadmap I gotta say thats killed off a lot of my desire to come back. The DJs I know are stoked about stems and use them as a good spice, AND Serato as well as RB don't hide them behind subs. Adding a new sub to get access on a feature that the bigger players offer straight out is a complete no go. That one thing along will keep Traktor as a zombie app imo.

Maybe worth the upgrade and give the new software a feel but I've since become a Rekordbox-er. Apart from festivals South African booths just don't cater to additional hardware much. It's easier to just bring headphones and 2 USBs than an entire DVS system + laptop stand + extension chord for a 1 hour set.

Always used Traktor for amateur small house party performances and a few underground raves. It was rad. But my controllers died. Than I had to make a choice. First tried a numark controller, which was really rad, but it worked with Serato, which I just really don't like. Then got a DDJ-400 and things are perfect. The Rekordbox software was already suprisingly good, but got even better, for free, and the controller is also really solid, for somebody of my level. Only the audio out is really lacking on that device. Still. Such a joy to play with.

Current setup is 2x Traktor D2s with a DJM 450. The stem separation interests me a bit, have purchased a few Stem tracks but most of them aren't complex enough to take advantage. Will stick with traktor until or unless throwing lots of $$ at stand alone gear is no biggie and just something fun to try. When I had a pioneer rekordbox controller the lag put me off, I think NI have the snappiest software when you rely on a laptop.

I'm in love with the pattern player. Syncing external drum machines is my thing but it's always been a bit of a faff. And this is just so easy to use. I've even dug out the djtt midi fighter twister and used it for the 4 FX units. There's some great mappings out there for that and it's just brilliant for adding some flare for live stuff. Add all FX units to two spare channels and you get loads of oomph. You are right, using on a separate channel is the way forward. Really looking forward to the additional content coming. I'm on the beta so they gave us 6 months pro for free but I'll be subscribing after that. I'm not sure I've got my head round the limiter tho. It defo keeps the levels tight, you can see that in the recording waveforms but I need to play with it more.... If you are doing things properly you shouldn't need a limiter.... But we all get carried away sometimes...and the idea of this one is it should beef up the sound a bit...but I don't think I've got it quite right yet. Think they need a better tutorial on how it works in depth.

    • @davebrazewell8719
      @davebrazewell8719 2 года назад

Another thing to bear in mind with the maximiser is that depending on how you have your mixer setup it may not apply to the internal mix recorder. There's some notes about it on the NI community forum. I think it only works if you have it setup in internal mix recorder. It's always on the main output if enabled though.

Well for one the MK2 lost the two browser knobs and now you have to use one , The decks are split into left and right which allows you to control either deck far better than one dial which you have to select which side to drop the track into ,Two the cue points show only 4 which you then have to select a button to get the other 4 the Mk1 shows all 8 up front ,Far better for the mixing that i do ,Great to see Traktor making improvements ,Let's hope they can delivery ,
