There is a lot of good literature out there to help.
It is why learning camping basics and acquiring certain items was important to me.

The potential tornado? It tossed a semi truck..I think you can be sure it was not a microburst..thoughts and prayers. I've never seen damage where the debrit were ground to such small pieces.
I hope everyone is safe including pets it very hard to imagine that it came into the night and people had no rest only to get out of this storms way. Today the wind here in Colorado is at 40 miles an hour. It not like a tornado which is different it destroys property and leaves you with nothing. Thinking of you and praying for you.😔🙏

A strong tornado 🌪 in the dark must be terrifying. Glass and other objects turned into deadly projectiles flying all around that you can't see. The smashing and wind noises everywhere in the dark

I'm so sorry for the people suffering, I find this early reporting on this to be a bit cringey, however. Unless you are certain all the victims have been removed from these buildings, you shouldn't be shining lights on the debris. Give these people some space and time for recovery and rescue of victims before you go shining your spotlights on the horror of what is now their town and lives.

Been there. The aftermath of a tornado, especially a very strong tornado is terrible. There are no basements in Mississippi.

Cost to make a home tornado proof as little as $5,000, and that's for a wind tunnel proven home build. It's part material, workmanship, and design. Design is the biggest issue as you have to compromise on details homeowners love and opt for simpler symmetrical forms. Oddly, the cost of building a safe room is cited at $15,000, as you are taking an area inside the building that was being built with cheapest materials, just a few studs and drywall, no special tie downs, flimsy interior door, just a sheet of gyp bd for ceiling AND as it's an extra, it's a profit center for the builder.
We know how to do it, it's doable against all but E5 at modest 1 to 5% inc in building cost. The building industry, which gets to rebuild every destroyed building, often at a premium 'emergency rush' cost, ensure the private orgs gov't has let code creation devolve to never adopt any significant storm proofing of buildings, from raising them to armoring them. Yes, gov't does not create codes any more. The 'big gov't is bad' BS has robbed gov't of taxes needed to even provide sufficient building inspectors to visit every site once a week for an hour, which of course is a joke. In many areas, they simply don't go to sites and there are so few they can't even keep up with application processing. Codes are created by 'non profit' but none the less private orgs whose paid leadership has the same profit motive as any other, big salary, perks, power, glory... and who certainly DON"T REPRESENT THE MASSES. Their 'income' is dependent on gov'ts mandating professionals and building buy their codes, enroll in their courses, buy their programs, join their websites, take their tests (and gov't costs to do all the same for their building officials), oh, and 'donations', and who do you thiink has the most money for donations, and there by have the biggest say..... Builders, developers, contractors, land speculators, product manufacturers whose ONLY goal is max profit by providing the LEAST. So, small gov't = little protection of the public. Who would have guessed?

fyi, the real issue with tornado proof buildings is how to ensure the windows and doors are shut? Often people aren't even home when their homes are wiped out. Did they leave any windows cracked open? If home, it's worse, as they only have time to run to shelter, not run around slamming windows and doors. Once 150 mph plus winds inflate a home, it becomes much harder to ensure it's survival. Nothing is built to resist that kind of uplift. Now is it unreasonable in tornado season to make a pass through the home before leaving to make sure kids closed all the windows. No, but we aren't in an age of responsibility and discipline are we.
