- It’s an absolute honor to be here at Darryl Hollenbeck’s body shop, standing in the presence of a true legend. When it comes to painting cars, Darryl is the Tom Brady of the game-a master of his craft with more America’s Most Beautiful Roadster (AMBR) wins at the Grand National Roadster Show than anyone else. But what makes this video truly special? Darryl is revealing his entire process-every secret, every technique-that makes him the best. From prep to finish, he’s showing exactly how he lays down flawless paint, proving why he’s the greatest of all time. This might be one of the most informative videos we’ve ever made, so if you’re serious about learning how to achieve a perfect paint job, you need to watch this.

Thanks Darryl beautiful shop and great work, thanks Jolene and Chad for taking us along on your travels
Some of us have heard of these builders but Chad and Jolene bring us to their shop and we get to see how they do things,it doesn’t get any better than this !!
🥾👅
This is one o to the best Videos ive seen , most people in Darryl's league of expertise would not explain exactly how they do this kinda work . Most of the professionals in auto restoration would rather take it it the grave rather than pass it along. Darryl is ausome in my book , me im self taught and yes it helps to learn from your mistakes. I still to full on restos for my self , so nice see how the professional does it. Thanks again Chad and Jolene on a great video.
A world apart from a painter working in collision repair. A nice man though - very talented and modest with it. Great video and thank you for sharing.
Geez Chad take note everything in it's place no running around looking for stuff. Great idea !
G'day Chad and Jolene.
Another awesome video.
Very rarely do you get someone in Darryl's league explain his processes. So you don't have to follow him to the letter you keep what you want and throw away the rest. For me I think I'll be keeping everything.
And I'll be certainly saving this video and watching it many times over.
✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.
I love the way the guy admits you have butterflies to start painting I’ve been doing it 53 years and get butterflies every overall paint job too
If you observe Daryl's work area and shop . It's spacious, tidy, well ventilated and organized . With stands and wheel dollies which keeps everything off the floor
Also movable tables and movable well stocked supply cabinet
And he has work tables ?
He is not big on safety as a matter of fact most car builders are not especially using zip cut grinders without masks, shields or even safety glasses I have mentioned it many times to Chad with no avail. Carry on one eye.😮
The reason why he is so open with his process he knows how hard it is to do it correctly and many will not do it because of the difficulty
Chad lives in the middle of nowhere hasn't got access to the do a lot of the stuff available to these top shops so he has learnt to improvise and use what he's got available pretty good to start off in the middle of nowhere and be known around the world congrats to Chad and Jolene cheers Goofy Australia
Yeah live in the nowhere can't afford it been on vacation excuses u should his writer I think I don't know we made a mistake ok awesome lol send him a cake poor guy
Correct 😉✌
Boyd Coddington lived in Idaho, built his first custom as a teenager, then moved California and the rest is history. Where someone lives is a lame excuse for shade tree work.
Notice all these places have work benches and do not crawl around on the floor
Amazing! Now people that you seen how a full restoration paint job is done the "right way" and all the work and time and money involved. Cut Chad some slack will ya! 😉✌
AMEN BROTHER ✌🏼😎💯
I can't stand when people, cut people off. Hearing to respond not hearing to absorb the information. Probably just me that it bothers.
One hell of a car builder
Chad's in school. He's taking what he likes and throwing away the rest. He's got a lot of prep work to do on the Volvo before Ace of Shades comes to paint it.
Where is his stick-on chrome?
That was awesome, thank you Chad and Jolene
🥾👅
Great show. Remember folks paint jobs on $250,000 to over a million dollar builds have a very small audience of paying customers. I’m a huge fan of this level of build and will readily admit that I’m not capable of taking the time (thousands of hours with a team of professionals helping you) to get GNRS results, but like anyone else I absolutely LOVE seeing them set the bar.
Many thanks for sharing. You do and video the best car related interviews. There is real respect shown here from everyone.
Maybe the most fortunate painter. "The best" is out there, somewhere, spraying in the dirt.
Stink block was introduced to me as grill bricks about 35 years ago made for cleaning bbq grills, he is on point grill bricks do not lie it will conform to the shape you are blocking and remove all unnecessary body material of the car i used it with water for blocking the primer. very few people know about this product. Thanks Chad and Jolene for showing all of us a these old school tricks that still works today
Chad & Jolene, i don't know if you knew that Darryl's wife Terri is the sister of Roy Brizio. They are children of Andy & Sue Brizio.
Andy's T bucket won the big trophy in 1970. When Roy was 22 he opened his own street rod shop. His shop has built many AMBR winners. The family is known for hitting the highway in their beautifully detailed cars; no trailer queens here.
In the car culture, Andy is known as "The Rodfather", and the Brizios are known as "The First Family of Street Rodding". Andy, Roy, and Darryl are all members of the GNRS Hall Of Fame.
It's extremely rare, and therefore very kind of someone to show you the " tricks of the trade " like that. I think Darryl can rest easy knowing that his business is under threat for showing a little bit of his wealth of knowledge. But it was bloody nice of him to personally show Chad the workshop and how he approaches a job. Also, I really like the Superbowl ring reference regarding the winning paint jobs, that was bloody clever, and funny.
I meant to say , his business ISN'T under threat. Bloody auto correct.
@@craigwilson4439 I was surprised to hear Darryl say the shop is painting only four cars a year. He likely has plenty on the waiting list and turns away many more.
The best part of a paint job is the prep. Painting seems pretty easy.. as long as it's tits prepped.
This guy is so cool. Great show.
Excellent commentary. Excellent understanding of the process. Excellent. Understanding of the haters.
Congratulations on a great performance today
Thank you Chad and Jolene and of course Darryl! Very informative video. I thoroughly.enjoyed the time he spent going through his process of automotive refinishing. Thanks again!
as always thanks for our trip out and lessons on paint and polish quality
This holiday has been great to see both Chad and Jolene enjoy and hear how much you both have learned from this road trip will be applied to your own business.
🥾👅
Thank you Darryi amd Chad for the instruction. I paint electric guitars and it applies !
Im actually amazed at how many interesting people people you know in the car world.
WOWWWWWWWWWW LOVE GREEN CLASSY F34 FORD BEAUTIFUL COLOE & BEST PAINT. THANKS BRO BAD CHAD & SIS JOLIE FROM DEAF GUY I ENJOYED IT
i could listen to this all day... im saving this to go over and over in my head so i can build my booth/garage in the best way possible. thank you guys for this.. its what i needed.
Daryl is an amazing guy, escially to how he does a paint job, tons of work makes me tired just thinking about it. But for award winning cars they have to be perfect, thanks so much for sharing your visit with us
I found it hard to fathom how much patience Darryl must have to put in weeks & weeks on most stages of his process. Sounded like the actual spraying was the only fast part. Doing just four cars per year highlights just how much effort they put into achieving their craft. It made me realize there are likely engine builders, chromers, upholsterers, etc. who do work at a similar level and no wonder some of those award-winning cars cost millions to build.
I really enjoyed the last 3 guys you visited and interviewed. All were most amazing talented individuals. I liked that they all shared their facilities and processes so freely and we were able to see a lot of their work. Good job to both of you. Keep up the good work.
Ive layed down some nice looking paint with cheap harbor freight guns.
Prep as a must.
Wow I love the 36 in the paint booth the man is very talented thanks for sharing
What a great piece. This episode is so good at helping us understand just how much work it takes to build cars of this calibre. AMAZING! Well done and thanks.
Honesty i tune in sometimes just for the camera work , i love it , the way she pans and floats , the seamlessly smooth movement , IDK i just gotta say i'm a big fan a that aspect !
It's true that she's good at taking pictures.
And I was thinking the same thing that he was thinking, about watching this video a few times and writing the process down, exactly what I was thinking, and then he mentioned that he would be able to have the video, in order to remember the recipe from a master Chef 🏆
Just watching shows how little chad knows about the car building and painting process
Why the hate. Show your work. Chad, like him or not is doing real world stuff for lots of people. You know what one of these AMBR paint jobs run?
He's been doing it all his life you do realize Chad has been doing it for less than 10 years
Good job Chad and Jolene!!!!
Thanks Darryl for letting Jolene film this,Hopefully Chad takes some of this,But most likely won't.
You must remember this is not what bad Chad’s channel is about !!! His channel is to show the average person how they can build a custom car with what they have laying around and relatively cheap. That’s why bad Chad and his queen are millionaires…. They relate to the average person…
Everydays a school day ! Another great show. 👍
Thanks for sharing Chad and Jolene
Just want to say hi to Jolene Chad and everyone hope you all are having a great day God bless and have a blessed night
How cool to hear from literally one of the best if not the best 🎉
Big week of learning and inspiration…👍👍
Learned a ton on this one 🤘🤘
He uses the good stuff, PPG man. 👍
Thanks Chad and Joline for taking us on your adventure to Cali it has been great to watch !👏👏
Wow! That was a great show! Thank you.
Funny,I have painted cars since I was 16 years old,so about 36 years and I had never heard of Darryl. Most of the guys I learned from are definately masters of the craft and prefer to be anonymous! Cool guy though.
Yeah there's thousands of great painters out there that nobody knows. You wanna see some wild custom paint check out Fabian "Candyman" Villarreal.🔥! 😉✌
All those processes Darrel uses, I use too, so do most of the other body guys that I know, I made the transition to epoxy a few years ago, and not looked back, trying to get too much epoxy in one place is a no no though, it doesn’t like excessive depth
Go through those processes Darrel does will produce incredible results
Sure you do 🙄🙄. Hater.
Chad & Jolene, Thanks for this very informative video interview with Daryl. I learned a few things, grits, wet- dry; slick sand. Now I have to find stink block. Great thanks again. R/T
Incredible, what a treat!! Thank you SO much Chad Darryl and Jolene for sharing. What a room of inspiration :)
My college car was a '61 Plymouth Fury my Grandfather sold me for $50. I had a dream one Friday night that I painted it black and yellow Greek stripes with 4" rollers. In the morning I went to the hardware store for paint and rollers. I'd start with black in the middle of the door and paint an expanding square. Then I'd fill in the un-painted 4" gap with yellow. I did the same on each door, the hood, top, and trunk. On the rear end I painted "Love Inn." I filled the back seat with empty un-rinsed beer cans that attracted bees once in a while. Chad and I are kindred spirits.
Great week show Chad😎 thanks guys , and more of thoes 💯💯
This must one of the best videos you've had on the channel this guy knows his business 👍, Chad you should rewatch this episode many times over and learn . Big respect to you for showing this and if you only do a few things shown it will improve your paintwork .
Fantastic!! What a great guy to share his knowledge with all of us. Thank You
So cool! What a priviledge to see the inner workings/shop of a Master craftsman. Thanks for the insight Chad! ❣
Wow great video….very explanatory and in depth that he was willing to give all this information to Chad! Nicely done!
You guys are killing it with these quality, interesting and informative videos with amazing hosts, just excellent!
Best painter in the world 😂
how many times that been flat and polished before he sat it in the booth for this 🤙🏻
6 coats of clear😂😂😂😬
@ Should of gone to lucky 7
That 36 Ford is freaking amazing!
Top of the line!
Chad the duel headed spray gun is for spraying material that needs to mixed on contact with a surface. such as mirrors for silvering or chroming 🙂👍 you can google that fact.
1:03:40 incredible compliment from one master to another. Incredible videos lately Chad & Jolene
Thanks for showing us some other shops. Can learn a lot from how others do things great to see thanks.
They only do things one way and that of course would be the right way. It's an excellent work ethic!
That was an awesome video. Thanks for sharing the process and the mutual respect shown.
Thank you all so much..such great information from the best in the game..wow
I love this... I grew up in the 1970s .. Hot rods.. never knew how the older uncles did this...😮
Mind Blowing!!!
🤯🤯😁
Bad Chad: "I use paint rollers".
Funny, so do I.
Is there any other way when the previous owner rhino lined the outside of a vehicle.
I may spray it, but my neighbors don't want red cars and the wind has been blowing here like it's Chicago.
Ten thirty. Brooms work well
Yawn
Step 1 organize your shop and get proper tools and work tables.. Your shop represents your workmanship...
the tattoo of the lawn mower taking of his hair is awesome
The stick block looks just like the brick used in restaurants to clean the griddle
Daryl is very humble
Thanks again for sharing this video bad Chad and Queen Jolene !!!
Superb video entertaining and so informative I’m never going to take a car to that level but now I know what it takes. Great questioning and vibes from Chad kept it fun too. One of your best IMO
Chad is listening intently because he is never going to use this method ever 😅
You shouldn't say that mate. We're all always learning, even Darryl I suppose. I've seen Chad do some things I don't agree with, but that's how we learn .
It's a lot of work it's a art it's car guys taking pride what they do
Very Humble guy!!!
The last Rodder's Journal cover (on the right), is absolute favorite Hot Rod of all times, great craftmanship
Chad, no matter what you think of him, has made a lesson from a distinguished, master class professor of the craft
A good learning day here for Chad.
Yeah isn't this great of him to be so humble and do that?
@ for sure, Chad does well but like all of us there’s obviously lots for him to learn to take the next step.
Chad will take what he likes to the rest away
Deadly video Chad andJolene. Thanks for doing that for us.
Darryl is the man!!!
Thanks for the wonderful informative video…
I struggle to paint a wooden fence with a paintbrush. That's dedicated to your craft.
I don't see Chad doing any of this lol
He's by himself he would be doing 1 car a year like this .And you heard him he's been doing this all his life they don't modify or build cars they do body and paint only there is 3 of them full time and only do 4 cars a year
@BillMac69 I'm not criticizing. It's just not how Chad does things. Also tedious body work doesn't keep viewers attention.
Awesome, Thanks
Amazing. I took notes!!
Does this guy paint the rubber part of the running board
Another fantastic interview! I said it the other day, and I’ll say it again… you really are superb at interviewing these guys and in particularly people doing aspects that you yourself know well like paint, fabrication, bodywork. Top drawer stuff! 👍I would be happy if you split you time 50:50 with this vs fab on your own stuff
AWESOME!
That insulation is used in boiler room ceilings
I like this video.
Im sure Chad would have to upgrade his paint booth before any of these steps would be done.
Chad and Jolene will be able review these videos for reference points and review on future projects.
And probably not the only one, Darryl's a smart cookie!
Love seeing all this thanks guys
