i like the idea of pam or cooking oil instead of WD40, i have pets and i know WD40 isnt that bad for humans, no telling what it could do to the small body of an animal.
@@professorpenne9962 Absolutely, people forget about things like that. Easy to be safe this way
@@wicker2606 Thank you very much
I like the ceramic coating for car paint instead of pam. Wipe that stuff on all painted surfaces, wait a bit wipe it off, and BAM. Best $20 spent, and it has lasted 2 seasons so far and have 3/4 of a bottle left.
Great tips - thanks. I use cheap furniture polish I get from the dollar store for a buck a can. Works great. I use it to clean the bugs off my motorcycle helmet visor and it leaves a slick surface when it rains so the water beads up. It also cleans my bike of bugs.
I have had my Ariens snowblower for twelve years now, and in that time, I have been spraying my entire machine (excluding the motor) with WD-40 prior to going out and clearing the driveway. The unit itself looks like the day I bought it! This process not only keeps the chute and the tunnel free of ice and snow, but it also prohibits rust. As I said, the machine looks mint for its age. This is a menial task for the longevity of your investment. Just food for thought. Cheers!
Great tips and info, glad it's holding up like that.
You have a real talent for making mundane topics very interesting with high quality, high production value videos. I’ve been using my machine for over 30 years here in Westchester NY, and I STILL found your video interesting/entertaining enough to watch all the way through.
Well done, once again!
That is such a nice comment I really appreciate that a lot. Glad you like it and found it helpful
That is a nice comment!
100% agree. I've been in the landscape and snow removal industry for 20 years and I'm still amazed on how much I have yet to learn. Definitely a great channel.
Pam spray is good, but WD-40 is much better. Not only will it help prevent clinging & clogging, it help with existing rust as well as preventing future rust. Finally it will melt snow and ice, I actually use it to melt ice from locks all the time. It may cost more than pam but does a lot more for your buck. I get the wide spray can 1 or 2 passes and done! I usually put a quick coat each time for best results. BONUS: Spray your shovels too! Will keep snow from sticking to it.
Neither one work you have to keep reapplying.pay the money one application with the Dupont done
@@yur-moms-undies And DONT use vegetable oil spray. It rots and causes slime build-up.
@@yur-moms-undies WD40 works I use it. Sorry but not a big deal to give a spray before I use. I always have ton of it so I'm good thanks.
@@mr.mister9953 Never heard that 1 before, but I can see how it would work as well.
WD-40 isn’t grass or plant friendly. Come spring, you’ll be in for a surprise. “Patches of dead grass”
Simply stated, logical approach, little to no technical knowledge required. BRAVO!
Thank you very much
Great ideas! I have a snowblower that has a worn-out shoe, and I can't believe that I never thought of turning the shoe upside-down. This is a great video!
Thank you, glad it was helpful.I hope it can save you some money too
AND...after you've WORN OUT 2 sets of SHOES...
and there are NO rounded curves to SIT on...
SANDWICH a 3/4" piece of PLYWOOD between 2 FLAT shoes that you were about the THROW AWAY.
Remount.
Do same for other side.
Thrower actually then rides on the 3/4" PLYWOOD and the thin thickness of the remaining shoes.
and don't forget to pull each wheel and put anti seize or light coating of grease on axel and wheel where shaft goes through. Could save you much aggravation and money in the long run
Great tip, they can take a beating with all the salt too. Great idea!
Like that hot sauce commercial, I put that s+#% on everything!
Pam is also used to help snow slide off your boat shrink wrap. Must be the season for Pam. Very informative, clear, and straight to the point instructions.
That’s a really awesome idea. I haven’t heard that but that makes total sense. Thanks for sharing.
Good advice !! Most folks don’t know these small tricks !! I’ve been doing the same to my snowblower for years !! I use a commercial silicone but WD40 works great too !! I not only apply the silicone to the chute and auger areas, but the entire painted surfaces on my snowblower, kinda like waxing a vehicle so the machine does not rust !! Oil change is important too and regular intervals are important. I always check the level before every time before starting to make sure the level is not low.also if the machine has a fuel shut off I turn the fuel off and let the engine run out of fuel before putting the snowblower back in my garage. That prevents any fuel from going bad and gumming the carburetor,a big problem if you don’t add Sta Bil in your fuel !!
I live in Florida and bought a snowblower just because of this video.
Moved from natick mass, to Florida, then to Missouri ( Heath reasons, M.S. body couldn't handle the heat anymore). I do miss Florida, the ability to buy a lawnmower 360 days a year.
Funny comment about buying a snowblower after watching the video! I was in sheridian park elementary when it snowed in Florida, the school left the school out early that day. Its snowed only a handful of times in the past 52 years though. Twice in broward county, and the other 3 times were in northern Florida.
I live in Canada and bough a snowblower in June.
This made me literally lol
Thanks
Now you can defrost your refrigerator .

Fantastic video! Great tips explained clearly and efficiently. And thank you for no off-topic digressions!!!
Hi great tips on maintaining snowblowers .. well done I'm going to do exactly what you said tomorrow.
Since I have a Blower on order with a tractor I've just purchased I've been researching methods of keeping your chute unclogged in wet snow. First rule of Wet Snow Snowblower club is to not go to fast. Anyway the best way to prevent clogging is doing a modification to attach rubber strips to the second stage impellers to extend them all the way to the housing. This makes sure that snow can't build up on the gap between the housing and impeller and also allows more throwing power with extended impellers. There are several youtube videos on this mod.
As far as cooking spray vs teflon vs WD-40.......People seem to swear by Silicone spray you can buy at Walmart for like $2. If you spray multiple layers over a couple of days it acts as a barrier between the metal parts of the blower and the snow.
Really enjoyed your three tips. They look like a really big help.
So says the man from Florida.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
Thank you!
I wax the metal surfaces before the winter season. My single stage snowblower has a rubber auger so I spray ArmorAll on the auger blades and other plastic pieces to help snow slide off easily.
The Best Fix it Video on RUclips. Easy to understand. Even better no links for me tobuy stuff. Thankyou
Thanks for the tips. I used the same ones on my Honda Snowblower and it's going on it's 18th year in service.
Thank you very much
["Honda... 18th year..."] ==> Yippee, whippie-fukkin'-skippy! The Simplicity 860 outside has Briggs 1969- "code" engine. FIFTY YEARS of service an going strong. Honda's engines are fine, but their eqipment's for pussy-woosie-light-duty service.
I actually drill and tapped the housing between the three bolts for auger and installed a grease zerk to keep lubed. And sice I do gravel drives I drilled out the one skid shoe bolt 1/2 inch and doubled nutted a bolt to hold a skinny Harbor Freight 1/2'"rubber wheel to keep scraper bar out of stones. The end of bolt is drilled for clip to hold washer and wheel on and come off in seconds when not needed.
Great tips. If you have a gravel drive I would recommend 3/4" clearance to the ground. Any less and you'll be replacing shear bolts constantly and throwing stones.
Very good advice and info!
Saving the world one video at a time
Thanks, I appreciate that!
I was pretty skeptical before watching the video, but I'm pleasantly surprised. Thanks for the advise!
Thank you I really appreciate it
Glad I came across your video. I just bought an Ariens snow blower as my 1st ( got sick of shoveling ). I’ve been meaning to adjust the skid shoes and needed an easy way of adjusting them evenly. The double quarters trick is perfect. I’ll now also be checking the tire pressure and coating it with pam as well. Thanks again ! Great video.
Thank you for the nice comment, glad it was helpful.
I did the trick with the shoes and it worked so much better!
Thank you very much on these three very important tips since I finally got a snow blower similar to yours. B4 I have always use the shovel. Im excited to use mine for sure!
Thank you very much I really appreciate it
Thank you AGAIN for another for another great video SC!
Thank you so much
I use my snowblower on pavers and also on a Azek composite deck and so I cut the skid plates down and installed two roller blade wheels. Also have a thick rubber wear strip on the back . Nothing gets scratched and It still works great on blacktop and concrete. Actually moves easier with rollers.
Sir, that was perfect advice and 100% correct.
This video is AMAZING. Iam definitely going to try the Pam on my troybilt. Thanks so much for the informative information.
Thank you so much glad it helped!
Liked and subscribed. At last tips I can do myself. Thank you! 👍
I use a Teflon spray in the chute and auger. It’s a dry spray, and it coats the metal and makes it very slick. I used to work for a chemical company, and we sold the Teflon spray like crazy in the winter. Even the state guys used to spray their plows with it. I ordered some last year on Amazon.
Me too, I live in CO and when we get wet snow, it really helps
Does Teflon ever break down or does it stay in the environment?
@@trjb1767 you will need to reapply after so much exposure over time.
What brand of spray?
@@gordstarko7879 the stuff I used was not available at a big box store. I used to sell it. But there are Teflon sprays available.
Good video. Great tip on setting the auger height. I always wondered what the "rule of thumb" was to determine that. Thanks! I'll have to try the PAM trick as well. You did forget 2 other key items for blower prep. #1: CHANGE THE OIL! Always change the oil the beginning of the season. And #2: Hit all the grease zerk fittings. Enough said on that. Great tips again tho!
1 thing to consider tho about Pam is that since it's actually a food product it'll go rancid so it smells after a while. Especially if you spray for storing the equipment. Super Slick works well. So does mineral oil.
Mineral oil, great suggestion! I honestly never thought about using it, I only thought about wd40.
We put our used motor oil in a garden plant sprayer. About 20 Pumps and Slather Everything in the auger housing & chute. All Lubed up & Good to go!
All good suggestions. I fix small equipment and prefer to set that scraper gap a bit wider. Most driveways are not mirror smooth and this gives the scraper just a bit more clearance on those uneven spots. I use a set of wood shims placed under each side of the scraper. Snow has a tendency to adhere to itself anyway and you'll find you have a fairly clean surface even with the wider gap.
good tips. I've been using Silicone Spray for years. All of them do the same, but it's amazing how many folks don't know about this trick.
Thank you very much, that is a great tip too for people to try! Thanks
@sploofmonkey Give it a try. If it doesn't work, spray it clean with brake cleaner. BTW, I also use Silicone on the snow shovels. I also used it, many years ago, on the kids sleds. Made them super fast.
@sploofmonkey can't make it too easy. Then the handy-impaired won't come to us for answers
This was GREAT! The BEST boyfriend I've EVER had is my El Toro Power Max! He shows up every time!

Ok - I just went out and tuned up my machine with your recommendations - very cool - thank you
I didn’t have Pam so I used white lithium grease spray - expecting fun times tomorrow - yes! Bring it on!
Perfect idea im going to try the pam on my snow blower thanks
Thanks for the handy tips and good visual instruction.
Great tips. Thanks for sharing. My snowblower always clogs when I get to the end of my driveway and encounter salt treated heavy wet snow that the town plow pushes in. I'll definitely be spraying it with PAM ahead of the next snow storm.
Very Informative. Thank You for taking the time to make this video. Good things to you.

@@SilverCymbal The part with the flat tires and the 2 quarters that was like an AHA MOMENT. Your 3 tips are worth their weight in gold. Thank you!
great job SMART WAY TO SNOW BLOW, hectic snow showel Job beacome so easy, economical and quality efficient
Lower tire pressure gets you more traction. I had a very old machine with dried out tires and I could run it at 0 pressure and the tires would still hold the machine up. It was also a small 2 stage. Only weighed 130#.
Excellent video, thanks much
I think greasing the auger shaft and also removing the shear pins to make sure the auger blade rotates freely should of been part of the video. Also, I use Maxima SC1 as my non stick spray. MX racers are known to use it on the fenders and frame to keep mud from sticking to the bike. On the Ariens, especially auto turn models, it's important to make sure the auger housing and the transmission housing are properly aligned. Ariens has a video on how to do this, and you'd want to do this before adjusting the scraper height.
Take two pieces of wood, like cedar shingles. Measure them at the same thickness and Mark a long across them. Put those under your blower intake lower lip at the marked line and then loosen and adjust your skid shoes. Using two balance points means that both skid shoes get adjusted exactly the same way. Also, you can weld added metal onto the worn skid shoes and ground a bevel on the leading edge so they don't catch on any ground surfaces. I've been using both techniques for decades and saved a bunch of money on skid shoes
very good video, thanks!
great tips, thanks.
Not sure if you’ve made similar videos but I installed two LED floodlights on the dash of my ariens (similar machine to yours) and it has made a major difference of being able to see clearly in pitch black nighttime snowblowing. Wired mine through a double pole, single throw switch to my heated handgrips and then there is the auxiliary power for the floodlights through the battery of the snowblower. Amazingly helpful when filling gas or unclogging the chute or etc. See and be seen is really prominent after installing those floodlights.
I love this tip, awesome idea. The old bulbs are good but as you say they just can only put out so much light.
Great ingenuity. Love this kind of thinking. I just wear a headlamp but this idea is so much better.
Listen& Learn-My snowblower doesn’t have factory installed lights. Is it possible to install led on mine or do I need to wiring from factory installed lights?
Brent Paris Look on the right side of the unit near the electric starter if you have one, if the unit is setup for lights or heated grips there will be a wire somewhere in that general area, if you have the wire you can add 12 volt items, if there is no wire, then the generator was not built in to the system.
My Craftsman has no wire, I’m going to use my dormant motorcycle battery to power two 4 watt flood lights with it, and just plug it in to a charger when finished using it, this will help keep the battery cycling instead of sitting around on a float charger all the time, hopefully I will get dual use out of it...
Use a headlamp
Good job

Probably didn’t put new oil in 😂
I just used my snowblower for the first time today on 9” of heavy, wet snow. I got about half of my extremely long, ribbon driveway done and then the chute got clogged and would not expel the snow. Rock hard bricks of snow were coming slowly out of the chute. I called my Dad and he said “spray it with WD40” and I said that I didn’t have any, so he said “ use cooking spray”, which I did have but had to b to work soon so I shoveled the rest of the snow and now my whole body hurts 😿. We are in another winter storm watch for a storm this weekend and I am going to try all of the tricks in this video to get my snowblower working well again, thanks!
Sorry to hear about the snow! But we live the same thing here too. Glad the video was helpful and I hope it makes life a little easier
Try the impeller modification to close the gap in the impeller housing thus having less clogs.
Good tips I just bought a DR XL30, I haven’t used it yet I think I will try waxing it being it’s new. But I will definitely check tire pressure skids and scraper depth.
Thank you. Theee tips and the basics go a long way for machines. So many get adjusted badly and grab and clog. I hope this gives you a little easier of a winter.
I just wanted to drop a line here and say I that I just used my blower to clear my drive of 24" of snow and have been spraying the blade and chute with WD-40 because of this video. The best advice I had in a long time. I think I have postively commented here before, but its just that great! Now what am I supposed to use that plastic spoon for now? Oh well defeat one devil to summon anohter... :)
THANK YOU for this video. Wish I would've watched this WEDNESDAY NIGHT before we got 8 INCHES!!! I know what to do next week if we get more snow like they are saying.
Thank you!!
God bless you man
Good amazing, thank you very much for information interesting
make Impeller Mods - they RULE !
some now say to use car wax or a ceramic coating in the chute to help keep the snow from sticking in the chute
Add a video about impeller sweep extentions. Absolutely the best thing I have ever done to my blower, cost me about $15 and 45 minutes of time. Works great when the heavy, water laden snow shows up. And I switched to skids with wheels in them, day and night difference. They cost more but with minimal maintenance last for a long, long time.
Wow i love it
Thanks!
Great channel
Awesome advice
Thank you
You have educated me, thank you, great video...……...
Thank you very much I appreciate the kind comment
I really experimented with the sacrifice plate adjustment from the recommended 1/8" to smaller gaps and finally settled on letting it lightly rest on the surface and tighten them down there. When I left any measurable gap the job it does clearing the snow drops significantly. I suspect my methods does wear it out faster, not that I ever wore one out, but I think after a little initial scraping it ends up ground to just right to really give you a clean path. I also never adjust it unless it has worn enough to start leaving snow behind.
Hey on a side note, I have always used WD40 on all of those surfaces you use Pam on, usually hitting it real quick before using each time also. Have you tied WD40 and compared how they work? Do you do it each use or just once a season? Great tip on the tires, mine for some reason always seem to lose air over the summer, every winter I need to top them off.
Try adding a snowblower impeller kit you add small pieces of rubber to each impeller and your snowblower becomes more efficient. You can make this kit out of scrap rubber just make sure each impeller kits the same amount weight.
Great tips! Add more weight as well if your snowblower is too light. I have a kind of a steep driveway and not that big snowblower. I experianced that the knife didn’t cut the compact snow if a car drive over the snow, and it had poor grip as well. I used my old diver belt with 2x5kg lead wights and fastens it around the 2,nd stage. It transformed the way it cut and provided more grip as well. You might not need a big snowblower, you might just need more weight on it.
Thank you 3 tips I did not know about..........
How you store your machine in the off season is extremely important. I took out my Ariens two days before we got a snow storm and it wouldn't run. This was in spite of the fact that I ran it completely dry of gas last year and removed all of the gas from the float bowl via the 10mm drain plug. The residual ethanol was enough to block the carburetor jets. I had to remove the carb and clean out the jets with a welders tip cleaning tool. This year I am going to run it dry, then run it dry again on Tru Fuel, with Stabil.
hey just start it up every 3 months , run it for a few minutes ,
