Okay, if we're interested in digging through the smartphone failure bin (and I am...), could you do a deep dive on the Amazon Fire Phone? Like just imagine if that thing had been even half decent, or if all its weird depth sensors and cameras were actually able to achieve a personalized 3D perspective. RED, eat your heart out.
Everyone else: pixel fold, tablet, and 7a! Snazzy Labs: Red Hydrogen One!!!! And that is why I love you. I was thinking about this phone recently and it's fun to see that thought materialize.
My core memory of the Red Hydrogen phone is Marques really selling it HARD. i think that was a reminder about evaluating tech products as they are with current firmware and all, and NOT on what they might get in the future.
Probably you remember it that way because he posted 3 entire videos about it pre launch before making his review. Definitely built up hype that amounted to nothing.
To be frank I remember the contrary, without having rewatched his past review. Ever since the Hydrogen he keeps telling to never buy a phone based on a promised future update, which I think holds true.
He did, before he got one to review. He’s a Red user, after all, and he got taken by the hype. But the phone was so bad, that he really had to dismiss it, or he would have lost his credibility, with everyone else panning it, such as Arstechnica, and others, such as the photo sites.
And that is RED for you… well at least Jim lead RED. He wasn’t particularly healthy for the camera community. Lots of REDUser drama over the years. Plus not to mention the extremely confusing camera systems and upgrades and oh the delays. Things never came out on time. Also the mini mags being just rehoused drives which LTT infamously showing. With that said RED did give the camera industry a kick in the pants with the RED One. Then we got the Nikon D90 and Canon 5D MKII.
@@ShadowRubberDuck probably negative. I like red cameras but their business model is very litigious. Another example. Most cameras can’t have compressed raw video in-camera because RED sues any camera manufacturers who attempts to do the same.
I think ultimately reds biggest problem is that their camera technology was to costly to apply to a smartphone and the fact that the smartphone market was already overcrowded.
Interesting, I remember when this came out, I totally forgot the whole phone was about the 3D screen. I get wanting to make a phone that is “different”, but man what if the company that makes cameras would have focused on making the best smartphone camera in the industry first, then maybe V02 or V03 they could have focused on the 3D stuff.
I doubt they can make the best smartphone camera in the world even if they tried to. Just doesn't have the software engineering capacity to out google google or out do apple.
Well deserved. I appreciate everything RED has done for the camera industry. But they did some major c*nt moves like patenting something they did not come up with (which is the case in RED vs Nikon) and are pretty much parent trolling at this point.
@@NovianLeVanMusic"Last May, RED sued Nikon for illegally copying its data compression technology in the Japanese camera company’s massive 2.0 firmware update for the Z9 camera. That was the best video I have watched on youtube in quite a while. I remeber being in a Verizon store and holding one of these in my hand. It felt so solid and substantial. So very different from the delicate, slippery glass slabs that still prevail today. I was just about to buy one but decided to wait until the weekend. Then... discontinued! I dont know why but i still want one of these!
I bought one in 2019. Enjoyed it, but less than a year later there was ZERO support for it and Red pretty much disavowed it entirely. Pissed me TF off because I spent $1300 for it. In hindsight I should've waited longer but my previous phone was on its last legs and this looked like the coolest of what was currently available.
Good video but I wish you had more front facing shots of the devices. Its great that you are giving in depth reactions to the technology, But all I see is a off center dark screen.
Saw one of these at Verizon store when new. I was floored by the 3-D effect. Way higher rez than Nintendo's 3DS... but much more expensive. Wanted, but could not afford. I suppose a bullet was dodged. I've got an iPhone XR instead and... its still my primary. I doubt I'd still be using the Hydrogen if I'd gotten it back then.
A good comparison will be between this Red which came out in 2018 and the Motorola phone which had a similar if not exact 3D display back in 2012 or so. It kinda just feels like Red just saw that concept a few years too late and just invested in it lol. ( I still couldn't find which Motorola model had that just remember playing with it as a friend of mine had it when it first came out.)
Clicked so quickly. This was one of the first BIG tech flops to drop after I started to really focus on tech super closely. Shocking that this was ever even brought to market.
I wonder if Leia 3D tech made it into Lego Super Mario? As you just described the eyes 3D effect... Which while awesome can get creepy when you notice Lego Mario looks at everyone in the eyes including cameras at the same time.
Phone like these make me wonder what goes through the heads of the higher ups. Did they think the "Red" brand was that strong? Did they think the gimmick of the Fire Phone/3DS would somehow be worth it this time? Did they think promises of future features would make people buy their phone now? How out off touch do you have the be to not can this?
The phone was the founders baby and it was supposed to be part of a whole eco system that surrounded the phone. Dead cameras had a whole video on it. The phone was supposed to double as a viewer for a new camera. They had also designed a system to view 3D cinema footage on the red phone to give you an approximation of 3d footage you've shot, replacing a viewer and solving one of the key issues of shooting 3D. The idea was that you'd be able to have more idea of what 3D footage would look like instead of having to watch it in 2D and try and work it out. Obviously that didn't happen, and probably wouldn't have worked very well even if it had. But that was the idea. It'd be a key part of a new eco system.
I can see a bunch of missteps in other areas since they were new to the smartphone game but having a bad camera seems unbelievable. The one thing they should have excelled at. This also serves as a cautionary tale for other companies not to get overly excited and start promising the world. Wait until your product launches and actually become successful to start talking accessories and future support. Yes I understand that's not how marketing works but still.
