For smother transitions even more like airbrush use makeup sponges, they are softer, more delicate texture than regular kitchen sponges and have much smaller "bubbles" which help to get softer, more gradual transitions. Nail decorators use them to get smooth transitions between colours with jaw dropping effect and efficency. Cheers and thanks for awesome tutorial of great technique for mini painting :) Keep on doing such materials :D
This might be my favourite tutorial from you (and I rate all your tutorials extremely high). Next army project I'll try sponging + oils for sure! One improvement suggestion though. Have you considered listing the paints used in the video tutorial somewhere? Video description/beginning/end. Sometimes it's a bit arduous to find the specific point in the video where you mention the paint that you're using.
top tip for sponge painting and chipping, when using a kitchen sponge, check its not the last one in the cupboard or your wife may kill you :) thanks for a great guide on painting scars
If you’re doing a batch I’d recommend reverse action tweezers for the smaller piece of sponge, ie ones you squeeze to open. Your hands will thank me for it 😂
This is a cool technique, when I've done this I start with the smaller sponge first to get into tight spots. That way when its time for the big sponge on all the outer areas, it will cover up any sort of scrape or slide marks the small sponge made trying to squeeze into the cracks.
Did you varnish it before the oil wash? Then it’s white spirit to take it off with the cotton buds? Then varnish again after? Thanks for the great tutorial - love you models and has inspired me to get a jet bike (or rather a few…)
Lovely video! I would love to see a video where you would do an tank on an scheme of like your ultramarines done with speedpaints/contrast and even sponge, without using an airbrush. It would be interesting video, since I find doing an similar scheme to tanks while using contrast or speedpaints to be awfully difficult without an airbrush. Also hoping someday an Black Templars video😆
Hey Mr. Rob, I was wondering if you tackle salamanders infantry in the future? I love the way you did those rhinos and it would be cool to see how you do the infantry.
Great video! I have been desperately trying to find a way that I can do my Scars army without an airbrush and I think this method is great! But just would like to check, as I have never done sponging before. With these air paints, do you take paint off with a kitchen towel before applying to the model or do you go straight onto the model?

I was really considering going scars for heresy so this comes really in handy

Oooooh that's a great idea!
it baffles me that you can do that with a sponge, amazing work
INSANE this was done with sponging. Fantastic job!
Quality tutorial. Hit that subscribe button like it was Erebus' face.
looks really cool and effective Rob :) love the grimey dirty effect too
Fantastic! Love your process.

Fantastic guide, thanks😁👍🏻
This is your best one yet! The mix of metallic speedpaints that you used on the engine housing and other details is superb.
So glad you enjoyed it!
That came out great.
Beautiful! What’s your skin tone recipe?
Good job dude👍
That’s unbelievable for 90 minutes. I need to give the sponge and oils a go.
Looks cool.
Very Nice looking scheme, and not so difficult it seems. I enjoy all your tutorials, and its great that you do more than only aurbrush ones
Thank you very much!

Hi, great vids, thanks for the great input! Could you do an Iron Warrior and Custodes perhaps?
There's 2 iron warriors tutorials on here already my dude. Custodes...perhaps next year!
This as awesome.
Defo gonna give it a try on my 57 jetbikes
Which paints did you use in the oil wash please?
Love how these fads cycle around. Was waiting for sponging to come back.
Mini looks great though.
Thanks mate. Sponging never left my arsenal I have to say. I did it with my world eaters back in the day and have done several videos on it since.😊

Hi Mike! I was only thinking this morning of doing that! It will likely be when the new battle group boxes drops
I’d love to see how you would tackle airbrushing a marine that is holding a gun across his chest. It would be cool to see how you paint around it.
Hey Rob, did you varnish the model before doing the oil wash?
I'm worried about the cotton bud maybe scratching off the red underneath?
Could you do Sons of Horus with this technique?

Good question. I just slightly dabbed it on my desk actually!
Cool
No. You're cool!!❤❤❤
What brand of oil paints are you using?
How thin are the paints when doing this sponging!
Was this primed first?
Ryanair? Come on mate, don't seel yourself short, you're at least Jet2.
Thank you for not priming, it’s a massive waste of time.
Great video, I can't believe it was so straightforward
