- Your feet are easy to ignore when you can't feel them. I've made the mistake of not caring for my feet in the past and paid the price in the form of ingrown toenails, pressure sores, and skin breakdown in between my toes.
In this video I share with you the things I've learned about keeping my feet healthy and the simple things I do to prevent sores!

This is completely out of the ordinary for me but I’m glad I came across your channel… I may have been drunk and can’t really figure out how I ended up here but I’m hoping this channel blows up. I may give you a shoutout on a few more channels
Another tip that might be more of a thing among men is to never just rip off a toenail. I was born with a spinal cord injury and I’m now 40 years old. When I was a kid I didn’t use a wheelchair or any other assistance, I just had diminished sensation below the waist, poor balance and didn’t have very strong legs. When I was about 8 or 9 yes old I was sitting and watching tv and saw that my toenails were a bit long so I started ripping them off at what I felt was a decent length. I accidentally went too far with one of my toenails and ripped the whole thing off. This was no big deal in my mind since I didn’t really feel much. Being a kid I didn’t really take care of the wound, after all it was just a toe and it looked fine apart from a little bit of bleeding. About a week later I got a really high fever and pain in my lymph nodes. I was rushed to the ER and it turned out I had contracted sepsis because of that toe. A few years ago a friend of mine died from sepsis because he hadn’t noticed a small sore on his leg until it was too late. Always be extra careful around areas of your body where you have diminished or no sensation and never rip your toenails off!
Never ceases to be fascinatingly informative.
Thanks for your video Brittney! As a Type 2 Diabetic, it is important for me as well, to practice good foot care so I got a lot from this video. My wife gets ingrown toenails quite often, so she too learned from this video. Your videos reach well beyond SCI, and we thank you for that!
I had no idea that pressure sores can occur in lots of places - I used to think it was only on one’s butt. And when I watched your video of you getting back in your chair from the floor, and you bought a shorter cushion, I wondered if that would cause problems for things like putting on pants, shoes and cutting toenails. Now we know!
Another good video Britt! For a bit of a different reason - I am a Type 2 Diabetic - and my wife has limited hand function, we now go regularly to get pedicures. Usually about every 3 weeks. Always the same place and they take good care of us. We’ve discovered that a pedicure is more than “pretty nails”; it is good foot health. And my wife no longer gets calluses. Spoil yourself Brittney - you deserve it!
too expensive lol
@@EmpoweredPara Just $35 each, and we know we are worth it, and I’m thinking you are worth it also!
@@EmpoweredPara Brittney, we think you are worth it! Just $35 per visit at a clean well-run shop near us.
Can You do a video Talking about your opinion of devotees please?
I am also a type 2 diabetic. My Diabetic doctor sent me to a podiatrist who takes care of my nails and feet. But I did learn a lot from your video.
I’ve learnt a lot from your videos about been Paralyzed xx
This may sound weird but you have lovely feet and interesting to see how you care for them. Happy new year,🎉

Thank you, not my favorite job but your way I go to try. 🙏🏻
Hi. Brilliant idea highlighting footcare, thank you. My damage is through MS not trauma but the effects amount to the same problems of circulation and sores, and not just feet(!).
Something else you raised in your video - spasms. How many able-bodied people out there realise that your limbs can take on a mind of their own if your spinal cord is damaged? It's quite fascinating watching my thigh muscles "rotate" when they spasm! :)
Wow, stumbled onto your channel. Just thougt you were in a chair. You look amazing. Keep workout and good healthy food. Pretty impressed. Nurse Norway ❤️🇧🇻
Thank you for these videos
I do mine with a glass nail file. They file down natural nails super fast and give a nice smooth finish that stops socks snagging (and also prevents me getting ingrown toenails). Having reach helps.
Also glass nail files (especially the bigger long wide ones) are fantastic for filing hard skin on your feet and big toes (try it, it’s amazing how smooth your feet feel after). It feels less abrasive and nasty than a sandpaper file (and doesn’t sound as gross lol). ☺️
Gonna get one and try that!! Brilliant!
@@EmpoweredPara my eyes are a little uncomforttable l have a hard time cutting my fingernails and toenails l vonder if you can make a video in slov motion vhile cutting both of them my sister can you please vrite an ansver
@@EmpoweredPara my sister please take a hand toe nail cutting video so l can see and do int please sistır
It is only the big toe you need to cut square, the other toes never ingrow so it's ok to cut them round
I had no idea! Thanks!
This is a really helpful video, thank you for sharing. As someone who has been paralysed since birth and has no feeling at all in my lower legs and feet I've always found it hard to cut my own toenails because I don't know if I'm hurting them or not.
Have you at least got some feeling in your feet that helps you to know if you're cutting into your toes instead of your toenails?
Thank you so much for this really useful guide!
Nope no feeling. It's really no different than cutting someone else's toenails. You can see what you're cutting into lol!
@@EmpoweredPara Thank you yes that's true, I've had a couple of times where I have cut into my toes by accident so I just wondered. I wouldn't trust myself with someone else's toenails haha.
Ive never had a pedicure until i broke my neck. Not gunna lie its now one of my fav outings these days😑😜😆
Thanks for sharing Brittney!
I've had many pressure sores on my feet and toes as well. They can take so long to heal especially since I also have bad circulation in my feet. I don't get traditional pedicures like for beauty but there are quite a few foot care nurses around my town who do medical foot care, taking care of corns and calluses as well as cutting of nails. I started doing this when I worked at a Medichair store and we had a foot care company within our store so I would just go to that nurse. Now I'm pretty fortunate to have someone come into my home to do it. Between that nurse and my PSW we all try to keep a very close eye on my toes and make sure they're dried very well after my shower. I also know someone who passed away at a young age from sepsis due to an undiagnosed pressure sore so I definitely keep an even closer eye on that stuff than I once did. That to me is scary!!!
I just saw some socks that help you prevent pressure sores between your toes:

It was very helpful, thank you.
Very helpful! Thank you 👏👏👏
Im the yahoo who used my wife email with out saying so at the start well I do have one now the first time I watch you and your husband Q&A I was very much impressed with your honesty and the depth of your answers
For your pedicure infection. What you want to do is find a higher end day spa type place not a mani/pedi place. It costs more but that means they have less clients so they have more time for you and are more careful and thorough and no infection! I also do this because they tend to be more allergen conscious and I'm allergic to steel
I could do that yep....I'm cheap though lol.
I am not a para-- but I also use fingernail clippers for my toenails. I was going to ask you about weight management as a para. I have always struggle diwth my weight, I I am sure it would all be very much harder fro me.
It's really important to file them after clipping because they will catch and be sharp and cut your other toes.
I never do that but it's a great idea!
I have spinal stenosis and I don’t feel below my waist . I also have lupus and now ms. My pediatrist told me long ago not to cut my own because I won’t know if I cut myself he is right, I attempted it before Christmas and I have two cuts on my toes . Not good anyway thanks for sharing xo
How is you cutting your nails any worse than someone else cutting them? They don't know if they cut you either, lol. Totally support you getting help with foot care, but not feeling isn't really a reason not to do it yourself, in my opinion.
@@EmpoweredPara well being leagaly blind doesn’t help but I also have very bad arthritis . I just didn’t feel like explaining that to the world.
@leannemayor5755 Well that changes things 😊 . I didn't mean to offend you. Just wanted to give you confidence if you wanted to do your own foot care.
@@EmpoweredPara that’s fine but please don’t make assumptions
@@EmpoweredPara Going to a professional pedicure in Italy is a must! , it's not expensive. I have been to them in the States too, because I am from California. You should treat your self to a pedicure, they know how to do it! ❤️
YOU are a BEAUTIFUL woman. I Mean it.
(Greetings from 'OZ'. Australia)
The times when your feet slip off the footplate, do they reach the floor? do you ever use straps or any techniques to keep them in place?
they do reach the floor so I have to be careful not to drag them. I don't use a strap on the front but I use one on the back of my legs
Wow 😮 😮😮😮❤❤❤❤ 9:29
Foot care is even very important for everyone especially diabetics some even loose feeling in their lower leg and feet extreme care needed so not to cuse problems
Have you watch youtube channel called The Toe Bro just curious very educational on foot care
NEW sub here ☺️😍 I just stumbled upon Ur channel, I actually need advice on cutting my nails due to Dystonia, general movement disorder..
I'll check the rest of the channel 😌😌🙂
Welcome!!
have you ever accidentally cut yourself with the nailclippers? even being able to feel, sometimes i accidentally wedge a piece of skin in the nailclippers.. but since i can feel the pressure, i dont cut myself. just wondering if its a problem or has happened?
yep lol, a few times
Yes… we all want to watch toe nail care…. Lazy NO… Financially smart… Yes…
Brittney will the spasms ever stop completely ?
Nope. But spasms are a good thing. They maintain circulation and muscle tone!
you have really nice eyes
thanks!
Do you have any sensation at all in your feet? Do you have to take care not to cut, bump your feet as well?
No I don't have sensation in my feet so I have to be careful. I hit my feet occasionally and have cut my nails too short a few times, but I'm pretty used to protecting them!
I had frostbite in my feet so now my right big toe grows 2 nails. One outward like normal, the other one grows under it upward perpendicular. I use the type of clipper that looks like wire cutter pliers.
That's interesting lol
Could a podiatrist cut away and acid treat one of the nails to permanently stop it? I imagine thats hell on your socks
@@Neppy22 funny but it also punches holes in the toes of my corks (spike sole logging boots)
but nope, I tried it didn't work so my next SUPER BRILLIANT idea was to pull both of them out with pliers
that didn't work either
My knees don't bend very well anymore - i can't bend them past 90 degrees, so I do mine often sitting on my bed with my legs out straight, and I bend over forwards. My mum has been bugging me for years to start seeing a foot care nurse.
Sounds like range if motion exercises might be in order:)
i had the nail on my big toes removed because i had difficulty cutting them.
interesting!
Wonder where those nosy construction workers are lol
sorry
Why not have hubby cut them - wouldn't that be easier?
😳😵 for free!?!?!?!?
I know right lol! Next time I'll charge for foot videos!
@@EmpoweredPara thankyou for understanding my sense of humor. 😊 im not trying to come off as creepy or nothing.
@ShadyMartin I know lol. Feel free to joke around with me!

I'm the nicest lady lol. Unless it's shark week, then run for cover haha.
@@EmpoweredPara I want you to know I think you’re a very inspiring person. I know you probably hear that a lot but I really find you to be a wonderful person from what I’ve seen in your videos over the past few hours.

I wish you and your family all the happiness and good fortune in the world.
