  • Well you guys asked for it and I aim to deliver: a whole video about how I poop. Creepos aside, I know there are many people that this video will be helpful for. Being able to see what someone else's bowel routine looked like would have been invaluable to me when I was first paralyzed. It would have given me an example to follow and the confidence to know that even though it was difficult at first it was going to get easier with time and practice.
What a paraplegic morning routine looks like is going to be different for every paraplegic but this is mine and I hope it's helpful!

I have a nephew that I’ve been caring for since birth who has a(n) SCI and I share videos like this with him to help him better understand. This is the most honest i've seen anyone with a spinal cord injury be about the tribulations of everyday life. lots of channels like to gloss over these parts of living with paralysis and act as if its this easy breezy influencer life. Which i find really misleading. Thanks for your honesty, i know it cant be easy, but its very informative and realistic.

Hey! This is super similar to the bowel routine that I did for years after my spinal cord injury (when I was 9 years old; I'm 36 now).
You may already know what I'm about to say, but it was revolutionary to me when someone told me about it, so I figured I'd share about it here in case it helps anyone.
At some point, I switched to using Fleet liquid glycerin suppositories. I just sit on the toilet, use the suppository, and I'm nearly always done after about 30 minutes. With the magic bullets, I had to dedicate nearly two hours to the routine. After using the liquid suppository for the first time, I never went back to the bullets, and I've hardly ever had to do any digital stimulation since them. Highly recommended.
Anyway, thanks for being vulnerable and making a video about this!

I've been sick since age 15...am now 32...so 17 long ongoing years of horrific, life altering, 20 super rare complex incurable and intractable chronic pain diseases and health problems that span over a dozen fields of medicine and subspecialty fields for over half my life and I've seen literally 600 doctors, specialists, and actual scientists and whom are pioneers in their fields and had experimental testing done at the most famous top ranked hospitals in the States/world, literally North x South x East x West, and have gone to world famous hospitals like Mayo Clinic 3x and 2x and University of Miami Bascom Palmer Eye Institute 2x as well as John Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute, University of Utah Moran Eye Institute, Northwestern University Hospital, the super brainy University of Chicago, Rush University Hospital all in the Chicago area as well as countless places in Northern Illinois and all over lower and Southeast Wisconsin, Froedtert Hospital (I practically live there and should move in), St. Luke's, University of Wisconsin....all to no avail. I have severe motility issues and an extremely slow transit colon. Since childhood, and part of this is heavily hereditary, I'd go poop once a week. Before I got sick at 15, I wasn't much better. Until my heart gave out, 1.5 hours of heavy weights and cardio 6 days a week, plus 60 min riding lessons 2x a week and 30 min hacking the other days on top of the gym with a total of 2-3 hours spent total at the stables, I was constantly hospitalized, ER room all the time, endless CT scans with and w/o contrast, xrays many many colonoscopies starting at age 15, etc...I now have gastroparesis. I went to Northeastern who was supposed to have a nationally renound motility specialist...he was useless. Consulted colorectal surgeons and they said with all my medical issues my chances were a meager 33%, even if this was my only issue it would only be 50% successful and cause 5+ other issues and aggravate my existing horrible health isues and recovery is over a year if even works and in my 20s and early 30s, I REFUSE to have a colostomy bag. Waa trying to get to a Neurogastroenterologist but they are so rare and specialized tgat only Stanford, Penn State, and maybe John Hopkins and Columbia University could maybe help and that's a huge maybe.
With my Gastroparesis and super slow transit motility, I literally don't eat breakfast, lunch, dinner or any snacks and yet it defies science and logic that I'm full of stool...somemlast week that were so large they were rock hard, dry literally tennis ball sized lumps of stool and there was like months worth in me despite eating a bowl of cereal 2-3x for dinner. I'm scared to eat and don't since 2019. I've fallen 3x and passed out from lack of nutrition at age 32.
I know all about saline and mineral oil enemas and every hospital grade enema, OTC and prescription colonoscopy preps, Miralax...which I took for a decade, milk of magnesia, mag citrate, all the heavy duty motility/constipation prescription drugs and injections and they either work for a couple days or weeks and then stop or don't work at all. I have boxes of gloves and lube as well as the enemasmand where I'm digging during majority of manual disimpactions of literally bone dry, rock hard pebbles or golf ball sized poops. I have special ingredient wipes and sprays and hemorrhoid creme and tonic. It's hell.
Exercise (nor water or my good diet) did NOTHING to help me go....see above what I all did and I just got worse and worse. It got to the point over the years that I REGULARLY wouldn't go for 10 days, then 14 days, then 3 weeks, then a month or more...and that was being in-patient overnight muktiple day hospitalizations and weekly ER visits on top of all these useless, idiot GI doc appointments.
I told my aunts on both sides of the family and my paternal grandmother that I'd rather go through cancer 3x than 17 omgoing years of my 24/7 unknown, untreatable hell that literally robbed me of my life: highschool, college, job, dating/relationship/marriage, more domestic and international travel, any exercise--gym, dance, weights, showjumping and dressage, or any sporty activity I used to do, hobbies and passions, photography...and they all thoroughly agreed.

I am paralyzed due to advance multiple sclerosis. Best way for me to have a bowel movement is using a bidet with an enema feature. No finger stimulation, as the stream of water stimulates the rectal area nerves to have a bowel movement. Also, no need for a suppository. You need to get a bidet. You're using too much time and your energy to go to the bathroom. I only have the use of one arm, so as long as you're able to transfer on the toilet, the bidet with the enema feature will stimulate your nerves to have a bowel movement. It's also much more hygienic, as it washes you clean. No need for wipes, gloves, pads, suppositories, again, I am completely paralyzed in both of my legs and my right arm. I developed a lesion in my C2 c3 area on my spine. The bidet has been a lifesaver and Time saver. All I have to do is get to the toilet and I can normally have a bowel movement in under 10 minutes.

A male perspective that might aid other males (and possibly some females). As a male wiping from the front is impossible (my anatomy gets in the way). I have found that by moving forward I can wipe my butt from the back. If I was to sit in that position while "going" poop would still fall into the toilet but urine would go on the floor.
All of the videos on the topic of using the toilet with mobility issues have been done by females so it is not an issue being discussed.
I have a broken leg and I can and have wiped while standing one leg. Doing so was probably the time I felt the least stable and most likely to have a fall. So learning to wipe while seated is a great improvement for me.

@@jewelhaines8842 That's me, though I'm not an addict and need prescription pain meds from pain doctors to literally live or I'd be dead. Now I'm on super heavy doses of Oxy for 2-4 years and Vicodin for 2 and Xanax for 18 years. Not every person who takes opioids is constipated and many go muktiple times a day or every day.
Until my heart gave out, 1.5 hours of heavy weights and cardio 6 days a week, plus 60 min riding lessons 2x a week and 30 min hacking the other days on top of the gym with a total of 2-3 hours spent total at the stables, I was constantly hospitalized, ER room all the time, endless CT scans with and w/o contrast, xrays many many colonoscopies starting at age 15, etc and 10-15 years prior to ever taking opioids...I now have gastroparesis. I went to Northwestern who was supposed to have a nationally renound motility specialist...he was useless. Waa trying to get to a Neurogastroenterologist but they are so rare and specialized tgat only Stanford, Penn State, and maybe John Hopkins and Columbia University could maybe help and that's a huge maybe; low they are such a specialized uncommon field that just to get an initial appointment is 3-4 months wait and they refuse to do a preliminary virtual consult to even see based on your health, records and GI imaging and tests done if you are even a potential candidate to be helped before flying out there and spending money on flights, hotels, rental cars...plus prescreening helps eliminate the mental and emotional anguish, frustration and devastation when you are inevitably told they can't help which is what you heard for 17 years for all your other 20 horrific incurable and intractable chronic pain diseases and health problems.
It's hell.
Exercise (nor water or my good diet) did NOTHING to help me go---and this was 10-15 years before I ever even took legal opioids....see above what I all did and I just got worse and worse.
