I have tons of milkweed and they are starting to grow. I also have PawPaw trees and snapdragon. Also the passiflora is growing too :) It’s gonna be a great butterfly year.

This year has been terrible for me, in 2018 I released 300 butterflies in June alone, this year I only released 19

I have a question... so I live in Northern Illinois and in that back of my house is a big creek with lots of milkweed plants everywhere, but at what part of the year do monarchs lay eggs, because I do not know. Thank you

Thank you for your question! Monarchs have several overlapping generations during the summer so you can look for eggs anytime! There are times when eggs are more numerous, but it is hard to predict when that will be. We recommend checking plants every 3-4 days. Often younger plants will have eggs up near the growing tip.

I'm in south FL so we can't bring milkweed leaves as they shrivel within hours. BUT, my problem is getting my eggs to caterpillars. I see wasps around and never a caterpillar but a 3-4th instar every 3 days, like a miracle, I bring it in the habitat cage with potted milkweed. I can't figure out why the wasps would eat the tiny cats at that small stage? Not a lot of research on this problem.

I noticed you are not cleaning your eggs with a weak bleach solution to kill OE on eggs. Is this not necessary? I live in Florida.
