The solution to the turret boss is to use up your crash bomb on the breakable walls and then suicide and refill your crash bombs and go to the boss and you'll see that the breakable walls don't respawn so now you'll have enough crash to destroy all the nodes. I had to call the Nintendo help line when I was a kid to solve this boss battle. Truly obnoxious
Wow. It's honestly already become a bit of a blur to me even though I played the game so recently. I think I just gave up and reloaded the level each time I couldn't figure it out (I played on switch). I thought the walls would respawn each time the level reloaded. This would've made it much easier.
That's really interesting that you called the help line. I never called it, but I do remember seeing the number on game boxes, and my Dad had a friend who worked for the Nintendo help line.
There is way to do it in 1 shot and actually had a shot of crash bomber left to cheese the level 5 wily boss. It's kind of difficult, but possible. You have to have full crash bomber of course, but you can do it. Even if you don't do it the speedrunner way you can still do it within one go if you are trying to go for a deathless run.
Things people don't like in Mega Man 2 101: Yoku Blocks and Wily 4 (I promise you, most people say that stage/fight is the absolute worst and is a reason why mm2 is NOT the best.) Ok I'm already like 1:23 in and I gotta disagree heavily. Outside of the purposes of zipping, Magnet Beam is wayyyyyy better than all of the items. You can have like a billion magnet beams on screen at once and you can hold the beam out and let it stretch out as far as imaginable before walking on it and doing the same thing. You aren't being forced upwards OR forwards by it, you can stand still. It's easier to evade enemies with it and everything. It is god tier. I'm skimming, but I don't think anyone else mention that Mega man 2 Normal is basically easy mode for Americans, the standard difficulty is Difficult in "rockman 2" as there is no "normal mode". basically just double or halved damage depending on how you want to look at it. That's a big deal, but if you're good you're right, it's not going to make much of a differnece if it takes 4 or 7 metal blades to kill Flash. MM2 overall is a big step up, but I often find myself pining for MM1 because it's less of a slog sometimes to do. Mega Man 2 is an absolute 10/10 you're crazy, even if it isn't the best game in the series, it's still in the top 8 games on the NES. Wily 4 isn't that bad, but it's a reason to like the rest of the series more.
I guess I didn't master magnet beam, but maybe if I go back to this game I'll try to use it more. Thanks for all the feedback, even the disagreements, I like reading other people's feelings on the games. I too feel myself drawn back to play mm1. I think there is something very pure about it.
You got some really insightful and entertaining reviews, keep it up! I hope you plan to expand your repertoire to other retro games as well, beside Mega Man. Would love to hear more of your thoughts. Oh man, the flood of early 2010 nostalgia is overwhelming when you talk about Screwattack and GameTrailers. It was a great time to be a gamer, both modern and retro. As a casual Mega Man enjoyer, I think this second entry has one new addition that makes it much more enjoyable compared to the first one: the password system. Despite that, I still haven't had the motivation to beat this game. But the GB Mega Man titles on the other hand... those are my jam.
Thanks! Yes, that was a very nostalgic time for gaming media. I'm happy you mention the GB Mega Man games. I had the first one growing up, and it was a really interesting game.
The Crash Bomb Wall for the Boo Beam Trap is a huge problem. I just played MEGA MAN 1-10 and virtually every other game can be beaten using the mega buster alone. The Alien requires Bubble Lead and I think it can’t be beaten with the mega buster. That means you may end up running out of ammo and being forced into a continue in order to proceed to win.
What's a capture card? You can use an Emulator like I do. As for my reviews on bosses. 1. Metal Man: Metal Man, by far, is the most interesting boss fight in this game and maybe even the NES Hexalogy. He has gone down as one of the best RMs in Mega Man history and for good reasons. For one he has 3 different attacks which should be the minimum numbers of attacks an RM should have. He is fought on a conveyor belt which adds a sense of urgent to the fight. His Metal Blades also has a melody to dodge it although it is awkward to dodge. He will jump and throw blades when you shoot and it adds to the fight. If you are trying to go near him and take a shot, think again because he will jump to the other side while throwing a blade at you. Weakness really exemplifies that. 7.0/10 2. Air Man: Air Man is another Robot Master with a reputation. A bad reputation. His attacks are good on paper. Air Gusts in a pattern that you have to dodge while being blown away. However the execution is abysmal as some of the patterns are next to impossible to dodge. He also seems to have the worst AI as almost all robot masters at least do something which is dependent upon the player's direction. He doesn't. To add insult to the injury, his weaker is absolutely terrible, almost feels like a cruel joke that isn't funny. Atleast his sprite is awesome. 1.5/10 3. Bubble Man: Bubble Man is one of the more underrated Robot Masters of the game. He was the first RM to have a water based fight. You'd think since the room is water, jumping would be safe but luckily there are spikes at the top although I wished they weren't instant death. His pattern on paper is pretty simple. However it flows well. Both the Bubble Lead and Bubble Shots are seemingly timed very well. His sprite is awkward though. And he can be locked into a pattern. His weakness makes sense and not. A Water based RM weak to a Metallic blade. 4.5/10 4. Quick Man: Contrary to Popular beliefs, Quick Man does have a pattern. It is Jump thrice, fire a boomerang at the peak of second or third jump and run towards you. However his fast AI messes with the game's clumsy hit detection so he sometimes jumps inside a wall, giving an illusion of randomness. It's still a terrible pattern and what's even more terrible is his weaknesses. The first one, Flash Stopper, doesn't kill him and the second one Crash Bomb doesn't fit this fight. However his sprite work is the best in this game, he is very beautiful animated. His fight is creative and very fun despite it's flaws. 4.5/10 5. Crash Man: Crash Man is another one of this game's underrated RM. He does nothing if you don't shoot so a small penalty there. If you shoot, he jumps at an angle and shoot. The Crash Bomb maybe too fast for my taste and their explosion lasts too long but I think I will let it slide because you always have to keep moving anyway. And since he jumps at an angle, it is easy to run under him ofcourse. Air Shooter kills him too fast but it is better than non working weaknesses. He unfortunate suffers from a lockable pattern but it is easy to screw up. His sprite is kind of lackluster and I don't like the explosion sound in general. 5.5/10 6. Flash Man: Flash Man's pattern is pretty simple. Run at a direction, jump when he gets shot, freeze Mega Man and shoot. It is already a very flawed pattern but luckily the uneven terrain makes it better but I admit the Ice physics are a bit too much. 4.0/10 7. Heat Man: Heat Man on paper has a very interesting design. However it ruined by yet again a lockable pattern. His awkward sprite doesn't help at all. Weakness would have been good if he wasn't as easy. 2.0/10 8. Wood Man: Besides Quick Man, Wood Man has the most flawed pattern in the game. He fires four leaves from the top which I think is one too much. He puts on his leaf shield which has a larger hitbox. My main problem with this fight is how pixel perfect it is. He jumps a millisecond after throwing away his shield and players have to make an awkward jump to avoid taking damage. Or you Just have to mash him until he dies before reaching you. And Weakness is one of the worst weapons ever made. You only and only get two shots at it and it is not good. However he is not terrible, it is still a fun fight. 4.5/10
I play on switch, so I needed a capture card to record gameplay to my computer. I got one after reviewing a few games. Woodman is a unique boss for me. I know it's totally personal, but I love his design, so I like fighting him even if the fight isn't that well made.
I love this game to bits, but the boobeam trap room (yes that's what's it called) ruins the end of the game imo, it was the first mega man game I beat so it really helped me get into the series
Great review! One thing I really like about Mega Man 2 is that there is no set rock-paper-scissors boss order. Multiple weapons work well against multiple bosses. For example, Flash Man is weak to both Bubble Man's and Metal Man's weapons. Future installments were more particular about the bosses to tackle first.
That's interesting. I used a guide, so I didn't experiment much with the weapons on the bosses, but it's cool that there is more than one way through the bosses.
This game has flaws but I cannot dislike it. I’ve played it so much and it’s fun every time. You could argue that 4 or 9 are better, but I love the weapons, music, and (most of) the level design. I can see how some people find this game to be overrated, because in the early 2000s game reviewers shoved it down our throats 24/7, but I don’t think that counts as a critique of the game. Great video!
I feel the same. I prefer 4 and 9, and this game def has its flaws (turret room), but it's still really good within the Mega Man series, and it's great if you compare it to gaming in general.
Great review! One other huge problem with the final stretch of this game IMHO is the final Wiley boss fight. His only vulnerability is Bubble Lead, and if you happen to die before beating him, there is NO WAY to farm weapon refills in the final stage (?!), so you have to just take a game over and try again (!?!?) 🤬 Also, I’m curious if you think that the Metal Man blade weapon is OP or not. Some reviewers say that it’s OP to the point of breaking the game… While I don’t know if I’d go that far, it seems to be “too good” to the point that once I have it, I’ll pretty much just use it instead of the regular mega buster 😂 Again great review! Can’t wait to watch the rest of your vids in this series!
I would give this game a 9/10. It probably only deserves a 7 or 8 but its nostalgia that makes me like it more than I should, as I played it when it first came out. I remember most the last stage where you just fall down a tunnel with and encounter these weird falling acid blobs, and there's an eerie silence with these splashing noises as they hit the ground. And like two hits from them will kill you. Its a bizarre and disturbing level. Also the soundtrack is amazing, probably the most iconic one of the series.
It's not the most challenging. It's lacking the slide and the power shot. The music is unrivaled. The atmosphere is excellent. Not the best but the most important.
Yeah, there are pros and cons to this game, but I love it. Since this review the game grown on me some more just because of it's influence, especially on Mega Man 9.
My review: Mega Man 2 is one of the most overrated video games. It is better than original but not by a lot. Weapon balance is off, some stages are boring. Wily stages give up after the first stage. However, it is not terrible. It is still a great game on it's own and a decent Mega Man title. 5.8/10
Hmm...I totally agree that's it's overrated, but it's soundtrack and art directions are so iconic! For me the turret room really holds this game back. I've reviewed all the mainline games, x1-3, and I'm almost done with x4, and the turret room is still the worst moment I've had playing a Mega Man game, the only thing even close is Sigma in x3.
