Capricious and cruel what Hasbro did to him. In happy recent news Jan made that really good Cult of the Lamb animation with Shady Vox, and I think he's working with the games creators now?

Unironically I'd say he gave personality to an otherwise generic, minor and somewhat forgettable background character that probably wouldn't have returned otherwise It genuinely sucks how Hasbro targeted Jan over his series on Button when they never went after other fans making similar projects about characters like Lyra and Bon Bon or even any of the main cast, which makes it all the more hypocritical.
@@clockwork3494 And what makes it all the more annoying? They attempted to write out _Applejack_ for being too "Southern" and Hardworking. Yeah. They claimed "Applejack is too generic" and that "her toys don't sell well"... Nevermind that they barely even _MAKE_ Applejack toys. Yeah, they are willing to put in _Suri Polimere,_ or _Starlight Glimmer_ into the roster rather than Applejack. I really don’t get what Hasbro was thinking. Loads of fan content creators make fan works of their show. Why was Jan animations targeted specifically? No one else, least that I know of got the same harsh treatment for their works. I’m not so much mad about the Button mash series being ended, but of the fact that one fan creator got this treatment directly from the company yet every other content creator who did the same thing Jan animations did never got that harsh treatment.
I know it’s honestly just upsetting how Hasbro targeted one specific fan. Just for making a fan series revolving around one specific background character from the show? That really is harsh.
@@unripetheberrby6283I agree, they messed with MisterDavie as well. If you don't know, he made Smile HD, Cupcakes HD, and a few others. Everyone literally spammed comments after awhile on the video after a year or two later of his videos release saying, "if Hasbro has this taken down, it's canon" and I had no idea why. Now I know.
The closest to the treatment that Jan Animations got was Fighting is Magic, the amazing MLP fighting game. Which is more understandable considering the type of game. That later because, with some help from Lauren Faust herself, Them's Fightin' Herds.

I remember there was a brony convention where someone asked a question to the director of My Little pony. When the director with ask why they shut down the button mash adventure fan series. The director did not even knew, that fan work even existed. The director said the lawyers did things on their behalf, and don't tell him anything about it. He said if he knew it existed he would have fought for it. I remember seeing a video on it on RUclips. Or it could be misremembered. I hope someone here gives the proper answer. Adding this to the edit, the director did say they were part of different departments. The lawyers do what Hasbro wanted to do. If I remember as well, the director said it's not his job to know what's the legal department does.
Yeah, I hear many big companies have legal departments that are...not leashed. Nintendo is another example. Many of Nintendo's devs are cool with fan stuff. Nintendo's legal department is NOT.
a prime example of JEALOUSY "those that are better than them instead gets silenced instead of partnering for either ego or profits" this and Nintendo are prime example of JEALOUSY
Forgive me my question (English is not my first language, it's Ponish), but… isn't saying "I envy you" supposed to mean something in the lines of "I admire you so much and I wish I could be like you", while being jealous is the petty one here, in the lines of "Why are you so much better than me?! Stahp it right now!" ? :q
Josh here: Jealousy is being like, "Ugh, that person's so lucky, I wish that I could have what that person has." Usually with a good or neutral intent (Example: If you heard that your friend met a famous celebrity that you adore) While envy is like, "Ugh, that person doesn't deserve any of that and I hate them for it." Like if you saw a person you didn't like become successful.
@@bonbonpony. Hungarian, and not get what they mean"better". They just taken empty skin and filled that with all their own ideas and are like"Hasbro take notes"?
I don't know if I'd say what Nintendo does is out of "jealousy", but more of just them being overprotective and controlling of their IPs, and what fans do with them. Kind of annoying, when many fan projects are so well done, and give more flavor than some of the original stuff.
Yeah That Smile on the Logo is nothing but a False the true meaning if Hasbro is not Happiness no no it's the opposite Greed Money Franchise Cheap stuff
They have Weird Standards for those they racist to Applejack for being "Southern" but they Literally have an Entire Episode about Racism Bridle Gossip and that makes this subject super duper confusing
You know.. I honestly don't get why Hasbro didn't take advantage to capitalize on this somehow. The Brony fandom's creativity is second only to Star Wars. Back in the day, George Lucas let people go crazy with fan films, series and such. It exposed SO MANY people to the fandom, even introduced people to Star Wars. But what made the Bronies creativity so unique was that so many of them were making REALLY good animations! Then you had Jan with what he did with Button Mash. If I was the head of Hasbro, I would have made a deal with him to go all out with minisodes that focused mainly on Button and his family and that there would be shared profits or something. Copyright, while important and necessary, is in a DESPARATE need of an update, along with execs line of thinking. This was never piracy, this was flattery.
Kinda makes me think how people in the music industry see getting a Weird Al parody of your song as a sign you made it, the greatest compliments can be someone loving something you made so much they wanted to make their own thing about it or something inspired by it. Shame Hasbro had (and maybe still has) such a hatred for people making fan content of their IP's during mlp's run, Jan's cease and desist felt so much more targeted but iirc some others did get smited with Hasbro's threats back in the day.
@@clockwork3494 ... Nothing will hurt more than Journey of the Spark, the fan film. That one is personal to me because not only was I a few characters in that, I was the voice director. The C&D didn't even come from Hasbro, just one of their "representatives" who never answered their phones or messages, just good ol' email. Problem was there was a huge risk and just... Oh man. Hasbro: *Sees endless NSFW content involving MLP.* "I sleep." Hasbro: "What's this? A creator making a bunch of fan animations of really high quality available for a (generally) PG-13 audience?!" *WOKE EYES INTENSIFY* I remember watching these animations when I was younger (and dumber.) It makes my heart hurt when instead of to do something with those endless *MLP NSFW content* Hasbro just ignores it but instead, put they fingers on a *FAMILY-FRIENDLY fan content* 😢😭
Hasbro allowed adult parodies of the show with the main characters full of blood and gore and sex jokes. But shut down such an amazing well animated voice acted show that could have easily passed as official content. I don't understand their logic, you can't explain it as anything but freaking idk jealousy? Infuriating and unjust
All of sudden, Hasbro forgot why this franchise was popular and attacked the hand that fed it. This was also around the time that they went after Fighting is Magic, and the fact that it got reborn as Them's Fightin' Herds isn't much consolation, considering that game is ALSO dead now.
0:17 gotta love the girls cheerfully hoping in to a FRIKIN FUNERAL just to remark the old man that is giving the eulogy (probably friend or family of the deceased) is old
I remember watching Button’s adventures back then. It’s sad how copyright laws and corporate greed are stopping people from making fan content. Wasn’t the fans’ love for the show important too? Had it not been for them G4 would have never been that successful. The way Hasbro reacted to fanmade animations for a character that they were never gonna use again was insane.
They should’ve hired him instead. Hasbro’s move really didn’t win them many points with the fandom. Maybe he’d get away with it today since the show has been over for 5 years. But this very thing is why some fan animators hesitated to bring their work to light and it SUCKS.
They could've pulled a Sonic Mania but instead they pulled a Nintendo. Update: I just remembered, DJTHED, a talented 3D MLP animator was hired to work on their MLP G5 video game at the time. He's a very talented animator and his 3D designs for G4 characters look much better than the SFM models.
Yeah, he could have gotten a team and run an entire spinoff series for them that fans would love, and yet they chose to bury the chicken laying golden eggs :q
@@troin3925 I know the guy, we’re buddies actually lmao! Yes that’s right he did get hired to do AMBA. G5 also got fandom artists such as Imalou to design characters and do concept art for them. I’m glad Hasbro came to their senses that instead of beating down the fandom they should give them an opportunity to join them instead. I also know a few fandom artists got on to the IDW comics for a few issues. Hopefully their days of punishing artists, animators and modelers etc are behind them and they’re warming up to just take them on instead.
It's sad how there were many cases of creators doing things as good or even a bit better than the original creators (not to one-up them but as a labor of love and fanwork) that get shut down and deleted instead of recruited or taken as feedback. It's very, very rare that the latter happens. I was going to say that maybe the lawsuit was fake, but with the exchanging of e-mails, it would sound official; and back then the fandom was HUGE. Hypocritical how we are encouraged to do fanworks but "oh no, not like that" for cases like this ~_~
This only shows that what Hasbro / DHX can create was nothing that extraordinary. Regular people can make such content as well, often with less resources and money than those big studious, and sometimes even in a more creative way. That's precisely the reason why they need "IP laws" in their current form: as their way of getting rid of any competition.
Man... Button Mash was the peak of my childhood in mlp, he inspired me to create my ponies oc based off of him and their adventure as well throughout my childhood. Button Mash, you'll forever be missed and remember to have formed my childhood...

EDIT: I think everything needed to be said has been said now, so please read replies before leaving your own, my notifications are nothing but this reply section now and it's all repetitive. Thank you for sharing your thoughts everybody!
They couldn't even use their own show for its full potential and ended it prematurely when it was on its peak. "One does not slaughter a chicken laying golden eggs" is the saying that Hasbro probably never heard of, and they have a long history of doing precisely the opposite to what it advises… \_(ツ)_/
Hasbro executives don't understand WHY G4 was appealing to such a wide audience and why it was successful even with the reputation that it was a girly baby show. Lauren Faust's insistence to make an actually good show that the writers could keep expanding on well after her departure was what made the generation what it was. Fan animators saw it and replicated it. Hasbro however didn't care to learn what made it good, so when the talented people behind G5 had ambitions to make the show just as good as G4, Hasbro would clip their wings and meddle. G5 was originally gonna be a 2D animated show with the concepts giving Gravity Falls vibes, but Hasbro canned it in favor of a CGI show that ended up feeling more like paw patrol than my little pony. They didn't even make new models for said show, they just threw the movie's models onto the animators laps and expected them to rush out an unfinished product. All this to basically say, Hasbro isn't made up of morons, it's made up of penny pinching accountants that don't care about art nor the quality of their products, animated or toys.
@@ArcticFFox Some things make me lean towards the morons hypothesis though. If they really were "penny pinching accountants", they would know how to act when people were literally throwing their money at them. They would make high-quality merch that doesn't look like some cheap bootlegs. They would make collectibles. They would employ whatever fan initiatives are there and license their stuff to them for their share in that business. They would utilize the pre-existing business models and fan content distribution channels. Meanwhile, they have difficulty selling their own toys because of how crappy they are, and they can't even spell the name of their company correctly (remember "Hasboro" in the old MLP Movie, and other spelling mistakes in end credits in G4?) :q
4:12 Wait Breaking Bad and MLP are your two favorite shows of all time too?!? I always loved how they’re somehow connected despite being polar opposites, like Horsenberg showing up, John De Lance being in both of them, etc.

I still wish we lived in the reality where they didn't C&D anyone and we got another 10 years of Jan animation works and the like. Hasbro put an end to so many fan works when they prevented people from using the frames we had that originally created every single one of our original animations in the fandom That day that that happened I still remember. As afterwards you had to now draw entirely new versions of the ponies and were not allowed to use the assets we had to create animations anymore, having to create your own riggings. it ended the fan works. As the fans were the only reason many of the ponies outside of the main cast even had a personality. Button mash only exists as he does now because of the fans, not because of the show. His character was created by us, as well as Lyra and every other background pony. When that day happened, it was truly a sad day for pony fans and is one of the reasons it seemed the fandom died overnight.

Technically he gave credit to Hasbro when making Button Mash adventures. So legally speaking he did nothing illegal against copy right laws. Plus Button Mash was a background character
Button Mash is written into my current fanfic comic, where he gets taken under the wing of the two main protagonists when they discover him in his mums bar being very lonely with no friends.
I still think they could have continued the stories using SFM but under a different name instead of Jan. The lawyers said they only could nab fans if they had their name and contact info. Seth MacFarlane always gets away with using Hasbro stuff without permission and nothing even happens.

Huh, I don't remember ever seeing Button Mash in the series before the 100th episode special. I always thought Button Mash was a fan made character created by the animator that got a cameo in that 100th episode. Guess I was wrong, and now I'm sad.
it's a common occurance, a company is afraid whether it be good or bad, when a fan or someone else is able to create something 1 to 1 in looks and feel of an IP, they fear what it will do to their personal profits, their IP, and their ownership of it.
This situation is also a great reminder that companies aren’t always your friend. Certain companies can and will strike you down if they want if their IP is touched too much.
Not defending Hasbro in the slightest, but something I feel is important to mention that the initial takedown wasn't long after the show assets were leaked, and people were using the official assets to make their own content. Jan made all his assets himself, but their show accuracy made it at least a little more understandable to fans. It was tragic what happened, and we all lost a beloved fan project, but I feel it's important not to leave out details like this that ARE important to the story, just because some think it might dilute what happened
Wasn't the leak related to another fan project, "Double Rainboom", which was first greenlighted by Hasbro, delegating some of the DHX animators to help with the technicalities, then shut it down as well shortly after it was released? :q

Whenever the fanworks look or sound too accurate to the source it usually gets striked down, so sad...
@@unripetheberrby6283I agree, they messed with MisterDavie as well. If you don't know, he made Smile HD, Cupcakes HD, and a few others. It's not too wild per say. Like remember that MLP fighting game that reworked to become "Them Fightin Herds"?
The closest to the treatment that Jan Animations got was Fighting is Magic, the amazing MLP fighting game. Which is more understandable considering the type of game. That later because, with some help from Lauren Faust herself, Them's Fightin' Herds.

Welp, looks like we're gonna get a part 2 now.
Reminds me of one voice actor recently discovered that Crunchyroll was confiscating all mail sent by his fans for quite a long time :q
this makes so much sense. the lawyers probably kept it to themselves so they can cash in on the cease and desist.
That sounds illegal.
Yeah, I hear many big companies have legal departments that are...not leashed. Nintendo is another example. Many of Nintendo's devs are cool with fan stuff. Nintendo's legal department is NOT.

a prime example of JEALOUSY
"those that are better than them instead gets silenced instead of partnering for either ego or profits"
this and Nintendo are prime example of JEALOUSY
More than jealousy,it's ENVY

Thankfully Button Mash lives on in various fanworks, but it's still a sad case of what could have been.
It's about protecting their IP.
The art suffers for them being stingy.
ROCKY?!?! YO I DIDN’T EXPECT TO SEE YOU HERE!

I also know a few fandom artists got on to the IDW comics for a few issues. Hopefully their days of punishing artists, animators and modelers etc are behind them and they’re warming up to just take them on instead.

@@PhoenixRedtail I know him too lol, you on his discord?
I’ve always wondered what happened to the series.

@bonbonpony the show literally been making episodes for 10 years. I don't think it ended prematurely. It's been long enough.

I still wish we lived in the reality where they didn't C&D anyone and we got another 10 years of Jan animation works and the like. Hasbro put an end to so many fan works when they prevented people from using the frames we had that originally created every single one of our original animations in the fandom
That day that that happened I still remember.

6:35 HASBRO?!
To any kids who weren't around during that time, Nintendo isn't the only company guilty of taking down fan projects.
@@bonbonpony Yeah, Jan wasn't the one using the stollen assets, but Hasbro was cracking down on ALL show accurate fan animations
I remember back in my growing days, i used to add Button Mash as my entire entire personality. It was the time fr
Oh my goodness, this is one of those cases that sort of keeps you up at night. Not in a sense that it's terrifying thoughts, but a genuine ponder if Hasbro didn't do what they did to Jan a decade ago. I really do believe Jan should've been up there with the other fan animators of the time like Viva Reverie. An actual unmatched talent for coming close to 1:1 with the show's animation whilst having a sense of humour that felt like asdf-esque at times?
I always wondered what happened to that guy 🤔
He tried to negotiate with Hasbro's lawyers while they've been fooling him for a couple of years and eventually duped him anyway. He grieved for a couple of years, being unable to do what he loves, but eventually gave up and moved on to different things, making his own animated projects.
