As a Native New Yorker, I gotta say, you’ll get a lot more for your money and space if you leave downtown Manhattan. The Upper East Side will surprise you with affordability and size in comparison to downtown. The Upper West Side is also more affordable in comparison but also a bit pricier than the UES. And it goes without saying that you’ll get more bang for your buck if you venture outside of Manhattan. I think there are many neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn you would like. LIC, Astoria, and Sunnyside (in Queens) come to mind. And in BK-Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Park Slope, Boerum Hill, Downtown Brooklyn, etc. You get the neighborhood feel and city amenities without the Manhattan prices and small spaces. Also they’re a pretty close to Manhattan via train & ferry too. So you get the best of it all. It makes NYC a much more realistic option to move to when you explore more “affordable” neighborhoods, in comparison to SoHo anyway lol. 😅

@Rachel Forshee - I disagree with your assessment . She can choose to live wherever she wants, and as a born and bred New Yorker I can give her advice should she choose to live here. I don’t know her financial portfolio, but she can also purchase a place instead of renting, just not in the neighborhoods she’s looking in.

Always enjoy seeing Manhattan apartments and the crazy prices and layouts. The beauty of NYC is that you can live in a nearby borough and get a bigger and cheaper apt. and still have easy access to Manhattan. This way you can have the bustle of Manhattan and then go home to a suburb. My daughter's friend who has 2 kids just rented a 3 bedroom, 2 bath very large apt. in Forest Hills Queens for $3700. Unfortunately they can't afford to buy a house in their price range right now, so they'll try to save more towards a down payment. I hate the way landlords cut up apts. and have fireplaces in the corner of a room or some other awkward place.

    • @chrissymoss514
      @chrissymoss514 Год назад +8

@queens6583 , it's exactly the same here in the UK. When I was younger it was so cheap to rent a one bedroomed apartment, whereas mortgages were expensive. My initial comment was very much "tongue in cheek" - British sarcasm, sorry.
The greed of the landlords for private accommodation is sickening (in the UK), they will continue to raise the cost of renting unless my government makes some much needed changes to certain laws.
Thankfully, I own my home but my son experienced the "private landlord greed" first hand. It creates a catch 22 situation, in that people cannot save for a mortgage deposit AND rent privately. Which was why my son had to return home - just to be able to save up the deposit needed. I totally understand that not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to return home or, indeed, earn enough to allow them to put money aside.
It's very difficult for todays young people.

I visited NYC for the first time in 2021. On a whim. I always wanted to live there when I was young. I flew into Philadelphia and rented a car. I drove up to Manhattan, clueless where to go. I drove around a bit, and left. I was pretty pleased with myself for daring to drive there. Since then I’ve driven all over Manhattan twice now. I’ll probably never live there, but I’m proud of myself for visiting and seeing the city. If you can give yourself even a 3 day weekend, do it. As a novice, I’d recommend flying into JFK and renting an Uber to drop you off somewhere in the city. Get a hotel for a couple days and just wander around and walk. Let the Uber take you back to the airport when you’re done. You’ll be glad you did.

I personally would never live in NYC because the high rent prices isn’t worth it for me. I love having space(my current 1 bedroom is 714 square feet and that feels perfect for myself) and also a must have for me is a dishwasher, closet/storage space, and laundry either in unit or only shared by a few other units in the hallway. I know nyc is so expensive because of the location but it’s still like wow. That $8,400 apartment is almost 9 months of rent at my current apartment. I live in a good area and pay a little under $1000 a month. I also have gas, water, parking etc included in the rent so my only additional apartment related expenses are electricity, internet and renters insurance.

If ur not afraid 2 live outside of the few neighborhoods shown n videos like these, u can find a larger apt 4 a lot less. If u r afraid & must live n specific neighborhoods, u'll b paying 2 live n a closet. These apts r trash.

I enjoyed seeing these that had character and unique qualities. In The luxury high rise apt tour videos they all look the same. That being said aside from the two newly remodeled ones they look so grimy! I’d have to clean and scrub for days just to think about living there. Especially for those prices.

That's what I thought they all look super dirty and gross besides 2 of them.

I love these videos! It's crazy how some celebrities live in homes that are 10,000+ sq ft and some bedrooms in NY are the size of a closet.

How you explain New York almost feels similar to europe to me. Coming from alaska I can’t believe people would pay over $8000 for rent!

Soooo expensive but obviously love the same one you did by far the best one. I mean with a roommate, it's better than the others. I would personally never live in New York, but for someone who would want to be in a big city, it's great.

#4 was definitely the best one! It was like the type of place we all wished we can live in at some point in our twenties. Just for a while though eventually I’d want something bigger 😅 #2 was also nice!

    # 4 was amazing if you are willing to pay that price. My daughter and her husband are on the lower East Side in a 5th floor walkup. They have been there 8 yrs or so, and like the convenience of their neighborhood.

I’d just stay in California or Washington with those prices!! Can you imagine the space you can get with over $8,000 on the west coast? Definitely more bang for your buck!

I'm city girl, I live in the heart of Chicago, but NYC is wild to me. Every space is so awkward and claustrophobic even the larger units unless you get towards those million dollar price ranges and I could never do a walk-up for the life of me. God forbid you twist an ankle or something and need to get home. I've never had the desire to live there but always fascinated by these apt hunting videos. I'll stick to my condo (that I own) with elevator, doorman and garage parking.
